If I were to go for a guy shorter than me, we'd be reaching midget level. It would also be the most inconvenient thing because, as it stands, I still have to get my roommate to get some things off the top shelf in the kitchen for me (and she's only a few inches taller). Hell, sometimes I even have to stand on the counter when she's out. So a shorter guy would not only be impractical, but also hard to find.

I'd say height is definately a factor. A tall girl going out with a short guy (like you all discussed) is a little messed up. A shorter guy can protect you just as well as a tall guy can, I'm fairly tall but short guys can be pretty tough.

Although height in a relationship is purely preference, in terms of protection short guys can be just as good if not better than taller guys. Although I know what you mean by instinct and feeling but I think that relates more to the physical appearance and attraction of the guy rather than the ability to protect.

If a girl is able to bury her head in a guy's chest and he "towers" above her and is holding her with his arms pressed to his chest a girl would feel more secure being embraced not only just around by a guys arms but that he is above her, while if a short guy hugs a girl if she's taller than him she would feel more exposed.
