agreed! THis looks like one of the movies of the Year to watch.

It's a remake of the old movie: The 300 Spartans.
From that title at least u can tell what it's about. basically 300 Spartan's holding against an impossible force (one million). Like TROY meets LOTR meets other olden war type movies, such as Kingdom of heaven, Alexander etc.
Looks far better than all.

Yeah I haven't read the graphics novel but this is shaping up to be something special, I really like the artistic approach. That and its also nice and gritty, unliked romanticised/pretty Hollywood films like Troy. Can't wait!

How ever there were not only 300 spartans at thermoplye they had around 5 and a half thousand defenders at the pass. So as amazing as it sounds that 300 fought a million its just not true, even as poetic as it sounds.

Well, this is more directly based off the GN by Miller (from what I hear, artistically moreso than anything else).

If that's the case, I can't wait to see the blood shed. Miller knows how to take something as visceral as blood and turn it into a medium of art. Bless him.

The movie is based off a graphic novel that is based off the real event. Pretty much the graphic novel takes the real event and makes it more exaggerated and comic book form. Much like in those times if a real event was retold through a story teller. So you have two layers of entertainment in there. And in the real event, the numbers were different but they're using the numbers from the graphic novel.

Gah, its not out until March 23rd here in the UK. Though interestingly, I read today Frank Miller (the graphic novels author) is thinking of creating a follow up to 300, with the Spartans as the enemy. That'd probably be a year or more away in graphic novel form though, so I guess no holding your breath for a movie sequel. Still, good to hear people like it, can't wait! :)

What an amazing movie. Man the fight scenes, the battle formations, the legendary lines that will be my new quotes to use, the gore, the blood, OHH man. The visuals were just absolutely breathtaking that I can't describe it.

This movie gives us a hint of spartan life and how much honor they had, and the fact that they were the best fighters of their time. The ending was just sad.. I almost cried watching it.

The fight scenes were really awesome, especially the last fight scene and the fight between the king and the ogre-like guy. It had some great-ass quotes. :p I also like the symbolic and metaphorical moments in battle, and the realism. It had great acting too. Since the Persians are the "evil" ones in the movie, they are portrayed as monsters and freaks, to make them fit the role more. Totally untrue historically, but whatever.

The ending was sad when all 300 died, but it made up for it when the Spartan w/ the bandage over his left eye brought an army of 10,000 Spartans and they did that war chant and it reminded me of the war chant that the Uruk-hai did in the Lord of the Rings. This has to be the perfect guy movie I mean fighting and peoples legs flying in the air and not to mention nude women. The women were pretty flat, but they sure did have some pretty hard nipples =P and I'm probably gonna go out and buy some 300 action figures since I saw some on the internet and King Leonidas and the Immortal action figure looks awesome. Gonna collect them and see how much money I can get off of it in the future =X

Troy was alright, but I still can't get over the idea of somone like Paris killing Achilles. What a bad way for a killing machine to die by a wimp like Paris. Getting killed by an arrow is even worse. Besides that imagine Achilles being w/ the Spartans at the battle of Thermopylae.

Just finished watching a cam rip.
It was an awsome movie, great fight scenes. I woulda like it a little more if they at the end of a battle were pretty much covered in blood but they really weren't.
And what the king said the the deformed dude "I hope you live forever."
I was like oh snap, cause it was pretty much the most hurtful thing you could have said.
And yes the chicks were lacking in the boob departement, but in sparta it was probably considered more sexy if they had small boobs because it would be more manly. Historically speaking it hasn't always been big boobs, in cycles through. Though I'll stick with nice big firm ones myself :p
About 2/5 through the movie i got my second weight and started pumping but you know they all have like 12 packs **sigh**

Definitely a male film though, and loads of pointless scenes in it. don't get me wrong, the visual was neat, but thats about it.

even if you love violence and gore, you won't be fascinated by it
forever. every sandal movie from the 50s has a better plot. Another
thing straight to the point, the depiction of the ancient persian empire
and their warriors. spartans run around half naked showing off their
masculinity and their generousity while their opponents seem to be
a barbaric, demonic, bloodthirsty, underdevelopped horde of misshapen
creatures.

now i know that it is entirely fictional, but come on... this could have been
done in another way.

all in all another quite stupid hollywood-like GOOD vs. BAD film, we
have seen soooo many times that i'm already tired of it. the enemy is

I think it's a 1 hour and around 40 minute movie? It's a good movie and it's a perfect guy movie to be honest. Some of my girl friends liked the movie because the Spartans kicked ass and they drooled over the perfect built body of the Spartans =X. it is said that you need 3 fighters to put down a greek hoplite in closed combat,
as in using spear and melee type weapons. (due to their tactical superiority)
however according to history they got so easily killed because they got betrayed by
one of their own revealing a hidden mountain path to the persians. so with
being attacked from behind and above, there is no way to stand against both infantry
and archers, especially with those numbers.

Me too. Didn't find as much gore as everyone's been talking about.

I've been wondering that too. After all those battles...they defeated almost everyone there was but that last battle seemed the final and if they held on, they could've won.

I don't get how they were so easily killed in the end. I'm guessing they were exhausted from all those previous battles or lost their will to fight further.

and his men, so the enemy could attack from behind/above.

having archers in your back while standing against a big ass army of swordman is
kinda messy situation. there is no way you can block so many attacks. you will
eventually give in. raw masses in battle can do alot even if they have f.e. bad
equipment or a disadvantage in where they stand. look at the allied landing in the
normandie for example. it was the perfect spot to defend, tanks were useless in
wet sand and couldn't get thru because of the blocks, it was an open field, not much
of cover and only infantrie to care about. yet it couldn't be held.... mass does matter.

i like the language they used, some of it is very poetic, like "so many arrows they will block out the sun and fight in darkness" (or something like that)

But you know the narrating guy, how did he lose his eye? (i think I missed it, was it with that big axe guy?)

Oh and I absolute LOVE the costume designs for the Persian, like thos magic-users. (Although Xerxes looked cool with the piercings yet gay (especially the eyes) at the same time) Although Spartans should wear more lol, i don't think being almost naked is good for melee combat (though a friend of mine commented on how the red capes distracted her too much from picturing the buffy Spartans naked, she failed to picture it because they were too flowing and red lol (red catches atention a lot more than any other colour))

well this is actually quite close to reality. i think they had to look for their gear
themselves. (there even exists an ancient drawing of king leonidas where he
has only the red coat and nothing else.... i think it's even on wikipedia.org)

anyway the strange part, i don't understand is, ... all of the persians have those
robes and expensive clothes and armors and god knows what and yet xerxes,
their king is almost nekkid.... i mean come on, he's the big cheese... he should
have clothes woven of pure gold. i somehow doubt he run around like that, even

Ok, this is how it is.

The battle that was in 300 was called the Battle of Thermopylae. In real life it was really 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, and about 5,000 Greeks vs 250,000 - 1 million Persians. The Persian Immortals did not look like that besides having a turban covering their face and not a mask. They were heavily armed with 2 swords. As for the Spartans, they wore armor and had the best in the world. The Spartan tactics in the movie also called the phalanx is real. And King Xerxes did not look like a 7 foot homosexual. He was around 5'5 and have a long beard. At the end, all 299 Spartans died except one since he was the one that ran back to Sparta to tell King Leonidas's story. Near the end of the movie, where the narrator commands an army of 10,000 Spartans and 30,000 free Greeks, that was the last battle called the Battle of Plantea.

Strangely, I expected more fighting and... machoism? And I didn't really like the scenes back in Sparta, they somehow didn't fit the mood (a woman in an active role, in a film like this? Wha?). Usually I'm all for the Plot, but if the movie should be all about how Spartans are so totally awesome, it's a special case.

Liked it anyhow. Beautiful imagery. And no wonder those people were so aggressive, wearing pants like that all day long.

I'm thinking I should read the comic, but I haven't seen it in stores around here. Haven't checked after the movie was released, though.

True but it was still light armor they didn't wear anything as heavy as you see in later empires. Funny I just watched it cause I downloaded it in HD on my laptop (don't ask how:sad) but it was definitely really nice. It did over exaggerate the Persian slaves a little (I especially liked the Chinese and their fireworks/bomb scene AWESOME)

Yeah, it's Rome Total War. Since the game is so good and realistic (moral, soldiers getting scared, etc) it was use to demonstrate real life ancient battles for some history videos. 300 is amazing. It really is. Truth be told, I didn't much care for the subplot because it meant a lull in fighting. However, the story sticks so close to that of the graphic novel... There is only one shed of criticism I have for the movie and for that we go to BOLD!

This movie was pretty awsome when it came to the fight scenes, action, and romance *wink*. The parts where they slowed down the action and you watched all the violence and cutting was pretty awsome though to say the least. I never really saw anything like that in a movie.
The overall story was okay, they weren't very diverse in their plot, it was pretty simple and straight forward. I thought it was kinda silly to have those mutant people in the battle, with the giant ogar, and the king of the Persians voice was "different" indeed.
I liked the King of Sparta's part and it was kinda depressing in the end. (I won't say any spoilers)

Overall it was a good movie and I enjoyed this action packed film.
