i am hoping to upgrade the processor on my P.C. soon and what to know if theres anyhting i need to be careful of.
my P.C. is a H.P. a1005. uk
currently it has an AMD 3000 1.81ghz processor.
the motherboard is a Salmon (K8S-LA)
it's pretty rubbish AND it says that the maximun recomended processor is an
Athlon64 3700+.
i don't know what power supply it has but the one that came with it
i'm wanting to know if i got the 3700 would that be ok or would my motherboard blow up/P.C. stop working
also would that upgrade be worth it or is there a better one for around the same amount (£70).
any advice welcome but please no spam as i'm pretty gulible when it comes to P.C.'s:D

Hmmm... I'd say get the AMD Athlon 64 3700+.
Your next two upgrades should be (if you upgrade again):
Max out your system ram (you should have about 2GB by the time you're one)
Get a cheap 128MB graphics card. (If you don't have a great graphics card, a cheap graphics card will give amazing results)

the only thing you are gunna have to be careful of, is that if you decide to do a major cpu upgrade, be prepared to upgrade the motherboard, ram, and cpu all at the same time.

Well, not really. As long as you don't get a processor faster than your motherboard can handle. Although, if you did upgrade your mobo you might consider upgrading to faster ram, since it's always getting faster.

make 100% sure your board can support the 3700 email the manufacturer.
like was suggested RAM is the easiest cheapest speed up for a comp. if your not maxed out you might want to try adding RAM first it can speed you up by a good portion.

Yeah if you want to upgrade your cpu you're gonna have to look for a motherboard upgrade, and if your case isn't an ATX case, a new case aswell.

thanks a lot everyone. in terms of RAM i'm pretty happy and the reason i want a new processor is so that i wont need to get a new motherboard as that would mean a new graphics card etc and i can't afford all that right now.

You wouldn't have to get a new graphics card if you buy a motherboard with the same slot as you have now, IE PCI, AGP, PCI-Express.

true but mine is currently an AGP and it is getting hard to find resonably price cards for AGP so if i got a new motherboard i would get it with PCI express, but i know what you mean.
as for emailing. i'll do that before i buy it's just searching through all the crap before i get the right email address. but it's ok as i'm not in a rush
