I prefer rock, but I also listen to a lot of hip-hop like Wu Tang, Redman, Pharoahe Monch, MF Doom, Scarface, UGK, Rakim, Public Enemy, Big L, Rass Kass, and Nas. The problem I have with rap currently is there's so many mediocre emcees who get famous off their fake image and affiliations rather than their actual talent(50 Cent, Game, Mike Jones, Paul Wall, etc). Take 50 specifically for example. He got shot 9 times, so he already has an image. No need for his label to make one up. He signed to Eminem's label, so he has affiliation. Give him some Dre beats and you've got an instant superstar. This is the formula for most of the upcoming rappers and few of the talented ones are actually major recognition based off the mixtape scene like Papoose and Saigon.

I'll take rock every day. I think actually playing instruments and writing songs takes more talent than having your beats handed to you on a silver platter and having most of your shit ghost written. Of course there are exceptions in rap like RZA and DJ Quik who write and produce all their music but for the most part I think currently the rock scene sounds much more fresh. Although there are some really shitty rock bands in the mainstream like My Chemical Romance right now, there's a lot of good shit as well and there's always the underground too which is also better than the underground rap scene at this moment, IMO.

Heavens Defender

Not all rap has to do with slapping b**ches and killing, there are rappers that rap about way more serious things, and it takes a ton of musical talent to rap.

_strangechild_
11-02-2005, 07:09 PM
I like umm, about one or two rap songs. I don't mind rap ^^ I don't hate it, some of it is good (I don't like really fast ones when you just don't have a clue what they're on about. Then again, I don't like when I don't have a clue what people are saying in any song. That's why quite a lot of rock songs I just.. don't like, it frustrates me not knowing what they're saying) I just don't listen to it. I don't like some rock, but I guess I listen to it more.

Cerpin Taxt
11-02-2005, 07:13 PM
I hate rap, it's people talking fast, there's no actual musical talent, the music's done with computers.

I have to disagree there. For one, using a sampler machine is just as difficult as playing an instrument(I consider using a sampler playing an instrument anyway) and it takes a vast amount of musical knowledge and having thousands of albums on vinyl to be really good at it.

Second, there are hip hop musicians out there like DJ Quik, The Roots, etc, who can play any instrument used in a traditional rock band. Third, there are musicians who both rap AND produce (DJ Quik, The RZA) which takes more musical talent than just playing one instrument. Fourth, there's hundred of rappers who are actual poets and dont just rap about money, hoes, clothes, drugs, and guns.

If you hate rap, that's cool, I dont listen to it much anymore myself, but to say it takes no talent and it's not real music is a bit of a stretch. Sure theres lots of shitty rappers in the mainstream but theres just as many shitty rock bands with no songwriting ability and no instrument ability other than playing the same chugga chugga riffs that everyone else has already done before.

Firstly, the type of music is HIP HOP, rap is what you do, so the title should be Hip Hop vs. Rock.

And also, alot of people forget the main thing that sets these two genres apart, with in the style of Rock, there are tons of mini styles, Soft Rock, Hard Rock, Punk Rock, Pop Rock.

But inside of Hip Hop, there is nothing else. Rock is more of a seperated genre due to the different types, but everyone in the rap game can relate to everyone else because they are making the exact same type of music the exact same way.

I believe you just won the award for most ignorant statement on music EVER. There are sub genres in hip hop just like there is in rock. Every city has their own unique sound. If you consider soft rock, hard rock, punk rock, and pop rock to be "mini styles" then hip hop has it's own equalivents. Boom Bap, Grimey, Crunk Rap, Bay Area Rap, G-Funk Rap, Mafioso Rap, Conscious Rap, Trip-Hop, Hardcore, Horrorcore, Dirty South, Backpacker Rap, Midwest, Drum & Bass, Gangsta Rap, Party Rap, etc etc etc are all completely different that doesnt follow the same formulas. To say that these sub genres are all the same is like me saying rock is all the same cuz it all involves a guitar and drums. If you're gonna correct people on what they call this music you should at least possess a grain of knowledge about it!!!

-_-;

K, um, you can like rock and not wear all black and cut yourself. I swear, where do kids learn these things? Music noobs!

Anyways...

All music is the same when it comes down to it. You can write a song, and sing it aloud, and then add some nifty background beat to it, and it'll be called music. But the rythm and beat of ones song, can determine which genre it gets dropped in.

I prefer rock over rap though. Rap these days, deals with too much *****es & Hoes. But, then you got the other rappers, who sing of personal reflections and life changing expericences, etc, just like a rocker would mostly do. Rappers can make songs that most of us can relate to, as with Rockers.

When it comes down to it, I don't mind Rap. But most of them sing about the samethings, including '*****es & Hoes' or 'Cash Money'. You know, materail things, and girls/guys who sell themselves. Or sexing up a female/male.

*shakes head*

wow... i was just readin the last few posts, and my only thought was just "wow". like DMC said, can we stop w/ the "rap is crap" bs? i kno a lot of u like rock (i like a lil rock myself too), and i respect ur opinions. but, i hate how u guyz just put "rap is crap" and thats it. its annoying. at least put a reason why u hate it. if i was a rocker, i kno i would hate it if i saw 10 repetitive posts sayin "rock is cock" without a reason. rap is misunderstood too easily today. dont listen to those rap artists, for example: 50 cent. rappers like him set a bad image for rap/hip-hop. there are rappers out there who speak about the truth, like kanye west, 2pac, nas, and eminem. u should actually try to listen to some of their songs. im not denyin the fact that most rap songs talk about: b!tches, hoes, hustling, money, guns etc., but dont say that ALL rap songs talk about those kind of subjects. i bet most of u rockers listen to like one or two rap songs containing those subjects i named and assume that all of rap is like that. its kinda like stereotypin. im jus sayin what i think.

my problem with rock is that there are hardly any bands that you can just listen to without skipping some songs on the album, with rap however, that isn't the case I can listen to "ghetto fabulous" first track to end non-stop, and same thing with "life & times of S.carter Vol3"

Rock isn't bad there are some songs that really get me going, but it's really hard to find songs like them. but with rap a good song isn't so hard to find.

-more musical oriented
-suspect to questionable lyrics sometimes
-better live
Rap: -more influencial on kids nowadays
-better songwriting/lyrics
-more meaning/messages
-can be repetitive
-"Gangsta" Syndrom(Ho's, mother fers, drugs ect)
I prefer rock myself though

Ok. I'd prefer hip hop/rap than rock any day. Not saying that I don't listen to rock, because there are some songs I just can't get out of my head, but I like songs that you can dance to...and hip hop has that ability. (: Yes, some rap songs don't have the best lyrics, but the same can be said about rock. On the other hand, the music itself and the beat is the first things that catches my attention. So in the end, it doesn't matter what I'm listening to...just so long as I like how the song sounds. That's my personal opinion. So basically, I like 'em both, but the scale is tipped a bit more to hip hop because I love dancing. :D

I like how you stated your opinion without resorting to the usual "Rap sucks" or "Rock sucks" attitude. Yes, both genres have their share of good and bad music. In defense to rock, though, there's some songs out there that you can get down to.

Have you noticed, not a single rap fan has said "zomg rock is gay!" (there might have been one) while nearly every rock fan has said "rap is crap", minus like 5? Just a thought.

Seriously, metal sucks. Let me rephrase that. It's boring and it's very uncreative, and needlessly fills its lyrics with gangsta "I'm so hard!" It's just an ego check for testosterone filled losers who don't have girlfriends. Same tends hardcore/screamcore, except when it's used hybrid with other music, like the current Bleach opener (at the end, with the screams), or the song has sung lyrics too. Gangsta is just as bad, especially the current stuff.

The best stuff to me is soft rock (Pixies, Verve), pop (Beatles, KT Turnstall), punk (Clash, 'Pistols), Hip Hop (the more undergroundlike stuff, J5, Scapegoat Wax) and the indy-punk-pop stuff (Libertines, Arctic Monkeys).

So I'd have to say rock, but then again, the skill it takes to rap blows me away with the skill it takes to rap, I can't do it, and this is a multi-talented musician with an eye for poetry talking.

animalistic
12-24-2005, 09:50 PM
if thats true then you must have listened to some messed up metal songs, cuz wut i listen to is far from that, i love metal/rock, why? because they have the best music, and ya some metal/rock songs have messed up singing but the music is awesome, and i agree that some metal songs suck because some pissed off dude got his hands on a guitar, but i dont listen to that crap, i pretty much hate rap/hip-hop except for some tupac songs and eminem(because they are funny)

Makaze
12-24-2005, 10:20 PM
Oh, sure, when its ME saying "none suck, i just prefer the other", nothing, but when He says it, it's "awesome post, man"......(jk)
I've already posted saying what i prefer, but for the record: I hate most metal, the exeption being system of a down and metallica. And im not a big fan of punk either. Guitar/bass/vocal driven songs, with ephasis on melody are my thing, i.e chilli peppers, radiohead, strokes, muse, coldplay are my prefered option. Lyricly, tey can be not to great, with heart fely lyrics like "yeah" and, if feeling particulary emotional, "oooh yeah". But they just make me feel...something. Dayam, this is hard to articulate. oh well, whatever. Rap can be ok, with fantastic impro, lyrics and rythm. But it jsut gets repetitive and generic for me.

Baron

Rap can be ok, with fantastic improv, lyrics and rythm.

Fantastic... good choice of an adjective. I like that.

But it jsut gets repetitive and generic...

On some occasions, I agree with that statement. There's a lot of hip-hop that just sound too similar. Fortunately, there's a lot of hip-hop that's really good, and the good hip-hop definitely overshadows the repetitive stuff.

Good music transcends through barriers and genres. ;)

Makaze

Good music transcends through barriers and genres. ;)
A good example of this, i think, are bands like Gorrilaz, especialy newer tracks. Not 100% hip-hop, but they are close in style in songs like Feel good inc. and Dirty Harry. In general, they are very hard to categorize: garage-rap-dance-techno sorta thing. And hey: the music is good(at least Demon Days is).
A pet peeve of mine are bands/acts that have a good single, think "hey, people liked that, lets do the same thing again and again" and get famous on it. It's boring. Both genres are guilty of this-yes, im looking at you Sean "i wish i was a yardie" Paul. Don't look away either, 90% of punk bands. Bands like Gorilaz and chili peppers-who dabbled in hip hop and funk in ye olde years-have a vaired sound and genre, and as a result, they produce realy good music.
Sorry for making Damn Albron's side project look so high and mighty, my knowledge of rap is not as good as i'd like.

If you like the rap in Gorillaz, an artist called MF Doom features a lot on their new tracks. Check him out, if you haven't already.

To the guy who said not all metal is like that, could you list some groups like that, I'd like to hear some different kinds of metal.

In response, I'll list you some rap which isn't tard like Eminem.

Jurassic 5 (Look out especially for a song called Concrete Schoolyard)
Scapegoat Wax (Some of their stuff is mislabelled I think, namely a song called Space to Share, but whoever it's by, it's still a good song)
MF Doom

That's all I can think of for the moment, but I'd be happy to try out some of those metal bands.

Chord: my etal knowledge, again, isnt what it should be, but if you havn't tried them yet, listen to System of A Down's Toxicity or Mesmerise: the best mix of blazing screaming crazyness and sophisticated screaming crazyness you'll hear in a long while. Very strange, middle eastern sound to them, as well as diversity and excelent tunes. Bad points: lyrics seem to be utterly random : "gonnorea gorgonzola!" being the low point.

Chord
12-25-2005, 12:43 PM
Oh good god no! System of a down are like plugging your wooden earholes with termites - It's absolutely the wrong thing to do! The music makes me cringe - it's so self indulgent. Every time a band does something "creative" or in other words, not rock music, everyone jumps on the bandwagon of plugging their holes with the band.

SoaD are a living joke. No one actually likes them, their a novelty act, like Funky Gibbon, only to the bearded ladies who used to listen to Korn and the metalheads who like to itch their balls constantly. It's cliched.

And for another thing, the "politics" of them. Oh, we think we'll be ever so risque and bash George Bush and republican politics, we're so obviously not the first band to do this, but no one seems to notice this, and we won't point out that we're not either, because risk means record sales!

It's despicable.

Er......first of all:I like the music. Obviously, we can't all like the same things, so i cant realy say anything bout that. I find them a breathe of fresh air, as they seem to be the last "popular" metal band amongst the, lets face it, shite that infests the market nowadays. If you are gonna be bad, i suppose, you can at least be original about it. Contrary to popular belief, they arn't "nu-metal", which people catergise them as cause they're had to define. 2nd, i can name a shitload of people in my area alone who like em, and they arn't "metalheads". And third-this pisses me off so very much-they've been "political" WAY WAY WAY before it-and them, for the matter-became popular. From the first album, they have been strongly vocal about issues, like the Amernian Genocide. They wern't the first, but they arn't media whores.
Green day, on the other hand......
I find myself in a hole now. I have started to defend a genre that i myself am not particulary fond of baring aforementioned band. Oh dear......paerhaps i shouldn't have said that out loud....

I like Rock. But I hate rap. Hip-Hop is my choice though. I hate this commercialized MTV garbage that is now known as "rap". Hip-Hop died a long time ago sadly. With the exception of MF Doom,Immortal Technique, and Psycho+Logical Records.

Daeruke, make a comprehensible post for once. Every post is less than two lines, and it's just "i hat so an so", "thingy is bad dont do it.

"so eock is so much better"
Also; you misspelt cock.

We seem to have quite a handful of rock fans. (: I, myself, am starting to like a lot of soft rock songs. I still can't stand those heavy-type rock songs...but some rock songs I'm able to tolerate now. ;D But I still have to go for rap as I said in my previous post a ways back. My favorite being Kanye West. I love his recent cd, Late Registration. <333 He's a good representation of a rapper.

I would say ROCK ALL THE WAY...:P. Rap is basiclly based on repititions and a lot of cussing. I agree rap does have meaning. But it basicly moves around: Girls, violence, getting high and getting shot. And rock is based on meaning. Many people may not understand it at first, but once u get used to it u understand the meaning.

Just my opinion. feel free to criticize.

akin_t
01-05-2006, 08:59 AM
Well I kind of disagree. Not all rap is that way; you've only been exposed to the black sheep of the genre. I like rap alot, sure they do talk about stuff like having money and all but IMO it's alright as long as the song makes sense and is easy on the ears.

I don't hate rock, I actually love certain songs in the genre, but then again I don't like rock songs because of the lyrics, I like the beats.

I think I'll go with rock :p.. although the music in hiphop can be good.. there are some real innovative DJs out there, but the word rap concentrates on the lyrics and that be beats and stuff has to fit in with the rapper style. and I hate that..

I don't like rap at all, mostly because of the melody and lyrics most of them have.

I like rock much more for its tunes and its lyrics are more than rap which seems mostly to be just about money, thugs, distasteful women, and shooting cops.

Graffik

Thus, the conclusion Rap < Rock -- Like Nas has said Hip-hop/Rap has fallen off, I would've said Rap a month ago, but then I realized every track I listened to was made like 7-10 years ago, while for Rock I could easily listen to some of the new tracks out there, so it means Rap is dead with nothing but dance moves, with the exception of Wu, and parts of NY, even though I listen to Rock more than before, I still listen to more rap and like it better as an overall genre...

Alex26
11-21-2007, 03:07 AM
rock :)

I dont hate rap, but it gets repetitive. Kill cops, smoke weed, have sex, tho, i cant deny sometimes some nice "original-ier" rap tracks are released, its still not enough to hook me on the genre.

I also cant deny, rock lyrics and some rythms are whore like a lot, but it happens less than on rap plus i love more the sound of the rock genre overall

Hmm, then you listen to the wrong hip hop, my friend. I'm all for hip hop, definitely not a repetitive genre. Listen to J Dilla, Styles Of Beyond, Slum Village, MF Doom, Brother Reade, etc. I could go on and on.

So for me, rap > rock yeah. But I can appreciate some kinds of rock too.

"screemo metal"? There is no such thing my friend of the old school Rock N roll days. There is hardcore, which is "screemoesque" I guess, but that is hardly metal.
