I'm english... so i dont like soccer... now football, thats a sport!!! i've been playing and watching it since i was very very very little... played for a team a couple of times but mostly recreational, i'm either a goalkeeper or a defender but i can also play as a winger if needed... but my main strenght is defence, i play most sundays with a group of mates, it's great to "accidently" mistime a tackle on someone you dont like ^^ (or people you do like if you're bored)

i hate goalie position b/c you're like the backbone of the team and when you let a goal in, the whole team blames you.
1 - 0 for ManU against Milan!!
5th minute just like the Roma game!
I predict a 8 - 0 =P

We lost to the better side, Milan thoroughly deserved it over both legs.
This is a lesson learned for our young lads, we'll be back, but we're gonna have to be better than that if this Generation of players is ever going to win it.
Full credit to Anceloti(sp?) though, he got them to put us straight on the back foot and we never got off of it.
In any case, the Prem is as good as ours and i'm confident about the FA cup if we can recreate some of our earlier form.
I love to play and watch by the by, I can use both feet, I can play anywhere in the midfield, box to box and on the wing and I can Play up front as well.

hm... in FA Final is Chelsea vs MU right ? i support Chelsea cuz' Jose Mourinho is so cool !!! and One special thing that made Milan won is cuz' Liverpool has waiting them at the final, that make extra motivation to Milan's players cuz' they really want to avenge for two years ago in Istanbul.

Well said Crimson, I just found this thread and wanted to give my 2 cents about United.
Yes, we may have lost to Milan but they were clearly lost to the better team. Milan may only be ranked 3rd in the Italian Premiership but that's only because of the point reduction at the beginning of the season due to match fixing. They obviously are the number 1 team in Italy. I find Inter over-rated.
First, Manchester Utd is 0-3 against Italy's giants in Champion's League competitions. That alone, is a big psychological hurdle. Second, I think the main reason why Manchester lost is because of Milan's backfield. Mainly, Gattuso... He shut Ronaldo down completely in both games. It wasn't until Gattuso getting injured in the first leg that Man Utd was able to make that awesome comeback. When the second leg came around, I was praying that Gattuso wouldn't recover because he was listed as being 50-50 to play. Although he was writing to local newspapers urging Milan fans not to worry... Which consequently, made me worry.
Gattuso is not only an amazing defender but he knows how to pump the rest of his players up. Man Utd could barely get an attack going. Did anyone see Giggs, Scholes, or Rooney do anything? Ronaldo was being guarded by Gattuso at all times and his tenacious d basically shut him down and any passes being made were being intercepted left and right. That on top of that our backfield played like crap... Heinse, mainly... And Vidic is just coming off of a collarbone injury also contributed against or defeat. When playing against world class players like Seedorf, Pirlo, Inzaghi, and especially KAKA your backfield has to be at the top of their game and they definitely weren't.
In any case, although we lost there is a lesson to be learned. Our team is young and with veteran players such as scholes, giggs, and the living legend Sir Alex Ferguson leading the way we can definitely looking for a formidable contender for next years Champion's League title. Anyways, at least we have the EPL title and now we'll definitely be going all out for the FA cup title. 2 Titles may not be as good as a Treble but its better nothing.
L'Arc Enzeru
05-05-2007, 11:10 AM
You got a point Zilla-kun, Milan is obviously number 1 team in Italy, with Point reduction at the beggining of season they can ranked 3rd in Italian League, and i'm sure if Milan didn't get point reduction , they will be ranked in 1st and get the scudetto.
Gojira
05-05-2007, 11:46 AM
Heheh, thank you Enzeru-kun. Yeah, ac milain definitely would have won the title as well if it weren't for their point reduction... I'm just hoping liverpool beats that *ss in athens. Make it a repeat from isthanbul 2 years ago. By the way, that was probably one of the greatest comebacks I have ever seen in soccer. Besides, of course, man utds come back over bayern in '99. Go United!!! There's always next year...

05-08-2007, 12:27 PM
Yesh. Yesh. Yesh. *bows* I like to think it had a little to do with the fans... Mainly me but I'll give it to the players... they might have a little to do with their victory. Heheh, anyways, they Chelsea might still be in it. Man Utd might have some point deducted because of their victory against Everton(4-2, from a comeback!!!) recently.
Apparently, Everton's main goalie, the American Tim Howard, is on loan from Man Utd. So when Everton and Man Utd played he wasn't allowed to play against his own team causing everton to use their backup goalie which might have been the cause for their lose(obviously, it was because he sucked). Right now the EPL is reviewing contracts made between the teams to see if there was any clause that stated that he couldn't play against his own team. If there isn't and he was benched for no reason then... It could result in a point deduction and Chelsea might still be in it.... NUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!

Neil Lennon isn't fat. He's the most exciting player in Europe!
Thomas Graveson wasn't disappointing!
Kenny Miller did score enough!
What an awful season Celtic have had. They played well against Man U away and Benfica at home and have scraped through every single game since then (apart from the ones they lost, obviously).
I'd also say Rangers are more likely to win the SPL next season as well...
Oh well, we've got the league, got to the second round of the Champions League and have a Scottish Cup final against Dunfermline so the season hasn't really been a disaster....
I hope Milan beat Liverpool. Not just because they beat Celtic in the knockout stages and thus we went out against the champions so that's ok but because I don't really like Liverpool (I did want Man U to win). Also Gattuso is awesomeness in a can.
Gojira

Yeah, Gattuso is the man... If only that argentenian bastard stayed on the Rangers(I'm pretty sure he played there first), then it would probably be Man utd in these finals... Meh, its all good... He's Italian...
o.O
Also, yeah. He played for Rangers but Barry Ferguson was coming through the youth and they played him in the middle of the park instead (he is nowhere near as good as Gattuso) and just shunted Gattuso around an dthen he was kinda pushed out...
He went to Sampdoria (I think) for a season and then Milan bought him.
I wouldn't say that if I were you.. that's a dangerous thing to say
sticks and stones will be thrown at you...
If you know about Neil Lennon and recent events sorrounding him you'd get the joke.
He's a defensive midfield player who can not pass the ball forward and he's scored about twice in the last sevenseasons for Celtic. Also I obviously don't mean he's obese, I mean the man is fit. It's just that he is bigger than the average professional footballer and when you tie that in with the fact he strolls around the park it becomes a joke that he's fat.
Heck, when Celtic lost to AC Milan in the Champions League Graeme Sounness and Ruud Gullit were laughing when he took his top off at the end.
It was very funny.

Too bad for Liverpool today. I believe they really deserved that match, but they did mess up quite a bit towards the end, even though they did manage to score. Unlucky to liverpool, AC's first goal REALLY lucky..i mean that deflection.
Still though, i gues it was AC just getting back at Liverpool because of the final two years ago.
Gojira
05-23-2007, 10:39 PM
Agreed... Liverpool was playing pretty sloppy in the end. If you look carefully, Kuyt was offside when he scored. I thought Gerrard and Pennant played pretty well. Risse had a couple firecrackers but all in all I think AC outplayed them.
Yes, their first goal was more of a fluke but Kaka gave a sweet through ball on that second goal. Anyways, Ac Milan really did deserve it. It would have been a sweet final if it was Man utd and chelsea played though... Damn, I really did think it was Man utd.'s year to win the champion's league.

See, I almost agree with you guys... I, myself, am a huge Man Utd fan... and the mere fact that we were basically owning throughout the Champions League tournament(7-1 against Roma? please) definitely means we should've made it to the finals but Liverpool had to beat Chelsea to advance into the finals. That's no easy task... This is the same team that just beat Man Utd in the FA cup.
I don't know, I still consider Gerrard one of England's best and I thought he was the only thing keeping Liverpool motivated yesterday. Meh, whatever... the only solace I take from this is the fact that the team that Man Utd lose to was the same team that won it all... At least we lost to the team that won it rather than the team that didn't.

Although MU is really have very good players and coach, but that not always decide or gives victory to a team, everything can happen in football, and that's what made football be the most popular sport in the world.
Milan already played good in the final, they really deserve it, beat Bayern Muenchen in Olympia, freakinly beat MU into a pulp, and got their revenge against Liverpool, they really number 1 team in Europe.
Chelsea !!! they did really good in FA final, and about Giggs, it's not a goal, it's a fault ! and Drogba finally be the first player to score a goal in New Wembley. Chelsea really deserve it, they played very good at that match, although MU too...

So does anyone have an opinion on David Beckham goin to LA to play MLS?
I'm from Germany, so I heard a lot about him with England being so close and I personally don't like him much. The reasons he is going to LA are money and fame, surely not for the Soccer.
I do like the fact that the MLS is getting a world wide known name in their league! American soccer has the chance to be best in the world in my opinion. With all of the crazy athletes in all the other leagues it is not a dumb thought to think if soccer continues to grow in popularity that some of those freak athletes would grow into soccer and dominate. USA has such a vast amount and diversity of people, it really can't happen any other way.

I agree with you, however I have to say that it will be alot more years be4 USA poses a serious threat to the world superpowers in football...it's kind of what Mexico used to go through before...they did not have any players playing in europe and no good youth teams...now mexico has a decent number playin in Europe (Pardo, Osorio in VfB Stuttgart, Salcido with PSV, Castillo with Olympiakos Piraneus, Marquez with Barcelona, Guardado just joined Deportivo La Coruña, Bravo will probably end up in Europe as well); also Mexico won the u-17 World Cup in Peru 2 years ago and now all these kids are in the u-20 team and kicking butt this year in Canada...just as an example Giovanni Dos Santos plays for Barcelona and Carlos Vela belongs to Arsenal...
Not a lot of USA players play in Europe (at least starting for the national team), they need to export more...so that they can know European style of play and not stumble against European teams in the WC...they already have a nice youth team system so there is hope for the future...but they need more players playing in Europe
Oh and about Beckham...well history repeats itself...you go where the most money is at the end of your career, that's how people like Pele with Cosmos, Valderrama, Stoichkov, Djorkaeff, Donadoni etc etc ended their careers in America...

You make some good points! Sure, while the better soccer is played over in Europe, the Sport here is in GREAT lack of being taken serious. No one here cares enough about soccer to pay any kind of attention to what is goin on overseas. Honestly you will have to admit that most Americans would not be able to tell you where most of the European Countries are. The only way to get peoples attention here in the States is to get the League here to a Global status of supremacy. The leagues here (MLB, NFL, NBA & NHL) are all the cream of the crop when it comes to Global competition. The best of the entire world come here to play in those leagues. It has more to do with the feelings and thoughts of the mass sports fan here in the states, and sorry, but most are ignorant! They need to build up the MLS so people here in this country will get excited, because they will not reach out for the sport but are waiting for it to come to them.
Again I am talking about the common mass body of people not the individual. I know that Soccer is growing in popularity at a quick rate.

07-16-2007, 03:48 AM
Well, Beckham isn't as good as he was while he was on Man Utd and because of his popularity all over the world he became "bigger" than the team itself. Sir Alex, though I couldn't understand why he did so at the time, probably did the best thing by letting him go.
Since he's been Real Madrid he hasn't been completely dominate because he was riddled with injuries as well the fact that he isn't as young as he used to be. With him going to the States, its probably a good thing for American soccer because it brings more attention to the sport here and will probably encourage more internationally known players to start coming over to the states... But I think if more players do so its probably more as move they will make because they are nearing the end of their careers.
But yeah... Soccer as a sport definitely has been growing pretty quickly in the last 5 years and with Beckham playing for the Galaxy it will probably add to it.

Meh... that is nothing... US DOMINATED in the CONCACAF Gold Cup this last June... US is coming up in World Soccer whether people like to admit it or not. If you don't believe me... Check out the Game Winner in the Final. USA 2 - 1 Mexico
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVkvm2xD0-k&mode=related&search=
Damn.
Yeah but that does not mean anything...US did not even play well in the final, also we saw what happened when they played the Copa America with the Big Boys...0 points only 1 goal scored, last place...so when it comes to real competition against real teams such as Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay etc... the US demonstrated that it cannot yet keep up...while Mexico gave Brazil their only loss in the tournament, beat Paraguay 6-0 (Paraguay was reputed the 3rd best team after Argentina and Brazil) and got to the semis...the Gold Cup I am sorry to say, is a mediocre CONCACAF tournament with no real competition other than Mexico and the US (in fact except for Canada once, either Mexico or USA has won the tournament every time). About the Ferhaber goal, you cannot gauge the US dominance just with 1 goal...I bet he could not even score a goal like that again even if he tried 100 times...now if you want a taste of real class check out Nery Castillo's goal against Brazil...

He played the last like, 15 mins of the game. I saw him take one penalty kick (I didnt watch all the last 15 min, Man vs. Wild was on). MLS needs to promote the sport some more, which is why they hired the dude that promoted the NFL, and made it huge. We got some good players, but Europe still pwns us, along w/ the rest of hte world. Give us a few years, and soccer will probably be more popular in the states.

Yeah, MLS is cool but if you want to see real soccer you should watch European Soccer. Mainly, English Football... That's definitely one of the biggest and richest leagues in the world. I'm sure you've heard of some of the teams... Manchester United, Chelsea United, Liverpool, Arsenal, New Castle... These are some of the best teams in the world.
Actually, I heard that Chelsea is supposed to be touring the US right now. I'm not sure if that was a rumor or not though.

I actually prefer to watch South American Soccer teams play, like on the spanish channel(I dont speak spanish, but I love their announcers). I like their style more, just going all out and not poking around looking for an opening, they dribble right down and MAKE an opening or get taken out. Thats how I play soccer, so I like to watch that lol. Euro soccer still pwns I think, I just prefer SA soccer.

Try goltv (for liga, bundesliga, and serie A, as well as all kinds of South American and central american soccer) fox soccer channel (for the premier and some Serie A) fox sports in spanish (same as fox soccer channel except with more south american soccer), espn deportes (espn in spanish, shows the champions league) and setanta sports (shows the champions league and french, irish, english and scottish leagues).
All of these are available via DirecTv in the States.

Soccer is my favorite sport. It was the only one I really enjoyed playing. In fact back in High School that was the best sport I ever played. I didnt play on a team unfortunately. In gym class though, we had a few students who were actually on the soccer team. I was about as good as they were without ever actually playing it for real. But, its been a few years since then. I probably suck completely now. -_-

You usuallly wont loose your skill in footwork ( at least I dont lol), but shooting is another story. If I dont practice in a while, I suck at it. Teams with one big money man behind them are pretty much the evil of football.
Sure Manchester United dominated the 90s but they did so by bringing forward young talent and whilst they did spend a heck of a lot of money they never spent more than they earned.
Chelsea on the other have had losses of more than £100 million. Essentially they seriously distorted the competition.
Them and Gretna are pretty soulless.
Anyway, seems Celtic are doing well. Beating Spartak Moscow was a pretty major achievement considering how good a team they were. Not at all sure if we'll make it through the group stages though, AC Milan are almost certainly going through and there isn't a lot to choose between Benfica (unless they've greatly strengthened since last season), Celtic and Shaktar Donestk (that's a spelling error right there).
Still think Rangers are going to win the league though, they seem more resiliant than Celtic.
Scotland definately isn't qualifying from the European Championship group of death (world champions Italy, world runner up France and quarter finalists Ukraine) but I think we could push for second place (as in only be a couple of points off 2nd). If we manage to beat Lithuania and results go our way before losing to France on Wednesday we have half a chance.

Anyways, since I'm posting here gotta say the Man Utd. game was awesome... Arsenal scored off a fluke handball... Seems only just that Man Utd scored right back because of a handball penalty in the box... AND how can you forget Hargreaves' sick, sick, sick penalty kick... Left Lehman rooted on the spot... Only real opposition left is Chelsea at the Bridge... Otherwise, looks like the title is ours...
Oh yeah... Mr.Ronaldo with 38 goals??? Fifa player of the year without a doubt... Nuff said.

Yeah, Barca was really putting some serious plays together there were more than a few close calls but overall Man Utd.'s back 4 handled their offense pretty well in the close calls.
This weekend is gonna be tough... 3 point lead going into the Bridge? Plus, chelsea hasn't lost there in God knows how long. But if Man Utd does loss and there is a tie. Man Utd can still win the title as long there aren't any more losses because of our amazing goal differential... But I'm hoping for Man Utd. victory. Yeah, we had the best chance of the game early on in the game but it made no difference in the scoreline did it? :)
Well, they did have 18 shots but they were making had some close calls in and around the box with superb passing. Barca controlled the midfield on both sides of the pitch. 35% possession is just plain ugly. Still with Barca's majority of the possession in that game combined with poor, poor clearances from Man Utds back 4 Barca could have made things a lot more difficult.
But on a more positive note, although Barca did have these close calls with the return of Vidic we were able to shut down any potential threats very quickly. Its good to see the defensive partnership between Vidic/Ferdanand back in full effect again. Personally I think Man Utd. came out of that one lucky. If Vidic hadn't been playing I think the Devils could've been going into Trafford with a pretty steep hill to climb.
Was in the 2nd minute, he was still starting out. If it had been a few mins later he would have had the mindset to score.
Still, the man is the best goal scorer on the planet. It was heartbreaking to see him miss such a huge goal especially since he had the keeper so completely beat. I guess it just came down to Ronaldo succumbing to early game jitters.

Brilliant season by Manchester United.
Started off with a Ronaldo red card, after which he missed 3 games that United lost one, drew the other two. Were 11th at one stage of the season, and then 8th for another 2 weeks. Then fought our way back up.
- Ronaldo
- Vidic
- Rooney
- Tevez
- Evra
Could go on, but those were the players that definitely stood out.

Was a classic chelsea goal. Aka rubbish goal.
Van der sar slipped after a shot taken from midfield that deflected off two United players, and Lampard slotted it in - just BARELY past the already slipped Van der sar's hands.
United dominated this game so far, and deserve to have at least 3 extra goals. All three from point blank missed.
Ronaldo has been very disciplined, staying on the left and not taking a wild shot. Has been workin all day for it, beating defenders. Love to see!
Better possession. Better passing. Better accuracy. Better play by United
They not only should, they DESERVE to win this.

What a great game. I am ****ing ecstatic. We dominated the first half and should have put the game beyond chelsea but they scored a fortunate goal to give them the edge going into the second half, which they then ended up dominating themselves. They should have killed the game in the second half but we held on somehow.
Extra time was just a war of attrition and it ended up just being a case of running the clock down...but Chelsea ****ing moaning about tevez putting it out for the throw. How the **** can they moan about that when they did it twice earlier in the game. Typical egotistical mardarse bastarding chelsea players....and then Didier Drogba you silly silly boy, you can't raise your hand, you just can't. If he does leave chelsea now it will be in shame...because he no doubt would have been a penalty taker.
Either way when penaltys came I was so tense...probably the most nervous I have ever been...and I have every right to be that way. I've seen my team or my country lose too many times on penaltys and with so many disappointments I had no reason to be positive at all but they did us proud.
Hargreaves - Unsaveable
Ronaldo - as soon as he did the start stop shoot feign...and the keeper doesn't move you are ****ing dead in the water..I knew he would miss. 42 goals in all competitions and it was written on the wall that if anyone would miss it would be him.
In any case. This may be the greatest night of my life.

You couldn't have said it any better Pierrot, exactly my thoughts! +REP
This is the first time we've won a penalty shoot out. I couldn't have been any more nervous. Felt like I would have a heart attack - almost in tears with the win.
Ronaldo - as soon as he did the start stop shoot feign...and the keeper doesn't move you are ****ing dead in the water..I knew he would miss.
Exactly my thoughts. He had no momentum to do anything.
And when Ronaldo missed everyone knew we had lost it. He was crying because he knew he had lost it. But Terry missing the winning goal.. there can be no greater miracle.. Van Der Sar diving the wrong way too...
Unbelievable.
United deserved to win it by all accounts though - we should have been up 3-0 in the first half. But hell, what a way to win it.
Loved that Ronaldo accepted that even though he is the Golden Boy - his mistake would have cost them. He was on the ground crying in relief as everyone else celebrated.
This moment is beyond words.

Psh. Real Madrid can hog all the United players they took already (Bekcham [left them too], Nistelrooy, Heinze, etc)
On a night of European glory, Cristiano Ronaldo gave Reds fans even more reason to celebrate when he quashed rumours that he could join Real Madrid this summer by pledging his future to United.
When asked by a TV reporter whether he would be leaving the club with which he has already achieved so much in his short career, Ronaldo gave the emphatic reply all Reds fans wanted to hear.
“No, no, no. I’m going to stay,” he said.
It was a fitting end to an emotional night for the Portuguese winger who opened the scoring in the 26th minute, but then missed his spot-kick in the dramatic penalty shoot-out.
“When I missed the penalty, I thought we were going to lose,” he said.
“I played well in the game and I scored a goal, but I missed the penalty. I thought it was going to be the worst day of my life.
“But the lads did their jobs. They believed they were going to score, and they scored. Penalties is a lottery, you never know who is going to win, but I think we deserve to win because we played better in the game.
“It means everything to me because we won both trophies, the Champions League and the League, so I feel very happy. It is one of the most happy days of my life. I feel very, very proud.”
Short answer - no.

GLORY GLORY UNITED!!!!
Wow... What an amazing game... Ronaldo with an amazing header... Could've been a higher score line...
United DOMINATED the first half but it seemed like the garbage goal at the end of the half by Lampard destroyed United's moral and effected their performance throughout the second half... Chelsea fought hard... but United's defense kept it even until the end of the 2nd half...
The shootout... Legendary... Anelka... HAHAHAHAHHA, what can I say about the dude... Van D totally schooled him... Van D is pointing to the left which way do you think he'll go? Top Notch mind games played by the dutch man... Reminds me of barthez's antics back in the day(cleaning his shoes in the middle of shootout!!!)... But yeah... I feel for Terry... He could've won it... He had the game in his pocket... Went the right way but he missed the shot. In any case... It would've been him or Ronaldo... I prefer the current scoreline.
But yeah... Still busy floating in air... Amazing game to say the least...

Hehehehhe... Done and done...
@ Real Madrid/Man United trades...
Beckham... Although he was at the peak of his popularity he definitely was on the decline of his skill... Ferguson gladly traded him because he was bigger than the team. At the time it looked to be the wrong choice but guess who took his spot/number... A Mr. 42 Goals in a season... Christiano Ronaldo. Who would you rather have on your team?
Nistelrooy... Garbage goal specialist. He knew how to be in the right spot at the right time... He definitely could score but at the end of the day I'd take Rooney/Tevez who play as a team and set up goals rather than an individual like the Nistelrooy...
Heinze... ****ing overrated... I have always thought he sucked.
In my opinion... Real got the shorter end of the stick. And um... Look where the finished! :D
Ronaldo obviously has many options... But United is building their future offense around him, rooney, tevez, hargreaves, anderson, and in the near future, although I hate this dude... Nani... With Scholes and Giggs at the end of their careers United is looking to build a young team and so far they are transitioning pretty well...
Um... Champions League title? XD
Manchester will probably pay whatever Ronaldo wants at the end of his contract... Especially since this guy hasn't peaked yet... 42 goals in one season? At his age he only can go upwards... Are you kidding me... Christiano isn't going anywhere for a long, long time. :)
!Glory Manchester United!
!Kings of Europe!
EDIT: OH yeah... The EuroCup is going to Spain...

Both teams had some bad luck with the wet grass. If Van Der Sar hadn't slipped he would have saved the goal, most likely meaning Man Utd win. Had Terry not slipped Chelsea would have won.
Drogba's little slap thing made me laugh so hard!! Tevez didn't have a great game. Not many things went his way, like that slide in the second half were he just missed it. There was also a time when the Chelsea player ran into Tevez and fell down, foul was called on Tevez because the ref was to far away to see who it who...

Last night was great, had to leave at half time and got at work and watched the extra time's and pens. Wtf was Ronaldo doing for his pen? Stopping and taking it without a run up makes it so the Goal keeper can tell which way he's gonna go, and I laughed at Terry, the only reason why he was able to take the pen was 'cause he's the captain otherwise they would of told the defender to F off xD.
Drogba was Hilarious the way he slapped Vidic and then hid behind Lapard once he had set Vidic off xD.
And Giggs getting the deciding Pen when its the Game that he beats Charltons record for number of United games is just pure win ^_^.

Heinze wasn't overated, He had an Immense first season but after that he was poor in truth. Seemed to have lost his edge, Plus he was want away anyways. Wanted off to the scousers of all people. Glad to see the back of the muggy twat.
Beckham definately wasn't on the decline when he left, hehad his best years ahead of him if he had stayed. His last season for us was one of his best, so I don't know how you can say he was on the decline, Gojira.
Van Nistelrooy was an amazing striker. World class. I'd take him over Rooney just because of how inconsistant Rooney is. It was a shame we had to sell him in the end but you can't go off like he did.
John Terry was unlucky for sure, but I don't have an ounce of sympathy for him, It's part and parcel of Penaltys, somebody has to miss. Night Prowler He took the Penalty in Drogbas place, he wouldn't have been in the 5 otherwise. He took it because he is a ****ing amazing captain and a brave guy.
No shame in saying that when Ronaldo missed I was crying because I thought it was over. But Football has a way of rewarding the Good guys and that is exactly what happened.

I guess the latest reports weren't read. Ronaldo specifically stated: "I want to play for Real Madrid"
That doesn't mean he will - he says its up to Man Utd and his agent if a deal will be struck.
Bloody Real. Finally got reported.
On 27 May, Manchester United made clear its intention to report Real Madrid to FIFA if it continued to involve itself in the future of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Unfortunately, Real Madrid has not kept its own counsel and the Club feels it has no alternative but to make a formal complaint to the world governing body, which it has done today.
The precise content and nature will remain confidential.

06-14-2008, 06:53 AM
Err.. ok. Refer to what I said before... not just my last post.
I meant that even though they did win, it wasn't something that highlights their superiority. The point earlier was that just because they won the world cup they would win the Euro. I disagreed, and pointed out that they were extremely lucky to get past Australia in the round of 16 game in the World Cup. If Grosso hadn't dived they wouldn't have got the 92nd min penalty that won them the game.
And the FIFA president even apologised to Australia for that incident, everyone knew it was a dive.
Therefore, I said Italy didn't really deserve it, and as a result they would not do that well in the Euro. It doesn't mean that they can't win the Euro, they do still have a chance.
My point was that you can't base their WC win and say they're a more powerful team than the others.
Which is true isn't it? One loss and one draw (which they should've lost but the GK saved the penalty in the last 10 mins. Very lucky)

One loss and one draw (which they should've lost but the GK saved the penalty in the last 10 mins. Very lucky)
i agree with the whole wc vs eu thing, its two different tournaments.. but i saw that save and it was not luck, but an AMAZING save. I have taped most the games so far and ran it back and forth. You can clearly see he reaches up to deflect it with his hand, then raises his right foot to do the rest. He picked the right corner and made a fantastic reflex instinctual play.
BUt i will jump on every band wagon that says italy does not deserve the WC cause oh how i dislike that team! Just goes to show you, that in a tournament anything can happen. Look at the last EU that GREECE won. Now where are they? Surely that was not a "deserved" win in the sense, but all that counts is they have the trophy.
Thus is the life in sports.
But yeah.. Hopefully Italy loses again and off they go back to their whatever they came from. If they were to advance or perhaps even win i would be detested to say the least.
Rayster
06-14-2008, 01:15 PM
I don't deny Buffon's skill.. he's the #1 GK in the world for a reason.
The fact that Italy conceded a penalty in the last 10 mins, and they were level scored, means they were "lucky" to get out of it alive. I never meant the save itself
I meant the team.
Besides if I wanted to mention the save, you also recognise:
He picked the right corner and made a fantastic reflex instinctual play.
He could have dived the other way.
Anyway, again, it wasn't about the save, but about the situation. Italy, being the team they're supposed to be, shouldn't have allowed them to get a penalty, let alone making the game that close. They saved embarrassment... somewhat.
Just goes to show you, that in a tournament anything can happen. Look at the last EU that GREECE won. Now where are they? Surely that was not a "deserved" win in the sense, but all that counts is they have the trophy.
That was the whole point!! They didn't deserve it, so follow up tournaments PROVE it, just like this one with Italy.
And besides, Greece play almost like Chelsea. The retarded "must defend everything" tactic that no one likes to watch.
Abramovich sacked two perfectly elite coaches because they didn't play "swash buckling football" like Man Utd or Arsenal, or Barcelona, etc.
All Greece does is defend, and pass the ball around at the back. That's why everyone hated them winning the Euro last time. it's the cheapest way to do it.
And that's why England do so poor, because they have such class and potential that they all try and play "awesome football" and get screwed over in defence.

^ I know eh. Unbelievable... almost.
I remember watching the Russia v Spain game, and thinking - Russia is playing brilliantly.. and will rip other teams to come, especially Greece, who were in the same group. Even though they lost that first game 4-1 they were extremely unlucky, so you KNOW that like Turkey, they weren't just "lucky" to get where they are.
strikers or goal scorers always run the risk of premadonna like behavior. Man i cant even begin to describe how much it frustrates me when i see people looking past the rest pointing at their chest. It just gets me boiling. This is a team sport.. he might not want to believe it, but without the defense stopping goals and the midfield feeding him these balls.. ah whatever..
Hm, maybe you haven't heard all of his post match reports. Every single match he says "it's not me - it's the guys giving the ball to me".
He's always congratulated his teammates after the games for their team effort.
If he really does want to leave I say we take Madrid for a ride, We better a get a good price.
Us United fans don't want players who don't want to wear the shirt. Get rid of him.
Aye. Imagine the morale in the changing rooms.
"I don't actually want to be here, but you're paying me more so I'll stay."
Yeah I was thinking exactly the same thing. If he stayed, after already expressing his interest, the team chemistry would be lost. The fans would be unsure.

And Barry Bonds said he did not take steroids.. :whatevah:
you know as well as i that in the eye of media a true character is almost always hidden.
Actions speak louder than words man!

Actions?
Scoring 44 goals as a midfielder and taking his team to win the EPL twice in a row? Winning the Champions League? Don't just take into account the missed penalty. He scored United's only goal, and of course had an integral part in every game, especially that last game, being man-marked heavily and therefore allowing other players to run free.
Then there's his massive "Assists" tally............ :p

I spoke nothing of his talent. It is completely apparent he is one of the best footballers on this planet at the moment. Without his skill he would not be in the situation he is in atm. That goes without saying. I am not ragging on the guys skill at all. I love to watch brilliant soccer being played.. I have a problem with the dudes attitude (more athletes in general)
Believe me, if this dude had a decent character i would be singing his praises.
With that said. It is reality that i do not know this guy personally. All my opinions are formed through articles and quotes of his i read.

Seems like this;
Scoring 44 goals
this
taking his team to win the EPL twice in a row
and this
Winning the Champions League
Have got to his head. Big-headed players have that personality. What do you think the welcome will be like at Madrid?
"Wow, Ronaldo's coming. Now an SS will NEVER get the chance to play, and we have a ball-hog. (not literally, but connotations on glory-hog too :p.)

Hm.. I wonder if anyone else would have stayed at Man Utd though, had it been their dream to play at Real Madrid, and they were offered a chance that might only come once.
It is after all, about his career. He's only 23. Still got ages, so if he's to make a mistake, now's the time to make it, so he has enough time to remedy it.
What about everyone else? If you were in that situation, would you move, considering you've won every notable thing to win at United?

I wouldn't. Honestly, United made him, just like it made Beckham. Look at where he is now, playing at LA Galaxy for the sole fact that he gets paid 3/4x the amount of ANY other player on the team.
Same with Owen, Liverpool made him, made a false move to Madrid, but at least he's sort of rectified it by coming back to Newcastle.
It's tradition, really. You think you're really good, you go to Madrid, you flop, you go elsewhere. Only player I've ever seen make an improvement at Madrid was Van Nistelrooy, and that took him 2 seasons!

Though Nistelrooy did score 44 goals as his max (cherry picker striker) at United as well, so if you think about it, he hasn't scored that much for Real (has he?) so really.. he didn't "improve" which holds the point that players who go to Madrid get rolled. Badly.
Reporter: "Will you ever go to Real Madrid?"
Kaka: "No *smiles* I've seen what happens to players that go there."

He's never reached his 44 goal record at Madrid, but it took him 2 years to become a striker competing for the Top Scorer, which he eventually did win. You have to remember, 44 is a mammoth score.

Kaka: "No *smiles* I've seen what happens to players that go there."
At least some people know what they're talking about.
Big speculation about Big Phil laying down £50m on the table to get him for Chelski though.

hm.. perhaps this goal scoring thing also has to do with the style of play. English football is a lot of long balls to the front, perhaps creating more space and scoring opportunities for the striker.
Dunno if that is fact, just an idea.
And when you are surrounded by so much "super star" talent, that does not always translate into more success. With more quality players, the more the ball gets shared. The easier it is for drama to disrupt in the club house.
Man i still cant believe the Dutch are out of the tournament :whatevah:

Well, it's a cruel game. Just as the Croatians learnt.
xD
The Russians are my heroes now.
Go Russia!

Dammit. Oranje yesterday wasn't even a shadow of the Oranje in the poule. Just.. dammit. >_<

Yeah. That really sums up Holland in all. One day they can be World Champions. The next they can be made dunces by the easiest of teams.
go russia. watch out for us in the semis.
Miyata

Russia 'should' have their hands full for the semis, whichever team goes through.
(Note the inverted commas.)
yeah it'll be tough.
we'll see though.

Thank you Spain. :kamina:

Judging on the match itself, it was justified that it went to penalties. Nothing to split them really. Spanish were full offence, Italy were full defence, so penalties look inevitable.
But I'm happy it was Spain.
:)
rematch in semis.
hopefully it won't be like last game.

I can't wait for Turkey to get annihilated. Sweet revenge for how they took out Croatia.
Miyata

Lol. They probably will get annihilated. They're without Emre, Arda, Tuncay and Volkan. It'll be a tough game for 'em :<
But Croatia got what they deserved.
