Xenogears: The best plot in any video game, period. Great character development and music (by Yasunori Mitsuda, notice a trend here?) and a very fun battle system. Also an interesting note, the first RPG to have a fully controllable camera.

Shadow of the Colossus: This is not a game, it's a work of art. It's completely unlike anything I've ever played, and it rocks.

One of those two would be my pick for best game ever, but there are a lot of other games that I feel like I should mention, such as Kingdom Hearts I/II, FFX/VIII, Ocarina of Time, WoW, SSB:Melee, and Metroid Prime

MGS3 was definitelly sad, especially as you mentioned - the sadness and The Boss comes off as a real hero in the end. MGS series are my 2nd favorite series ever, next to Prince of Persia. :)

I agree. MGS: SE is one of the best games that I have ever played. I cannot really say if it is the best though. But, it certainly has the best story and plot of any game I have ever played and it also has the best character development and designs of any game out there.

FFXII gets a little (very) boring after playing it repeatedly for 200 hours, so much in fact that I did not even finish even when I go to the last boss as a level 80+. Leveling also is probably too easy hence making the game almost too easy. The FF series is the best game series ever made IMO though.

Other honorable mentions: Resident Evil 4(best action-horror, but the end falters a bit), GTA:SA (most freedom in a game), Halo 2 (arguably best multiplayer), Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (most awesome place, but repetitive and a little easy), and other games I cannot remember.

Yeah I know, but its just evil to make me choose between the Zelda games. There's no way I could. I mean you got the classics for NES, and between those I like The legend of Zelda more then Zelda II: The adventure of Link. Zelda: A link to the past for SNES is just an all around great game that I can [and have] played over and over. For N64 I like Zelda: Ocarina of Time better then Zelda: Majora's Mask. And the new Zelda: Twilight Princess completely rocked.

Yeah, I guess that's true... There aren't too many old school games that I still consider classics... Has anyone played the PC game, The Longest Journey? That game came out in 2000 or so... They made a sequel recently called dreamfall but it wasn't that good. Anyways, that's another really good game with an amazing storyline, and great gameplay.

The fights against The Sorrow, Ocelot, and the last boss (you know who) were utterly mind-blowing. Especially the last fight. The ending was perhaps one of the best in video game history and definitely one of the saddest.

The MGS names are so cool and the characters are even cooler. This series owns in the action/stealth realm and this game owns all!!!

I also really liked MGS the original for PS with Psycho Mantis being perhaps the coolest boss in video game history (right next to Sephiroth). Come to think of it, that game had the best bosses and the most memorable/human bosses of any game ever made including MGS3.

The same thing for the very fun Resident Evil 4. With its awe-inspiring levels (from peasant shacks and woods to Gothic castles and alpine forests) and awesome bosses and characters (especially that little castle boy-guy). Extremely memorable.

OoT is also a favorite that reinvented the genre. I also thought Majora's Mask was quite fun. Goldeneye 007 was my old favorite FPS and also redefined that genre (not to mention the best James Bond game ever made). Super Mario 64 I unfortunately sold because I was retarded, but it was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FUN and the best N64 game period (right next to Goldeneye).

Alundra for PS introduced me to the RPG and to this day I regret its loss (I sold it too :() as it was awesome.

Finally, Splinter Cell deserves some kudos for the best pure stealth game and the Armored Core series for the best mecha series I have ever played.

Damn, Xion you got some good taste in games. I almost forgot about Psycho Mantis... What made that fight even better was that it broke the fourth wall and actually got the gamer involved... Yeah, I know that sounds stupid... How can a player be more involved if he's already playing the game but anyone who hasn't played MGS 1 probably won't understand how they made a relatively easy(once you figure out what you had to do) boss fight memorable... It was actually MGS 1 that really got me hooked as a gamer. I really was just a casual gamer until my friend gave me MGS and FFVII to play after that I was hooked.

Though MGS2 didn't live up to the hype I was expecting for a MGS game I still consider it a great game for the PS2. I just wish we couldn't been Solid Snake instead of that sexually ambiguous Raiden. But, I will admit I played through it a few times, just because I liked the stealth aspect of it so much. Using the radar to see the movements of the enemy is so fun but as far as MGS 3 goes... You really feel the absence of the radar right from the beginning. But yeah, I really gotta they really pulled out all the stops. I mean they went all out for that game. From gameplay, to the amazing story it had, to the implementation of the new camouflage system, to hunting different animals to use as a quick stamina boost or as a potential weapon, to the boss battles(the boss battle with The End, and the last 2 boss battles were craaazy), to just every little detail about the game... I just makes me wonder how good the MGS4 will be for the ps3.

For people who are on the fence about buying a PS3 or not... this will be your reason to get it. Judging from vids of the game, seeing solid snake in the near future... i can't wait to see the technologies they have in store... namely the active-camo suit(basically a mix between the invisible camo suit in MGS1 and the camouflage used in MGS3)... Alright I'm gonna stop now... In a nutshell, the MGS series is a must-have game for all playstaion owners.

Final Fantasy 9 has to be the best, the story is amasing, gameplay is great (however it does have 1 minor downfall, but every game has 1 little tweak it could do with, and i think a slow ATB bar isn't something to complain about, it does sometimes help) and i can replay this game to death (completed it on at least 14 different files, almost all with a dead Ozma as well)
The closest game to that has to be Star Ocean 2 another game with great replayability, story, gameplay, music, etc. As far as nonrpg's go it has to be the Dynasty Warriors series (not including the first one, that was the worst excuse for a fighting game ever!!!)

1. Mike Tyson's Punch out. (Can't tell me this game wasn't tight) At one time this was rated top 10 best games of all time.

2. Street Fighter II (Championship Edition and/or Turbo is as far as I will go, but the others were rediculous. This game paved the way for all the fighting games we see)

3. Chrono Trigger (Goku with a sword = Win! Has one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard, plus a great story line with great characters)

4. Final Fantasy VII (Sephiroth owns all villians, even Aizen!)

but first off i'd like to mention the fact that while there's no quesiton that the 2d platforming mario games were good, there's always been a place in my heart for the very first Prince of Persia game. it was truly one of the better platform games to play apart for when mario came out. now it turns that 360 owners are going to be lucky sons-of-bitches.

the graphical prowess of the 360 is going to reinvigorate a game that i think is considered one of the best games of all time.

I know, i know, WW2 games are a bit old. But you should check this one out. You can literally land anywhere on the battefield. and the entire game changes depending on ur landing spot.

like if u land on the roof and you have a sniper, you can snipe. But you can land in a back-alley and go behind and ambush nazis. or you could land in the designated area for multiple health packs, ammo and more friendlies.

Don't know if its the best, but it seriously looks like its gonna be one of the best WW2 games out there.

(oh, and if u didn't know: Call of Duty 4, isn't WW2 anymore. its gonna be a modern warfare shooter.)

Baldur's Gate II, it's in a league of it's own.

I've played loads of awesome games (including many of those mentioned here) and none of them even come close. It's quite simply the ULTIMATE rpg experience. The only thing I can think to criticize is the game has a fairly slow and boring beginning, when you have to escape from a wizard's lab (it's dull and takes about an hour and a half). The rest rocks though.

The Gameboy Advance Game Golden Sun was surprisingly good (not a patch on BG II of course), even though I don't usually go in for Final Fantasy-esque games.

Tropico was a cool game as well. Be a dictator was great fun :D. It had some irritating flaws though.

Heheheh... I'm playing through xii right now and I have to agree. VII and VIII were the best ones for the series by far. X is a close third. I really don't like XII too much.. especially the battle system. The story is alright, I guess but so far I'm really not too impressed especially because with the upgrade system you can essentially make everyone have the same powers. But I guess its alright overall.
