BLEACH
SIDE STORY CHRONICLE
By
Robert Hayes
We have no form, therefore we fear it.
And because we are formless, we revere it.
Thus we are slain.
A pale, crescent moon hung over Karakura Town as the boy ran for his life. The chain dangling from his chest clanked as he ran through the park, breath coming in labored gasps. Behind him, he heard the heavy footfalls of the thing that was chasing him. The boy turned left with a jerk and kept running
Stopping by a tree to regain his breath (he actually wasn’t breathing he just though that he could.) he listened for the sound of his pursuer. A shriek split the night, a loud, piercing, mournful ululation. The boy glanced around him in fear, trying to find the direction of the roar. A twig snapped to the right and the boy took off in the opposite direction with a cry. He ran faster than he ever had before, faster than the thing that followed him he hoped. There were lights ahead. If he could reach the safety of civilization, the thing might not follow him. Without warning he was struck from behind, tumbling to a stop only a few feet away from the barrier of trees that separated the park from the roads on the other side.
“Caught you,” hissed a voice.
The boy rolled over, the chain affixed to his chest clinking. His pursuer stood before him, fifteen feet tall, a horrible gangling creature with a fearsome bone-white mask for a face. Its fingers were adorned with tearing claws, its feet with sharp talons. The mask had razor-edged spikes for teeth but when the mouth opened you could dimly see a pair of normal looking jaws behind the mask.
“Finally caught you again,” growled the monster, “you’ll make a tasty snack at least. I smell sweeter souls on the wind tonight.”
The monster reached down for the boy. He tried to get up and ran but the sight of the monster’s mask had frozen him with fear. The giant clawed hand had nearly grasped him when there was a mighty shout and flash of red light.
“Destruction Art 31! Shakkaho!!”
The monster recoiled with another ear-piercing shriek. Where its arm had been seconds before was now a smoking crater.
“Oy! You hollow! Didn’t anyone tell you to pick on people your own size?” asked a brash voice.
The boy turned around to see that a number of people had stepped out from behind the trees. There were six of them, four boys and two girls. Two them, the boy with bright orange hair and the smaller girl with black hair were dressed in black robes that made them look like Samurai warriors. The second boy was also dressed in black but it was a black karate outfit and had strange metal bracers worn on his forearms. The tallest boy was dressed in a white t-shirt and jeans. The last of the boys was wearing a white dress shirt and grey slacks. The other girl had long orange-brown hair and wore a pink t-shirt with jeans. The boy started in fright as he saw that the orange-haired boy was pointing a giant sword at the monster that resembled a cleaver more than anything else and lacked guard or a true hilt.
“I think you scared him speechless Ichigo,” said the karate kid to the orange haired boy, drawing a more normal katana from a sheath on his left side.
The monster stared at the unusual group for a moment then let out another roar.
“You are the souls I smelled! I’ll eat you first Shinigami and have that little kid for afters!” it howled.
“I don’t think so,” said Ichigo, “GETSUGA TENSHOU!” A crescent of blinding blue energy streaked way from Ichigo’s sword as he swung it at the hollow. It barely dodged the blast and watched in horror as it hit a tree, instantly annihilating it.
“Go for it!” yelled Ichigo. The hollow turned again to see the teenagers charging at it. But there were only five there, where was the sixth?
“Up here ugly!” came the voice of the black-dressed karate kid from above. The hollow glanced up to see his opponent barreling down towards him, sword raised over his head, the jewels on his bracers glowing blue-white like the blade of his sword. The hollow dodged to the side as the warrior landed, digging out a deep furrow in the ground with his strike. But that was a mistake as he was now facing the tall boy and the preppy looking one with glasses. With a roar the tall one threw his fist towards the hollow. There was a flash and another blast of energy was rocketing towards him. He dodged away from that one but then the preppy boys hands were glowing, energy forming a glowing bow shape in the air. With a strange ringing sound, the glasses boy began firing energy arrows at the hollow. Like Robin Hood of old, every single arrow found its mark. The hollow collapsed on his side just in time to see the pair of girls now charging at him.
“Destruction Art 33! Soukatsui!” screamed the shorter girl.
“Tsubaki! Koten Zanshun, I reject!” yelled the other girl.
A blast of blue-white lightning and ball of orange light both flew directly at the hollow. He tried desperately to get out of the way but only succeeded in taking glancing blows. The maneuver also brought him face to face with the one called Ichigo.
With a mighty yell Ichigo brought his blade down, cleaving the hollow’s mask in two. The hollow let out a shriek that was abruptly cut off and then literally dissolved into nothingness.
Ichigo slipped his sword onto his back and turned towards the boy. The boy immediately began backing off, trying to stand up to run away.
“Relax kid, we aint gonna hurt you.” said Ichigo.
“Who are you?” the boy asked with equal amounts of awe and fear in his voice.
“Us?” Ichigo looked around at his comrades, grinning. “We’re on your side kid. We’re here to help. And its time you went to Soul Society.”
“Soul Society? What’s that?” asked the boy nervously.
“You’re about to find out,” said Ichigo as he placed the bottom of his sword’s handle on the boy’s forehead. When he pulled it away, there was a kanji symbol glowing on the boy’s forehead. Light began to pool around the boy’s form as he began to sink away into the light.
“Am I going to heaven?”
“Yeah. Have fun kid,” said Ichigo, smiling.
“You’ll like it there in Soul Society, I promise,” said the black-haired girl.
The light vanished leaving the park in the dark of night again, casting the teens back into shadow.
“Aah! That was just what I needed on a Saturday night,” said Kenji, the one in the karate outfit, “A good hollow hunt!”
“Could it be that you’re actually trying to avoid studying for that test on Monday?” said Uryuu Ishida, pushing his glasses up his nose.
“What? No way dude!” responded Kenji.
“Rukia,” said Ichigo, addressing the black-haired girl, “That’s it for tonight right?”
Rukia was checking her cell phone, glanced at Ichigo, annoyed, then slapped it shut.
“There is no more activity. We have taken care of all the hollows.”
“All right, I gotta get back to my house or pops’ll wanna fight again. See you guys at school. Rukia, coming or not?” said Ichigo.
“See you later Kurosaki-kun!” said Orihime, the girl with the long hair.
“Yeah I’d better get going too.” Said Kenji, “Chad, Ishida, see ya.”
Ishida and Sado “Chad” Yasutora, The tall one, said their goodbyes as well and left with Orihime in tow.
What Ichigo and the others had not noticed, was that, on a rooftop some yards away, a tall man in a black trench coat and black fedora, carrying a strange wooden staff, had watched the entire incident. The man smirked, then walked away.
