In this machinary world, is there any place to books? Or do we have to go on with computers?

An interesting question. I beleive there is a need for books.
Ask yourself, reading a harry potter book (just a random series, it could be any book really) on your computer screen and reading it in your quiet study. Would those two choices not give you a different atmosphere?
Reading a book takes you into a world you create from the descriptionsof the author.
Would it give you the same feeling if u were reading it on you monitor as it would reading it from book? with pop ups, and AIM windows popping up in the middle of the climax of your story?

It seem that I have been misunderstood. I didn't ask about reading story on a computer/book, I asked about computer games VS books. But I personnaly prefer reading it on books, instead of on a monitor.

Well I do generally prefer books. While a game can keep me entertained for a little while a book takes me into it's world and I can almost feel what the charachters are feeling and it stimulates my brain on a whole different level. while I can only sit for amybe an hours with a good computer game (ok there are exceptions) I can sit for 8-9 hours with most books...

Heh agreed, also a book has a much nicer feeling to it really... I mean what feels best, hold a book flipping thourg the pages or sitting with your noose glued to your monitor scrolling through text from the net?

lol, i think there is still need for books, i dont about anyone else but i much prefer to read from a book rather than form a computer screen, gives your eyes something different to focus on, plus its more relaxing to go read your book on the beach rather than sitting there on the beach trying to get all the sand out your laptop so you can finnish chapter 12 :P

Both books and computers have their pros and their cons. Books are portable, for one. Yeah, you can get portable computers, but you know what I mean. You can take books with you anywhere. A good story is a great way to pass time, too.
But then theres computers. Computers are infinitely more useful, unfortunately. Not only can you get the same stories on the computer that you'd pay money to get on paper for free, you can also look up things that aren't in books, interact with other people, leave your own legacy, play videogames, and practically do whatever the hell you want.
As far as usefulness goes, I'd go with computers of course.
As far as entertainment goes.. ? I'm not so sure.

if you all guys (exept sgb) prefer books, what are you doing in a forum? you said every pro of books- but you still write in a computer. maybe you should rethink about your opinions about books?
sgb126, u're right about the usefulness, of course, but didn't you ever read a book which interested you more than a computer game?

I did,... Just try writing a book, it'll keep you years interested, and you still won't know how to end your story.
I used to read a lot. Though I haven't read anything lately. (So little time)
I should prefer computers because it's my job...
But I guess I really don't know which one I like more. PC's or books.
I guess I'd like RPG's most. Because it's a story in the first place. But then again, at the pieces you get stuck (however little that may happen to me) you'd wish you could just read all of this in a book.
I think I like them both, as long as the storyline is good.
(I'm on a forum because it has a ability a book doesn't have. Meeting people)

Just because i prefer a book over a computer doesnt mean i cant write on a computer.
example: i love chocolate but i still eat vanilla ice cream

I'll definitely have to say books. I have tried reading an entire chinese kungfu novel online, and damn that hurt my eyes. But i can do paper book reading marathons, which is probably equally as bad for my eyes....
Books have this really serene feel to them, while computer screens just feel very cold and harsh even though i LOVE my lcd screen for watching anime on.
I mean the other way this thread can be put is manga or anime? lol

I agree with that because u cant lay down on the couch with your LCD screen

I would say books are better for reading because your eyes don't as sore and you won't get that annoying hum of fans whirling up a strom in your case

my computer sounds like a jet when you turn it on.. but only on the hottest days is there warm air comming out of the outlet fans...
as for books... there will always be a place for them... ever tried reading something on a laptop just to get a battery low warning and it turn off on you?

I also like both I don't prefer one or the other. I pull marathons in both, but I easily can spend an equal amount of time usually three to four hours, and usually in the wee hours of the morninig, though i can do them at other times during the day. However for a real challenge try doing both at the same time that is incredibly hard to pull off though I did it once (okay so the computer game was a turn based strategy game, but I still did it darn it.). As far as immersing yourself in either you can do so easily in both. Then again I usually play hopelessly complex and realistic computer games that I easily can be absorbed into a world that has potential. Well anyone here ever hear about Master of Orion 3 or stronhold, because I usually play these as well as many video RPG games, and when you play any RPG whether pen and paper (i don't expect anayone to know about this disappearing discipline.) or video you begin to connect with the character and group you play in think of RPG's as books that you can play through, and eventually be able to interact with. I kid you not video gaming is headed toward more and more immersive environments. So I believe I will continue to like both Books and Computer/video games. :redbiggri :biggthump ;)

i'm gonna be a librarian. I like books, but we need computers to find the books. And most of the engineers still need books to make computers.
I still think books are superior technology in terms of resisting entropy, energy usage, durability, ease on eyes, and resistance to spyware and viruses.

I prefer books. Simply because I can read book in any position I like but with computer I need to sit up straight. Even with laptop, it's impossible to lie on ur back and use laptop at the same time. Plus, I always sleep with my books, but I can't sleep with computer still on.

Books are better, but computer is more addicting... the computer can "wow" much more easily, because of pics and graphics... same is true for TV

I'm a book guy... For some reason I don't enjoy reading on the computer as I do when I read off a book... Besides I can't really concentrate when reading from a computer but reading from a book you feel you're close to the studying mood so I guess that makes it better...

I would say that a person should have both! Computers are cool and they provide lots of stuff that books cant but books bring you more knowledge and I'd rather feel it processing into my head and getting the whole story then reading bits and pieces on the net. You cant survive on one or the other so you need both! :redbiggri

Has anyone mentioned E-Books or w/e they are called. Lol, the cheap way to technically be using both, no? (By cheap I mean cheating out of the debate sorta) But hm... It depends, but generally I myself stick with computers. But we wouldn't have much need for them without books. So I agree that we need both. I know I do most the time.

I'll never buy anything over the internet, plus having the feel of a book in your hands is a great one well if you're enjoying it.

well I love both. when I was younger I read books all the time. But now it's different.I'm on my computer 24/7. I like to read a book but I just can't stay away from the computer >__<
I can't read things on the computer. I tried to read a 20 pages word document. but with 10 my eyes hurted a lot! so i guess I have to read in books like normal people do ;)

Well when massive information is concerned, computers are very important. Think about archives upon archives of a thousand journals. Going through page by page, book by book to search for information is just CRAZY. With computers, we just use 'search'.
But where enjoyment is concerned, books own big time. Feel the crisp of paper on your fingers, feast your eyes on the beauty of colours ON paper. The effect of colours on paper is different from effect of colours on computers. They're just different in their own way, beautiful in their own way and one simply cannot substitute the other.
Annnddd.... just imagine spilling a drink over your book. You just dry it off!! But spilling a drink over your computer... you're done for big time

Definitely books. *waves "Books" banner*
But, then again, I'll probably hang myself if my computer decided to spontaneously combust.
I really don't think you can compare the two, per se. Like, computers can be used for so many more things than books, but books are, well, they're BOOKS! (what's not to like? :])
Enjoyment/Studying = Books
Everything Else = Probably the computer, I'm sorry to say.
