From the culprit's side, it's projection. A crime has been committed, bus as they can't accept the blame themselves, it has to be the victim's fault. The deserve it, because they were acting this or that way, because they really secretly wanted it or whatever.

I believe that in general, no one "deserves" to be target of any crime. A guy who leaves his car unlocked doesn't deserve to get it stolen, but in a case like this, it's quite easy for anyone to laugh at his stupidity. Overall, if we think people were acting stupid, it's a lot harder to be empathetic and considerate.

Stupidity, however, isn't a crime, nor it should be. No matter what the victim did, no matter how she (or he) dressed or acted, the culprit is to blame.

So yes, I can understand why someone would say that the victim just got what was coming for them - I still think they are wrong, though.

When I was younger (about 6 years old if I'm correct), my cousins use to babysit me when my parents went to work in the evening. It was fine and dandy until the oldest brother (there were 3) made a deal with me that if I sat on his lap everyday, he'll buy me a video game of my choice at the end of each month. Being the naive little girl that I was, I agreed.

Its a sick perversion because most times the rapist feels inadequate or insufficient in his own life that usually he will resort to rape to affirm that he isn't weak at all. Also, majority of cases of rape aren't by random deranged, perverted strangers but by acquaintances or even friends of the victim. In the US, the most prevalent type of rape is known as the Date Rape. Usually the rapist will get the victim drunk or slip her a date rape drug. Or sometimes, one party will read signals and will get the wrong idea about where the a situation is headed and force himself on the woman. Its a sad thing but things like this happens all the time. I was on the way home from martial arts training one time (my mums idea so that I could defend myself), and a summers evening when it wasn't even dark, and a gang closed up on me. Luckily they didn't get any further because one of my friends/leaders assistant from the training had seen what was about to happen and came to my help. I got a blow to my head during that fight (because the leader wanted to have some "fun" when he was "done" with the karate kid) and woke up 5 mins later when my friend was carrying me to the buss. He didn't leave until I was safe on the bus...
I am so grateful that he was there at that moment....

But then when I got home I was welcomed by my boyfriend, and cried out when he hugged me. I was sore all over my body (I even bled from a knife wound). Of course he wondered what happened and I told him.
That was the worst misstake of my life... He got so turned on by that incident and that fact that I was hurt so he raped me. Hit me many times and raped me twice that night....

Why? I don't know. Maybe it was my fault for telling him, but a normal person should not be TURNED ON by that! At least not in my opinion, sorry if I offend someone now.
This was 3 years ago I haven't meet him since that night. but he wrote in a letter that he didn't get what he did wrong in our relationship...! and no. He was not on some drugs or alcohol...

When people saying that someone deserved it, they are usually talking about someone who has been an asshole all their life. Mistreating people, calling them names, teasing, etc. Some people deserve a punishment for bad behaviour. no. I've realized that I could have done to hinder it, not really. I guess it would have happened sooner or later, maybe even to another girlfriend of his which would have taken it very badly and might even have killed herself. I was on the way home from martial arts training one time (my mums idea so that I could defend myself), and a summers evening when it wasn't even dark, and a gang closed up on me. I am so grateful that he was there at that moment....
