I have always wondered what those markings on Renji's face were. I thought it was like some face paint but then I noticed something. In episode 31 or 32 i think, when they show the story of Renji and Rukia as youngsters, I see that as he gradually gets older the markings increase. What are they? Someone let me know plz.
He gets a new tat everytime he achieves something in life. When he finally bangs Rukia he's guna turn his entire body into a tat.

that was tattoo,obviously he do that eveytime his friend die i suppose,he keep on adding when his 3 friend die(go check epi err 20-5o the answer is there lol) probably..

It's just a symbol of achievement for him. If you notice, there was a young shinigami in the 6th division.(Or was it the 11th...Its been so long since the days of saving Rukia.) But yea. He also looked up to Renji and had tattoos on himself too.
They're circuit traces. Renji is obviously a cyborg. :D

Why not? The Bureau of Technological Development seems pretty advanced. I suppose they're more into genetic manipulation. Maybe he's half zebra. That would explain the African animal-themed zanpakutō.

the logical one: he gets one everytime he gets more connected to zabimaru. I think it represents the tie to his shikai
the illogical one: He secretly works for the hollows and renjis tattoos r the only parts of his mask that he cant get off. So he makes it a fashion statement

Well a theory of mine is that he received the tattos or the wierd eyebrows when he achieved Zabimaru :/

My theory is that his hair started falling out REALLY early (have you noticed his receeding hairline? It's the grosest part about any bleach character IMO) and that he started the eyebrow tattoos to detract from people noticing that. Then when people began to notice the tattoos... he had more done to detract from people noticing the first tatoos. It was Ikkaku's idea.
That, or they're meant to be camoflage marks.

He's gonna use Zabimaru's Bankai body to put more tatts. A personal theory of mine is that he adds a tattoo everytime he does someting sensationally stupid.

It all started when Rukia made an innocent comment about liking guys with tattoo's. So he got a couple, then a couple, then a couple hoping she would notice.
Of course all his work has only netted him a 'you have weird eyebrows' from her hence his abrasive attitude. At least thats my pervy renji conclusion.
