All that stuff the UK media describes as the best "indie" bands around.

i.e. The Kooks, Razorlight, The Kaiser Chiefs, The Fratellis, The View etc.

Fall Out Boy are awful. Like properly awful. As are Panic! At The Disoc. I don't hate My Chemical Romance (although I don't like their music at all) because they're at least trying to be good whilst those other two are purposefully trying to make bad music. I am bloody sure of it.

Weezer's latest album, The Red Hot Chilii Peppers latest album.

Avril Lavigne

Blink 182, The Offspring, Green Day, +44, Bowling for Soup, Sum 41

Just about all the rap and RnB that gets played on the radio (special mention to 50 Cent, Fergie and The Black Eyed Peas).

Nickelback

James Blunt, KT Tunstall, Paolo Nutini

The Killers

Scottish teuchdary (traditional) bands such as Face the West, Capercaillie and The Vatersay Boys.

Most j-pop I've heard.

edit:

Oh, oh, oh!

Those crappy manufactured pop bands.

Boyzone, Take That, Westlife, The Spice Girls, Girls Aloud

The winners of those 'talent' finding reality tv shows like Pop Idol.

Busted and the three splinter Busted groups (Fight Star, the guy who went solo (Owen?) and Son of Dork).

Those crappy metal bands which seem to be popping up everywhere.

I agree with the above, gang/sex-related rapping sucks, but there are some forms of rap that I don't mind.

I forgot to mention most dance music.

Especially the ones which follow this formula:

Get a repetitive beat + a video full of bikini clad women running, doing work, etc. = 'good' music

People that love to use chipmonks in their songs (yeah, I'm looking at you, Akon!).

I think it's rather funny. Because the songs are all about how tough life is in the ghetto and dangerous and sh** and I'm just like STFU, you're a rapper with three platinum records, you live the most white bred life on that side of LA. You don't have to worry about being shot except for the dumb drama you start with other rappers, other than that you got a bunch of bodygaurds and a security system on your mansion protecting you.

The Killers came later in the thought process and I'd draw a distinction because whilst I said what they [the media] describe as the best indie I really should have said those "indie" bands that follow the same formula as The Libertines (who NME slavoured all over and basically said they were the best thing EVARR!!! when really they were decent to good) and all have similiar sounds. Whilst The Killers are touted as the best out there I think they definately have a different sound (compare Mr. Brightside, Indie Rock and Roll and Bones to I Predict a Riot, Na na na na na and Golden Touch).

So, yeah. It was a labelling error on my part.

Mainstream hip hop, most mainstream pop, mainstream post-hardcore, all metal, and visual kei are all pretty lame.
Metal because it seems to be just a fight of who can pluck strings fastest.
Visual kei because the genre itself is more focused on the appearance than the music, and both are horrible.
Mainstream anything because they sacrifice content for rhyme and money.

Just because band A influenced band B it does not mean that band A is better. Along the same lines I can love genre A which drew heavy inlfuences from genre C whilst disliking genre C. Of course I could still see genre B as the best one out of the three.

Also I fail to see how old school (I hate that phrase so, so much) metal directly led to all the pop, rap and R&B that's being made today. Of course that's my own failing. I'm sure you have a magical graph - for we all love graphs! - to show me how it does.

You should also remember that just about everyone is talking in generalities here. It's the 'lamest' (hate that word as well) music to that person and whilst classical is good just because it influenced people ('cause we all know it goes Bach > Buddy Holly > 50 Cent) it does not mean that you have to like it. Heck, you could hate it (although that'd be a travisty since classical music is lovely).

It's just common sense really, one genre influenced the other, so the one it is influenced of is better, take for example the world of graphic design, one designer sees a piece he really likes so he copied the effects used, though it turned out not as good as the original, same thing with music in my opinion.

No, the thing is it is not common sense. It is a load of rubbish.

By your logic Buddy Holly is better than every single metal band you enjoy/like/love. No matter what.

See? It's crap.

Take for example the world of graphic design, one designer sees a piece he really likes so he copied the effects used and it turned out to be better than original. This happens a lot of the time in music. Of course a lot of the time it doesn't happen.

Even then there's things which weren't influenced by many of the things which came before. Joanna Newsom was not influeced by Black Sabbath.

Yeah but that wasn't the point you were trying to make. You were stating that someone who was influenced by something can never better the thing which influenced him/her which is a load of rubbish. Also there was your claim that music today has some direct link to 'old school' metal. Which is also a load of rubbish.

Of course I may be wrong on in that area. Please, tell me how Black Sabbath has led to The Pipettes, The Shins, Wilco, Modest Mouse, 50 Cent, Eminem, DJ Shadow, Joanna Newsom, Bonnie Prince Billie, Radiohead, Coldplay, Keane, Snow Patrol, Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura, Devendra Banhart, Beck, Willy Mason, James Blunt, KT Tunstall, The Black Eyed Peas, Avril Lavigne, Bjork, Girls Aloud, Westlife, Take That, Robbie Williams and Weezer 'cause I'd really like to know.

New technology paved the way to new styles of music, for example Micheal Jackson uses mostly beats but in the song "Beat It" there is a solo by Van Halen at the end, soon the guitars became less and less used than the new technology, but if you listen closely you can still here Metal origins on some of the new songs...

I decided to introduce lots of modern music, but hey, let's do it by you specifically stated.

First up, pop!

Please tell me how Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura, The Pipettes, The Shins, Girls Aloud, Westlife, Take That, Boyzone and The Boy Least Likely To (all modern bands who perform some type of pop music) would not be here if it was not for old school metal.

Beyond an extremely vague story about guitars not really being used as much (although, for example, The Shins mainly use guitars (bass, acoustic, electric)), Van Halen once doing a solo at the end of a single Michael Jackson song and if you closely listen you can hear metal origins ('...' at the end of that indeed) I don't think you can.

There isn't really a lame music since there could be that one song to redeem that genre. For example, I think country is generally lame but there were certain songs that redeemed its quality.

But if you ask me, I think anything by Rhianna is lame. Especially that umbrella song. It seemed like she couldn't think of any other words to put so she added in the syllables, "Eh-Eh-Ella Ella Ella -eh -eh" She sounds like a retard singing that song.

I don't really like some forms of rap because the beats always seem to be overused and recycled.

That and I don't really like how they try to boost their rep by insulting other rappers in their songs. And frankly, I don't about how many Ho's they have....

I find "diss" songs annoying. Its about about a rapper hating another rapper and they rap sometime bad or either make up something about them... urgh its so annoying, I don't call that entertainment at all, I call that being immature and being hostile. Your not going to make friends like that.

there's no such thing as lame music. bad music comes from bad musicians, not from determined genres. no matter how many bad artists a certain genre may have, if you look hard enough you can find something good.
not true... Polka is lame... period. If you look hard enough, you'll end up wasting your time, but most of what you said is true.

Polka folks, how could we overlook this -_-
