Why's Ichigo's soul slayer so damn big??

Isn't the soul slayer's size supposed to depend on the amount of energy the user has, but then why??? if he has such a big soul slayer where's all the energy, why can't he beat the captains easily???

Agreed. Unlike the captains, Ichigo was never really schooled in how to control his power. It is like the equivalent of giving someone the sharpest and strongest blade in the world... but this person has no clue how to wield a sword. As such, while the blade has the ability to be an extremely powerful weapon, the user lacks the skill to use it to the best of its ability.

In essence, Ichigo is much stronger than any of the captains. Since he can not control his spirit force, he is at an incredibly large disadvantage. Should Ichigo be trained like any other Shinigami, he could possibly be the strongest Shinigami to have ever existed.

its a bit like einstein as a baby tbh, he was super smart, but didnt have the right tools to use his smarts yet. As he grew he aquired the skills needed, reading, writing etc until he was the brainiest guy ever.

Ichigo is like that, his sword is hollow at the start, he doesnt even know how to put his energy into his sword when he is fighting bayaka (whatever his silly name is), eventually he will learn how to use his power to maximum effect. Albeit a bit faster than einstein learing all thsoe things :P

i think there was one ep where it said ichigo also didnt have enough experience or something and that if he did he would be way stronger then he is now... and he didnt even go through the shinigami academy so he was never trained to control his spirit power or how to use kidou... right now he is still learning about controlling his spirit power like how to peform those massive attacks like when he was training with urahara or fighting with renji

amount of energy issit the only factor for fighting. there is still speed, sword type, sword fighting skills n technique, reaction, strength, confidence, endurance, stamina blah blah blah, etc, etc, etc

tbh, it tells you in epsidoe one what goes into a soul slayer and makes it huge, its right at the end when ichigo fights that hollow after rukia gives him her powers

If you learn to control your own spiritual energy like all official shinigamis, then you should be able to lower the size of your zanpaku-to, shouldn't you ?
Like Urahara said, the density of energy in Ichigo's (first) zanpakuto was just high enough to create a sword easy to cut down like butter. That means you can have Zapuaku-to's with higher spiritual density, thus more energy for less size.

But, I have to agree that Ichigo has quite a lot of energy at his disposal.

i would equate this whole soul slayer size thing with Naruto and the Kyuubi's powers. I mean no matter how much power you have, if you just sit there doing nothing about them, nothing would ever come of it hehe..

but i would have loved to say that the Soul Slayer is huge because Ichigo has a huge.... lol. You kno how they say size of cars and weapons are all very phallic lol.

hmm im not sure about that altok, other captains have a normal sized zanpakuto when they are powering up (before they release shi kai), when they are powering up their spirit power the size of the blade doesnt change at all.

He probably just has a huge pool of spirit power, the zanpakuto can sense this ever if ichigo cant actually use it yet and becomes huge to augument this

The only reason Ichigo's zanpakuto is huge is that he can't control his reiatsu. Captains can, don't they ?
Since their reiatsu don't leak, they should have absolutely no problem to keep their zanpakuto's shape. It's the spiritual density of the weapon that goes up. Not the weapon's size-

The BIG zabimaru is Renji's Shi Kai (first release), but the big zangetsu is Ichigo's zapuakuto sealed form.
Only sealed zanpakutos show their master's reiatsu by their size, as Shi Kai's are more condensed spirit forms. Otherwise, these could be a pain to carry around, couldn't they ?
I won't spoil either, since I drunk too much to make that clear for an anime watcher, lol

I'd say he has a big zanpaktou because he can't hide his spirtual energy. In the begging it was big because unlike other beggining shinigami's he already had a lot of spiratual force. When he fights he always fight with Zeggestu, they are basicly the same person.

Well the original blade Ichigo had, the one he had before meeting Byakuya., was only a lose form of energy. It wasent to any practical use since the energy wasent compressed at all.

There is Captains with more reiatsu than Ichigo. Zaraki equally matched Ichigo when Ichigo was giving all out in shikai mode while Zaraki was in seled mode.
That means Zarakis raw power by far exceedes Ichigoes even when he is in shi kai.

I think this is confusing some posters because both his shikai and asauchi form are big but i think the original topic was about his released soul slayer. Or maybe they didn't explain enough and they meant why if ichigo's original soul slayer was so big why isn't he beating the captains who have smaller soul slayers than he did.

Yes you are, Uruhara was speaking metophorically, nothing more. When he said it was a fluffy item he meant that ichico didn't harness zangestu and himself. Remember the same thing happened when he fought kenpatchi. The simplicty is that you have to harness the spirtual force. Logiccly Ichico had no idea how to do this before. If that wasn't his zanpaktou than why did he pull it out? Zengestu's exact words were " what are you waiting for? pull me out already!!!"

i think that was zangetsu's first form, just when ichigo did manage to listen to zangestu he unleashed so much power that he couldnt manage to seal it back into its first form again
