i myself am very confused with lcds... ive heard alot of different opinions on the refresh rates and ms from alot of different people and there all different and i intend to buy 2 lcd's for a dual set up on my new build and im a gamer and i dont want some cheap pos lcd but i cant afford some 600$$ one either so if anyone could help me decide what the specs should be, from someone who would know about them. what i've heard is that for gaming you should go 12-16ms with contrast ratio 600:1 or 700:1 i dont fully understand all dis shit cuhz ive never used lcd's before.. but if someone could help a bit =P also like the refresh rate around 55-75Hz is good for gaming i hear? i get mixed opinions from people in my networking class........ :eek13: hit me up at my email or pm orrrr say what u think by replying to this thread ^-^ Ty.

LCD's are overrated, I mean yea there nice and sharp but you know what, I got a 21 inch Hitachi Monitor that mother is nice...i get 1600x1200 on games with no problem and i can play at 100+mhz refresh rates AT THAT REZ!
my desktop is run at 1024 usually unless i feel like photoshop then its 1280 but at 1024 i get refresh of 200mhz, and 1280 at 140mhz its so sharp it hurts my eyes ! lol

i dont think they are overrated, they dont hurt your eyes like a crt, i used to get headaches from crt screens but now i could go on forever (and often do) just got myself a LG 19" beast! 12ms responce time
looking for a decent flatscreen for gaming just look for one thats -
16ms responce time or less
can support 75Mhz or more
and its all good :) also check the reviews out if your buying it online, that normally tells you how good a screen or anything is :)

The LCD are genrally better, but can be a real pain in the ass: you can't see anything on them when the lighting is wrong.
But CRT can give you cancer and all...
So refresh rates and stuff really doesn't matter much. (unless you want to go for that little bit more...)
As long as there is an image it works.
But as I said, generally LCD is better (for your health).

Last time I Checked, Dell had a really good one in terms of response time etc. for gaming. You want a LCD that does not do "Ghosting" which is really bad for gamers :(

heres the break down, if your on a budget get a CRT, very good for gaming, as for LCD, it depends what kind you get and usally its high in price. LCD are convient but some is not as clear as the CRT's

the key to getting a good lcd is to get a good brand. some brands stretch the truth about their specs. good brands are samsung, benq, LG, nec. specs to look out for are at least 16ms; lower is better tho anything below 16ms isn't really noticeable. contrast should be at least 450:1; the higher this number the better. as for viewing angle, pretty much any monitor from the brands i listed have good viewing angles.

Here's the deal with LCD's. If you want a good GOOD LCD go with one that has MAX of 16ms Response Time. For gaming 8 is probably recommended. Great LCD's are: Samsung 214T 930bf, Dell 1905FP 2005FP 2405FP, BenQFP91G+, Viewsonic VX924. If I think of any more I'll post again

CTR'S are used for gaming better because of theiri refresh rate...like what Sahiden said they hurt your eyes only because you leave them on 60 herz refresh rate....your suppose to (or should if you game) change it to at least 75 and if it isn't stable there than you probably have something very cheap. The reason why the LCD or TFT doesn't really hurt your eyes is because its tolerable to your eyes at 60 hertz and the default is set at 60 so you don't have to change the settings. 60 hertz isn't that great for your gaming experience if your playing FPS games and things that show a lot of frame rate... unless your getting a good LCD then it won't really go above 60 hertz stabally...thats why its very contraversal you only see gamers with a CRT monitor... for example if you play CS you'd have to turn Vertical Sync off to attain 100 FPS or around there...if you buff or well just change the herts to about 75 than it will stay at 75 FPS with having the veritcal sync on... simple as that... the fact that LCDs have tolerable refresh rates but is a low 60 and that the CRT hurts your eyes unless you change it higher, the higher the refresh rate most of the time the better.

I am not really sure, I think my Dell 2005 LCD has a response time of about 8ms, Think so. Anyway, The screen is very smooth when I play games, BF2 or CSS, very smooth.

About the only good thing with LCDs and Gaming is that they are a lot easier to move around when it comes down to going to a LAN party.
If you are going to be getting a LCD, the lower the MS, the better.
The other problem with LCD is that you are very limited on screen res. And this can be a problem with some games where I need my computer screen realestate. Eg. RTS and some MMORPGs and just about any MS Excel Spread Sheet.

Really, there isn't much of a difference to me. LCD is much better for taking to LANs, but only my cheap one. Because at LANs, one of my friends normally gets sleep deprived and then starts acting weird. And then holes start to open up in things. Like a basement wall.
LCDs will give you a better picture quality, but it's not really necessary. CRTs are just way too annoying to haul around for me whenever I go somewhere.
It only matters if the game you are playing has fast motions. This is where CRT shines over LCD unless your LCD is godly :)

I have an 17" Acer Flatscreen which im pretty damn sure is LCD. It dont hurt my eyes and its reso is always on 1280x1024. It doesnt hurt my eyes or give me headaches and games appear amazing on it with no flaws.
They are not "over rated", because pretty soon Flat Screens are going to FULLY replace the old style bulky moniters, most all new computer packages you can purchase come with a flatscreen.
