From the 6th division, a new challenge

We, the 6th division, issue a writing challenge to the other Gotei divisions. This contest will be in the form of a free-form RPG, setting and guidlines to be worked out among the designated moderators. Due to people having lives outside of CB, we will accept one division for this challenge. In order to stay active and avoid forfeiture, participants must post a minimum of once per week. No one-line posts will be acceptable. To ensure fairness, the game will be moderated by 2 members of the 6th division (myself being one of them), and 2 members of the challenging division. the challenging division may PM me the details of who has been chosen from among their ranks to moderate this with us. If you have any questions, post them here. That is all.

I have to deny the first part. Although we often disagree and provoke each other, I REALLY DO look forward to that. It's not out of hate, although my best works IRL as a writer were fueled by fate. Perhaps I'll wander around in Bleach battle section with Seff before writing my part. :D

After discussing this with .Sys last night, here are a few more details...

the challenge will be to take a starting line and an ending line provided to you by the mods, and write a story between them. Essentially, every story for this challenge will start and end with the same two lines. The stories will be a minimum of 1000 words, and a maximum of 1300.

Now, as for the theme... to ensure that everyone is writing at their creative best, the theme will be chosen by the individual writer. You can write a medieval fantasy, a futuristic thriller, or anything in between.

Now, we need two more mods selected from the 9th division. Captain, just PM me the members chosen for this, if you please.

Once all the mods have been chosen, the next thing we will need to work out will be the timing of the challenge. How long will it run, etc.

Anyway, that's the latest on this challenge. Will post more once we have all the mods in place.

Ok, another point of clarification... There are actually two distinct challenges being discussed here...

1) the writing challenge, between the 6th and 9th divisions

2) the RPG challenge

To my knowledge, both are going to be moderated by the same 2 members of each division, Myself and .System for 6th. As far as setting and all, we will need to consult with the other mods to make sure that the rules for both are fair.

Here is what I percieve to be the main points to agree on:

What exactly do you mean by starting line and ending line. Does that mean, for eg, one of the divs starts a story with 'Once upon a time' and the other ends it with 'and they lived happily ever after'?

As for the rpg, in case you want to use the dice or whatever, let me know how that works and how exactly you 'roll' a dice online >_<

Eva, for the starting and ending lines, basically what we're looking at is all particpants of the writing challenge being given a common starting line adn an ending line (e.g. "It was a dark and stormy night..."/"... And they lived happily ever after") and then everyone writes a story from there. Each story will start and end with the same two lines. Now, for the RPG challenge, this is a TOTALLY seperate challenge than the writing challenge. .System and I agree that for RPG n00bs like yourself, we need to go with a more free-form RPG. This generally consists of a few guidelines concerning character powers, and limits, but nothing as precise as "roll 3d6 to determine damage". this will allow everyone to focus on the RPG story and writing, not dice rolls and modifiers. One thing about RPGing in this form is, instead of just writing what your character does, you can write what your character TRIES to do... For instance, in a story, you would write:

Dalathor swung his Elven blade with all his strength. The steel of the blade met the metal armor at the neck of his gruesome Orc opponent, and sliced through it like it was a loaf of waybread, neeatly removing the Orc's filthy head.

Whereas in an RPG setting, it would read more like this:

Trusting fully in his Elven blade, Dalathor swung it with all his might, aiming for the neck of his Orc foe, intending to cleave the filthy head from the body.

See the difference? granted, not every action has to be described in such flowery language, but you should be able to adapt to the RPG-style of posting pretty easily.

RPG Challenge, First Stage -- Character Creation

Ok, after what I'm SURE has seemed like an interminable delay, I present the following for the particpants.

Challenge Background

It is the year 2073. Governments have toppled, the borders of nations and states have virtually vanished, and in the vacuum of power that was left, the entity known as the corporation has seized most of the power, growing in size until it was so large, a new name had to be given them... the MEGACORP. But all this doesn't really matter much to the regular people living in the shadows of the monolithic megacorp office buildings. Down here, you just do what you can to earn a living and survive. To some, that means having a respectable job, pulling an eight-five, and going home. But that wasn't for you either. No, you found your place in one of the many gangs that fight for territory and status in the city sprawl, unnoticed by the megacorps. Your gang has been expanding for some time now, in small steps, granted, but you’ve watched as the membership has grown, your reputation has grown, and your turf has gotten bigger and bigger. until recently. It seems that a rival gang has decided that they have had enough of your growth, and want to do something about that. Three times in as many weeks, they've hit areas that you control, and have overwhelmed the guards that you had in place, killing them, or capturing them, and putting them through who know what kind of hideous tortures to try and break their loyalty, and pump them for inside information on your gangs' operation. Knowing what you know about this gang, you know that there's no way in Hades that they could pull this stuff on their own, so you figure that they got some pretty heavy muscle backing them up. Well, two can play at that game. You have a few contacts of your own that owe you some favors... Looks like it might be time to call in some. It's time for an all-out turf war, and you're going to do everything you can to give your people the edge.


So, now you have an idea about the theme... Now, let's talk about your character...

Characters can be one of two factions:

Golden Dragon Clan (Yakuza)

Corrosion Of Conformity (Anarchist)

Once you have determined which faction you wish to belong to, you then need to determine your character's stats adn class.

Character Stats

In this challenge, characters will have 4 basic stats:

STRENGTH (STR)

AGILITY (AGI)

INTELLIGENCE (INT)

WILLPOWER (WILL)

Each stat starts with a value of 10. You then have 80 points to distribute among those 4 as you see fit, or as your chosen class dictates. It costs 5 points to raise STR and AGI by 1, and 10 points to raise INT and WILL by 1. Now, once you have your stats set, choose your class (note that you may have to adjust your stats depending on how you raised them and what class you choose).

Classes Available

There will be three classes available to each faction:

Yakuza
Street Samurai - A generally good overall fighter, with a good mix of close-range and longer range melee weapons. They get their name from their fascination with the old Bushido Code, and the fact that they carry a katana as well as other weaponry.

Primary Stat: STR 12


Hacker - The computer geeks of the 2070's, Hackers spend most of their time in the Matrix, the global computer system with neural interfaces. While they may not be very strong, the information they can get is invaluable, and they can alter all kinds of records, empty bank accounts, adn all kinds of other nasty things.

Primary Stat: INT 14


Dragon Warlord - These are your heavies. Dragon Warlords are Yakuza members who have volunteered to have themselves enhanved with cybernetics. Their right arm and shoulder have been replaced with a large cannon with the barrel shaped like the neck and head of a dragon, while their legs have been replaced with cybernetic ones, in order to handle all teh extra weight. The cannon can fire an electrical discharge, a blast of freezing energy, or an orange ball or super-heated plasma. In addition, they also have the benefit of having extra armor from teh waist to the shoulders, making them almost like a walking tank. However, this presents two glaring problems. First, due to the extra weight added by all the cybernetics, adn the very nature of the man/machine neural interface, they suffer greatly in speed and reaction time. The second problem is, with all the extra weight, if they are ever rendered incapable of standing upright, a small forklift will need to be brought out, or some other specialized equipment, due to the fact that it is almost impossible for even 4 grown men to move them.

Due to the nature of these characters, they have stats as follows:

STR: 20
AGI: 5
INT: 10
WILL: 15

For those playing the Golden Dragon Clan, there will be a max of 2 Street Samurai, 2 Hackers, adn 2 Dragon Warlords allowed. In other words, once two of your team choose the same character, the others have to choose a different one.


Corrosion of Conformity (Anarchist) classes:

Karmic Freedom Fighter - this character loves fighting to make their ideals a reality, and has a heightened sense of his/her own destiny. However, most of the time this sense of destiny revolves around finding a worthy adversary to pit their skills against. Sometimes, if they find an opponent that is particularly good, it might even cause them to abandon their idealistic fight for one more chance at a confrontation. They are very good with several forms of weaponry, but try to engage in an honorable battle whenever possible.

Primary Stat: STR 12


Technomancer - Technomancers are a lot like hackers except for one very noticeable difference. Where hackers need all kinds of high-tech gadgets to access teh Matrix, and do what they do, a Technomancer does NOT! Technomancers are people who are so in tune with technology that they have essentially transcended the need to have external computer equipment. They simply ARE computer equipment. Their ultimate purpose, however, is a lot like the hacker in that they have access to the vast stores of data on teh Matrix, adn can tweak it any way they see fit.

Primary Stat: INT 14


Sniper - These are the elite of the CoC members. So secretive are they, that only the head of CoC and maybe one other know their true identities. But that does NOT mean that they are useless... far from it. Everyone knows that one good sniper can be worth more than a whole division of men. There was an incident last year where CoC claimed responsibility for the killing of 35 members of the Haloweeners gang. Everyone just thought that thay overwhelmed them with more numbers. You know better. It was one sniper that did the job.

Primary Stats: STR 13, AGI 14


Now, for timing... Everyone will have a week to set up their character stats and chose a class. Once you have the numbers and class in place, choose other things like a name, age, etc. OH, also, the only race allowed in this challenge is HUMAN. That way you won't have to keep track of racial modifiers... makes it easier for everyone. Ummm, quick question guys...

You say there a week to set up your character... when does the challenge RP actually start because when I decided to join it was because I was around, and I'm leaving on the 13th for 2 weeks O.o

Can a Freedom Fighter/Street Samurai have a ranged weapon (for example, a short range gun mounted on the hand)?

Can we have energy attacks, or are we sticking with bullets only (depleted Uranium shells, steel, lead, what?)?

How human must our character looks? In other words, how human does a human has to be? Can I create a character that looks humanoid, is human, but he several inhuman characteristics? (such as, long arms, pale face, maybe even a third eye in the middle of the forehead?)

How many weapons can a character carry at once?

If a character has clawed hands (as in, a glove with let's say, sharpened steel "claws" on each finger), can those close be used for a "special" attack?

Can we have limited body manipulation? (for example, a character that has four weapons (two guns, claws on his hands (assuming we can have those "claws", see above question for what do I mean by "claws" if it's not a Warlord or something similar), and for example a special weapon that has a cool shape but basically fires bullets (or energy attacks if we are allowed), and one of the weapons is mounted on the hand for firing, but under normal circumstances the person has a regular hand, and when they need to fire the special weapon, it "appears" on their hand).

I'm posting those questions here because I want the answers to be known to everyone so that we won't have to go through too much trouble when setting up characters.

Those are very valid questions, Undy... I will tell you now that once you pick a character class, I will assign you a standard set of equipment, and allotment of skills, with a couple of surprises thrown in to make things interesting. As for specifics on those questions, it'll take me a little time, but I hopefully can have sometihng up for you on Monday next week at the lastest.

Ummm, quick question guys...

As soon as we (Sage, mostly) get all the character info from you guys, we'll start ASAP.

Dragging the planning period is the last thing we wanna do.

This does bring up a good point that needs to be addressed, Scorch... absences. Here's my take on it:

We all have lives outside of CB. If you as a player know in advance that you will be out of town/without internet access of any kind for more than, say, 3 days, and you let at least one mod know, we will certainly understand, and will probably just have another member of your team play your character for the rounds that you are gone.

If you are out of touch for more than 3 but less than 7 days, and no one knows where you are, or has heard from you, but the current round is not held up waiting for you to post, you will simply be dropped from the challenge, and a replacement named to take your place. If the current RPG round IS held up because everyone is waiting for you to post, your team will forfeit that round, and you will still be replaced.

I am envisionong each round to take a week to get through, then another 3 days for the mods to re-read it, debate on it, and ultimately decide a winner for that round. granted that may be adjusted depending on what happens in the round, ,and how long the mods need to determine a winner. but we'll figure that out once things get going...

does that sound fair to everyone? feel free to post other observations/suggestions that I might not have thougt of.

Thanks for posting this update, Scorch. I'll post more once we determine which member of the 6th will be replacing .System on our mod team. I had hoped to focus on any characters sent to me this week as far as adding details like skills & equipment, but now with this, I might have to hold off until we get this settled first... so yeah, the actual start of the challenge might be delayed for a little bit. hopefully not for very long, though.

Once I finish selecting a mod to assist me, and prodding the rest of my divison participants to get me their characters, we should start soon after. I hope to have the mod selected, adn the char sheets done by Monday next week.

Also, about the delays... I apologise. unfortunately, I have a full-time job outside of CB, so I have to devote a good portion of my attention to that, because, while posting here is great fun, it doesn't pay my bills. the weekends are usually busy with family activities adn other things, which doesn't leave me much time to get online, and the nights after work are hit-or-miss as well. Add to that the fact that I'm finishing out everyone's character by adding skills, equipment and other things, just to keep the concepts of the RPG simple, and it just takes time. I am confident that I will have everything about the characters finalized and back to their respective players this week. Alerane, if it's ok with you, I'll send your finished character to Mirage, and she can decide what to do with it. With any luck, we should be ready to start the challenge Monday of next week. does that sound acceptable to everyone? Let me know however you would like... IM, E-mail, PM, or post here. Thnaks.

I submitted my character today... Sorry for the delay guys. I caught a high fever at work and i was seriously unable to do anything useful for the past few days. :)

Umm, I know this is being rushed best it can, but this is a reminder, on the 13th I will not be gone for 2 weeks, and its looking like I will only have one day to roleplay my character. Will this cause bad marking for my division, because when I agreed to participate almost 3 weeks ago, I didn't know it would take until I left to set up. O.o"
