Oh please don't yell at me... I'm hoping that in my scanning through this forum I have the right to ask... because a lot of people here claim that they don't have it or that someone has told them that they don't have it....

I have a sort of similar situation... apparently I'm smart but have no common sense...?

So what exactly is common sense(also where the hell do I get some)?

Why is it that some intelligent people seem to have no common sense...? Are we just too busy thinking to take on the practical, simple, everyday tasks properly?

common sense is sometimes called "street smarts" whereas an intelligent person would be "book smart". does that help?

well yes... and no...

Does one obtain "street smarts" on the street? Because from what I understand even children have common sense...

Which means I suck.... oh in case you can't tell... I'm not particularly street smart either...

i do not have common sense, i have real sense. if real sense was the same as common sense, it would be much more common, and thus we wouldnt need to protect people from their own dumb selves.

the people i refer to are those who shoot full tanks of propane with their guns FOR FUN.
those that try surfing on their cars.
the list goes on, but i dont feel like going on.

I have no idea since I lived in America for like 5 years. Isn't it a book written by Thomans Paine (sp?) about why America needs to be free? I don't know I failed US history class. But I might know in Korean but American common sense I think I don't know...TOT

Its what stops you from doing somthing stupid.

"Should I stab myslef?" "No because it would hurt and there is a chance i will die"

Thats common sense, thinking of the conciquences before you take action

LOL... those people are commonly reffered to as "crazy"...

This is unfortunate... because I know some crazy people, and they aren't nearly as psycho as what you described...

In fact Common Sense was written by Thomas Paine and... wow we have a 4-way tie in the polls...

Just remember, REAL crazy people are gentle, sweet, sometimes cuddly, will try to use physics to explain souls to you and will help you with homework/schoolwork/Any work at all for fun...

Crazy people are my friends...Psychos on the other hand... are generally not...as I like my own safety a little too much to befriend them...

yes these psychotic ones also go by other names... such as:

- neurotic - yes they are... you'll know when you've seen one.

- dumb beyond all means - these are the people who make stupid lane changes and the like.

- thick headed - these are the close-minded fools who refuse to listen to reason based on their own ignorance, and whether they admit it or not they are afraid of what they dont know.

*seems i feel like ranting at this thread... hmmm... sorry anil*

Well ranting can be quite productive if it follows a train of thought and gets the point across to thick headed people...

street smarts aren't necessarily obtained on the streets. it's more or less just a term used to explain people who are always aware of their surroundings.

lol i would say i have not much common sense, but its slowly gettin better.

common sense is the type of logic you would use in your everyday life. i think thats simply putting it.

i think common sense, can tie into your confidence, and how much you either follow someone or are independent.

for instance if your used to someone telling you what to do, then you will defintely not have much common sense, since you would be totally dependant on someone else to provide your answers. however its quite the opposite with independant people since they love to explore things themselves and figure things.

so to get more common sense i would say you need to be more independant (and more open minded as well) (btw im not saying your not, im giving a general analysis)

I have a lot of common sense although I may not use it all of the time. Anyway, common sense is basically something that a person uses day to day. It's like the basic knowledge that everyone has although they may not use it all the time. Which is me in some cases.

I don't agree. It's not something you use. It's a rating on your acts and thoughts. You almost never rate em but if you do it's under influence of others. If you do something stupid it is that the rest of the society that thinks it's stupid that makes it stupid. The false is the truth if the truth is false for everyone else. That's pretty much what science is about. To proof if common sense is right or wrong. Comon sense is comon sense but it's not the same comon sense for everybody. It's just a rating from the society as I said.

Did you get that?

Ah yes, 500 years ago everyone knew the earth was flat, that was common sense back then. Now society has accepted that the earth is round, so you're right - common sense is dictated by what the majority rates is right.

hmm yeah i suppose it makes sense, because in your everday life your pretty much confronted by society anyway. lol i guess the answer is in the actual name of the thing: common sense. common being a society's view.

I'll give a good example of common sense... a lady walked up to a guy in this store with two bottles of perfume... and says "wat is the difference?" they were made by the same maker... the guy says "the difference is the fragrance..." she looks at the bottles then back at him and goes "so... what's the difference?" .... this lady is a good example of a lack of common sense.... so the guy.. being as patient and as annoyed as can be... opens the two bottles and lets the woman smell them "you tell me.." he said to her.... and that is why people with common sense can be picked from a crowd.... we generally tend to call these people dumb.... but even the smartest people lack common sense.... .... i hope my example made sense... (no pun intended)

some people lack common sense some people have common sense...Street smarts and common sense r the same thing by the way... There r 3 different categories u can classify people in..1) People with Common Sense, 2) Intelligent People and 3) People who have both. Needless to say if u r intelligent u have a good chance of having common sense. And if u have common sense then u have more street smarts then intelligence. Take me for example I have no intelligence!!
