Poetry Contest 03 Submission Thread

Only submissions should be posted in here for the Poetry Contest 03 (http://forums.bleachportal.net/showthread.php?t=46022) with the theme "Hero/Heroes."

Any questions, comments, etc. can go in the sign up thread (simply click "Poetry Contest 03" up above)

Editing of your poem is allowed until I close the thread.

Deadline: You have until next Friday, October 19th around 8:00pm GMT.

The Desert Requiems

Eight men walking
Nine altogether, only eight walk
No, march down that path
That sad, solemn path

The ceremony begins.

Eight men stop walking
The ninth, had already stopped long before
Now at rest
Peacefully, where no man may disturb him
Where his reason for fighting
Is laid over that cold and solemn box

Eternally.

Six bullets shot up at the air
The horn sounds, the flags fly high
The ninth man sinks,
Down to the cold and dead earth
Never to see the sky again.

Yet from the other end of the desert
Grieving faces crowd around dead bodies
Without fancy boxes, without flags over their heads
Only bloodied clothes that they died in
No salutes, only cries, wails of pain
Against the scorching desert winds

One, a boy, fifteen
A poor, young mother, a shattered face
He sought to fight, sneaked out to protect
Was there a chance against those metal birds?
Or those lumbering iron turtles roaming the sands?

Two sides
On what seems to be a never ending battle
"You are my enemy, we are the heroes"
"You are our invaders, we have dead heroes"

Veteran

He sits in the old
rocking chair.
His fingers, like
gnarled tree roots,
grip the armrests.

Forward
and
Back

Forward
and
Back

He rocks; he looks
through the window, at
the sky; his mind drifting
back to another
time.

The sky was so different
then, a gray smoky haze.
The air was filled
with the
sound of
whizzing bullets,
bombs exploding,
and screams, echoing
in his ears, their
tortured voices still
haunt him.

He sits in the old
rocking chair and
I sit on the floor, and he
tells me the stories
of that different sky, so that,
maybe, he can pass what
he has learned
to me.

Why do you bring me back
To this shattered place
With dying earth and twisted trees,
A flower whistling in the breeze.

I look down, i know this scene
The last i remember, it wasn't so clean.
The dimly-lit sun hits my chest
And my medals shine and gleam

Normandy. Nineteen Fourty-four.
I splash through the filthy water,
Soon ripened red with the paint of war
The sand under my boots whines painfully.

That was fifty years ago.
Fifty years since i gave my life,
Humanity sacrificed for something i believed in
I stare down at the stumps of my legs

When i read the paper, nine O'clock every morning,
I sigh in pain at the pointless conflicts today,
fuelled by the oil of greed and power,
As good men are allowed to die for those above.

Normandy. Nineteen Fourty-Four.
When i stepped from the landing craft,
I ran forward fuelled by what i believed in,
I ran forwards to fight for my country,
I ran forwards willing to die.

I look up at the sun, and it's incandescent rays
Bounce from my chest, reflecting from my medals.
Medals i wear with pride, for i was proud of what i did.

Help Me

Need a release
Someone to help me with this darkness
If I scream will you be there?
If I cry will you come to my rescue

If I start to die who will come to save me?
Will it be you oh mighty hero?
Whom everyone admires?

For when I fall will you be there to pick me up?
Or turn on everyone?
Will you cause mass destruction?
Or will you help clean it up?

Even a villain can be a hero
To ones eyes they are their savior
To others they are evil
Who will help me out?
