What is 'Emo'?

Okay this is something that has been bothering me for a while now so I'm gonna open it up for debate. What is Emo? What defines Emoness? Most would say being emo is being depressed and anxiety ridden and generally sad but aren't these things alot older than emo? which originated as a genre of music.

Here's an example : Cloud, he's the main character of Final Fantasy 7, he is depressed, anxiety ridden, unsure of what to do ect. but he used to be damned kool because of all this stuff. Now people brand him as the "Emo Video Game Guy".

Cloud was made back in 1997 along with Final Fantasy 7 and so, correct me if I'm wrong here, he came before emo. So how is it that he became Emo? Could it be that none of these characteristics are actually emo? that they've just been branded that way?

For my second point I'm going to examine a figure head Emo band : M.C.R
M.C.R are always going to be classed as emo but lets see : They aren't particularly depressed, they're deffinatley not anxiety ridden and they are most possitively sure of what to do which is make money, lots of it. All in all M.C.R seem to be reasonably happy they just whine alot.

So what really is Emo? Is it anything at all? Or has it just taken stuff that used to be kool and had it branded.

Emo was from the beginning a genre of music, then everything went horribly wrong. Nowadays you're "emo" if you show emotions at all, and I find that messed up, but whatever. Hell I even got called emo because I ate certain kind of popsicle all the time. I don't know wtf was up with that, but hey.

Being in subculture is pointless IMHO. People are changing they style and behaviour to fit the group. I think, people should listen the music that they like, wear clothes they like, and act natural. I meet some of those emo, goths, metals, etc, all those people seemed really fake.

Originally, emo is sub genre of punk, shorter for "emotional" punk. It concentrates on overreacting with mostly focusing negative feelings of individual. It's accompanied with a specific dressing style, mostly black striped sweaters, black dyed hair, piercings and chains. Of course, we mustn't miss the emo hair style. What now is? Everyone who shares a part of himself or asks for help is emo. If anyone mentioners, especially online that he has problems, feels lost, or whatever is labeled as emo. Mind you, that term is supposed to be used as an offense. Don't even get me started what happens if someone mentioners things like suicide or cutting yourself. it is true that a lot of people do that strictly for attention and pity of others.

People like that are called emos TODAY. They usually gather in god forsaken places, isolated from the rest of the world and pity themselves. Listen to songs with depressive lyrics, cut themselves, dress in black and think that nobody likes them that the whole world is turned against them. This is how term "emo" is used today.

For some unknown reason, people equal emos with goths. While they have absolutely nothing in common except the affinity to black color, i should warn you not to mix those two terms and do not mistake goths for emos when you see them.

The word is so ridiculously overused it makes me feel sick. Things that were once deep and emotional are not classed emo. I mean, in the terms of music, people mock Evanescence for Amy Lee's sad and passionate lyrics, while completely ignoring the true meanings. I mean who cares what is the message, as long as it's sad, it's emo.

So basically, emo is originally nothing more than punk subculture. Now real emos are self pitying depressed people.

At my school, "emo" is defined as the "half-goth" people. You know, the black fingernails and black T-shirts with tight jeans, but not completely gothic as to dye your hair black, wear loose, baggy black clothing, black makeup (even the boys), etc.

It depends on how you're going to look at it. "Emo" has degraded to a point that its almost a slang now. Emo music, emo clothing, emo hairstyles, emo behaviour. No one can really point a finger on it anymore. God, is SOMEONE going to bother searching up "EMO A-Z" and "become" one full-time? I know people who do, but those people end up being posers.

All of us go through a period of relevation and "Emoness" in which we depart from our childish depositions and embrace responsibility and "mature" feelings. Nothing too bad about that. Some people just take it a little worse since those feelings might truly contrast with who they really are.

Emos may be explained as emotionals meaning people who tend to get emotional very easily over mere stuffs. Emotional as in crying, anger, despair and fear. Thus we call them emos.

Emo can also be used to describe someone who had sudden mood change. This is not a serious case or rather not really emo. As those who call others emos are usually friends etc. E.g Oh, he's emo already. This can mean that he's either sad or angry and not really the Severe case of Emo.

Emo people can be cured of their [emo-ness ] with the help of closed ones, friends and public help. They can undergo counselling, and such to ease the emotional burden they had.

I'm Emo and I ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO BE EMO. I'ts not that we sit around and cry not all the time, we go through alot like wit problems at school and at home. It could be from drunken parents, abusive parent, and perpresure like nothing b4. Some people do it jus 2 b in a social group or to feel accepted or even 2 make fun of us. But even here I get picked on but I figured that I'll always get picked on and talked about till the day I die, and I'm okay wit that cause I now have true friends that r pepol like me and I know I can trust them. I'm am now very calm about my approch to stress, and yes, I am an emotional emo. And even though I'm emo I a hippie 2! I now cherish my life, even though I don't cherish it as much as I probly should because I cherish the lives of the people around me more than life itself, espcially my family. Dude (or chica), of course people are gonna be hesitant in "accepting" you when you're a guy and shop in the JUNIOR SECTION FOR GIRLS... and as far as going through tough times..... welcome to LIFE. Nobody's bashin on you being outgoing and zainy, honestly, those are my favorite type of people. But c'mon, when i see a dude with purple and pink and green in his hair and he's wearing tighter pants than my little sister's who's 4.......... no bueno.

But then again, i think it's just an adolescent thing because the emo phase generally tends to stop after turning 18 and it's time to get a job.. though there are exceptions ;-).

This is the truest thing I have read all day. Most emos are attention whores and the ones that aren't might actually have some problems, but they overdramatize (new word?) the whole thing. They are gonna grow up to be the actors someday.
