It's been revealed that the new 40GB PlayStation 3 features more than just a cut down hard disk drive. Sony has also thought to stick the 65nm version of the Cell inside the new console, reducing the power usage down to around 135 Watts (down from 200 Watts.) That means the console also runs cooler and quieter, which is always a plus for a device that usually resides in the living room. Sony also jiggled around a few other components by making the heat pipe smaller, swapping out the motherboard for a new version, and added a button battery to keep time when the system is off. Looks like potential PS3 purchasers will be looking forward to a less noticeable din then.

If only the 40gb had the PS1 and PS2 game emulation, I would definitely go for it, all those new features are pretty cool.

Once again, Sony has screwed up...

Those added features sound good, now if we can just get Rumble controllers....

Yeah, I'm going for the 60gb one too. But it's a shame the 40gb one has lost the ability to play PS1 and PS2 games, especially with the new features. It's all good though.

Oh that's good then, I'm going to get one when more good games come out for it.

Yah, the 80gb one didn't lose the ability though, but I won't need that much. 60gp is enough for me, I had to buy another HD for my 360 which is a pain.

Yeah, the 60gb and 80gb can play PS1 and PS2 games. The 40gb cannot.

I was kind of put into a position to buy the 60 gb PS3 because I really love the B/C.
I was gonna wait until a cheaper version came out like this one...but when I heard Sony was droppin the B/C I thought it was time to bite the bullet and buy a 60 GB PS3.
I dunno, I really only use my PS3 as a blu-ray/PS2 player anyways. So I guess I can't complain.
The new features sound cool though.

The 80 GB doesn't have full B/C does it?

And they're trying to get rid of the 60 GB model I thought...

I dunno wtf sony is up to.

From a technical standpoint, the 40gb console has had some useful changes but Sony from the start promised full backwards compatibility and from a gaming standpoint it's a failure. Every current console has had backwards compatibility and while these are good changes, I still want PS2 games. Sony think their measly 65 games by christmas is a varied selection to keep gamers happy yet the 2,500 PS2 games don't seem to be that important.

Japan:
20gb/60gb - Hardware Emulation, all PS1 and PS2 compatible.

Europe:
40gb, Software PS1 Emulation, no PS2 emulation.
60gb - Sofware Emulation, all PS1 and 70+% (as of firmware 1.90) PS2 compatible.

America:
20gb - Hardware Emulation, all PS1 and PS2 games compatible.
40gb - Software Emulation PS1 games compatible, no PS2 compatibility.
60gb - Hardware Emulation, all PS1 and PS2 games compatible.
80gb - Software Emulation, all PS1 and 90% of PS2 games compatible.

Apparently though the PS3 is now fully compatible but that's according to GAME. Since Sony (Europe) never updates it site it's hard to tell.

Uhh, you could just keep your PS2 and play ps1 and 2 games on it, Thats what I'm gonna do. Not that big of a deal for me, but I guess it annoys some people.

I don't like my PS2 and PS1 games looking like ass on my HDTV. :/

The upscaling offered in the ol' 60GB SKU is very nice.

Hey, didn't know where to post this at, and didn't want to make a whole thread about it. I'm looking for some help on picking out my newest system (already got a Wii, lol) and I've only saved like...150 bucks so far.

What's so special about higher gig hard drives, when you can just delete all the stuff you don't want anymore and just rely on the amount of space you have? I'm currently saving for another system, and though I'm royally pissed with Sony, I need a PS3 if I wanna play FF13 or MGS4. There's a special for XBOX360 at my local Gamestop that's 279 bucks and comes with a memory card, wireless controller, 5 livearcade games and silver live membership. Would that be a better deal than a 20 gig PS3?

I want a 360 for these reasons:
Mass Effect
All the Mistwalker games
the occasional FPS

I want a PS3 for these reasons:
Backwards Compatibility (ps2 AND ps1)
Final Fantasy
MGS4
Free online play (or atleast I've heard it's free)
Blu-ray Player

Based on everything I've posted, which version of PS3 should I get, or should I go ahead and get the 360 instead? I can always purchase a hard drive later.

Sony has denied using the new chips, but instead use the old 90nm chips.

Sony: New 40GB PS3 still using 90nm chips

Posted Nov 03, 2007 at 05:35AM by Victor B.

We recently made a report about the new 40 GB PS3 stating that it was using 65nm chips and had increased cooling powers to boot. Suffice it to say, however, that those reports seem to be erroneous. A Sony spokesperson recently told Heise Online that they were actually still using 90nm processing chips with the new PlayStation 3.

This isn't to say that the PlayStation 3 hasn't been improved, however. According to the report, the PS3 is still sporting a revised design that's supposed to lower power consumption. Instead of cranking out 180 to 200 watts, as previous PS3s were likely to do, the revised design lessens the power consumption to 120-140 watts instead, saving you both some power and a bit of cash as well.

Sony does still plan on implementing 65nm chips in the future. For now, however, it seems these 90nm chips will just have to do.
