What is the best Rpg you played in terms of. story, battle system, characters, ideals, monsters. leaving graphics out of this because a lot of good RPGs are really old. anyway let me know what you think.

This topic probably exists but I'll be damned if I can find the original -_-;; Damn search function. I'd have to say either Paper Mario or Final Fantasy IV.

Also, in before Final Fantasy VII/Kingdom Hearts fanatics :/

FF VII!

And I'm not a fricking fanatic.

(Nor am I biased, I've beaten V - XII except for XI, hell, I've even beaten X-2.)

I just think it's better. :)

Star Ocean!

Tales of the Abyss!

Old School: Chrono Trigger, FFVI
Semi-Old (PS1): FFVIII,Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, FFVII, Persona, FF:Tactics
Semi-New(PS2, GC): Final Fantasy X, Persona 3, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, Tales Of Symphonia.
New: .........none...>_>

Those RPG's all merit an award for being the best RPG's Of their time but the best Rpg ever has to be Chrono Trigger. Even though it had it's flaws that game was well ahead of it's time and I thank SquareSoft(Square-Enix fails) for bringing the magnificent game over to the states.

Oh yeah Xenogears rocks as well and that would've een my choice if Chrono Trig didn't come out.

Quoted for the truth.

The graphics of the game however are quite bad. It's not as bad as FFV for instance, but it's not as good as FF VIII (which was quite the graphics revolution back in the day). The plot's depth and the character development more than makes up for the flaws brought about by 1998 graphics though. The battle system is lots of fun to play and the music in the background is wonderful and totally fitting to the game's environment.

Thank god, finally a legitimate answer in a sea of FF fanboyism :\

I love the FF series as much as the next guy, but they aren't exactly revolutionary or innovative in terms of ideas or gameplay...

Persona 3

A great cast of characters, some of the best party members in a RPG ever (except that damn dog). The soundtrack is off the wall, the story is a roller coaster ride the whole 70+ hours, the battles are intense, and its very addictive. Better than any FF game for sure.

If you haven't played this game, you should get it. You won't be disappointed.

Play Xenogears, it will spoil you for all other RPGs.

Best RPG would be Final Fantasy VII, bar none.

Battle system is amazing, materia system was even more amazing, and the story is bar none the best video game story ever.

best RPG game?: AD&D the real book game not the console or pc game.

even FFVII couldn't compete to a game that had no limits that was the whole point of RPG.

but there are other games like the "parasite eve"1-2 games which were good stories and fun battle systems 2 had real time battle which added a ton of difficulty and made it much better to play.

Xenogears was fun a bit too lineal but not nearly as bad as FFX was although
FF tactics was also a bit poor on the outside the story playing it was a fun game to play.

FFXI was a great game but truly it had a few major flaws like its dependence on a favorable community attitude which unfortunately fell apart within 2 yrs of NA launch.

A current game that has a fun story line to play is Hellgate: London but then I'd have to list a whole slew of MMO's

Final Fantasy VII was the one that got me started back in the day, so that's my obvious choice.

My runner up would be Skies Of Arcadia, for the addition of airship battles, something that really should be covered in future FF games. Or they should just make another Skies Of Arcadia. :-b

I miss Phantasy Star 1-3 :( That awesome cat, the crazy dungeons I always got lost in. Ahh.

Final Fantasy III also, I think I'm the only guy who's least favorite final fantasy was VII...I apparently had an unusual hate for the characters.

check that, XII sucked worse.

#1 for me would probably be Morrowind, followed closely by the typical classics.
BOF II and FFIII (or VI) probably were the most prominent of the oldies but goodies for me.

Its just as simple as this... :

Planescape:Torment

By far the best CRPG of all time. Not even Baldurs Gate series, Morrowind , or even the ''younger'' version Oblivion could complete.

(Here is a link http://www.mybittorrent.com/info/478635/ for downloading)

Planescape: Torment is a computer role-playing game developed for Microsoft Windows by Black Isle Studios. Released on December 12, 1999 (see 1999 in video gaming), the game takes place in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Planescape campaign setting. Torment places emphasis on conversation and storyline instead of combat. The game begins in Sigil, where the protagonist, an enigmatic and heavily scarred immortal dubbed The Nameless One by the game's interface, wakes up in a mortuary with no memory of his identity and past experiences. Assuming the role of The Nameless One, players embark on a quest to solve the mysteries surrounding him.

The game sold about 400,000 copies, according to game designer Scott Warner, but received almost universal critical praise; it has since become a cult classic. The game was added to Gamespy's "Hall of Fame" in August 2004, and to Gamespot's "Greatest Games of All Time" list in October 2005.

Anyone who thinks FF > Planescape , miserably fails. Thanks.

Did anyone ever play the Golden Sun games on GBA? The djinn system was a lot of fun imo. Also id go with FF VIII as a side note. Junctioning summons was fun but I did not care at all for drawing magic.

Mass Effect Is good But The Poor Battle system keeps it from being in RPG glory...I have to say The Mega Ten Games Definetly deserve a spot on the list so I'm Gonna add Persona 2:Eternal Punishment, Persona 3: FES, and the underrated Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner.

Final Fantasy VII: loved the characters and plot. if they made a remake i would tottaly buy it the day it came out. if its for the PS3? then thats a problem.
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion= (its #1 if your a serious Roleplayer.)
Mass Effect (Its loading of the graphics is slow, though there isnt a big Evil or Good you can be a good guy or a good guy that acts mean)

1. Chrono Cross, its battle system was complex yet perfect, the leveling system was bar none the greatest, the story was incredible and the music was plain sexy.
2. Final Fantasy VII, it really is that good, the only thing holding it back is the plain XP/leveling system and frequency of random battles.
3. Golden Sun 1/2
4. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
5. Chrono Trigger

That's a tough call, it depends on the type of RPG we're talking about. For traditional RPG my favorite is either Chrono Trigger or FFIX (Non-emo main character pwns all, that and I've always been a fan of Amano's work over Nomura's). For action oriented RPG with a lvling system I'd have to go with Star Ocean: The Second Story. And for adventure RPG the first Kingdom Hearts holds a special place in my heart (bad pun, I know >.<).

For those that love the Star Ocean series, Squenix is remaking the first two games on the PSP and the first SO is getting a complete over-hall, they're even giving it the battle system of SO2.

Edit: Almost forgot TRPGs of which Disgaea 2 holds the championship belt for me.

Dude, FF is getting old, the really sweet rp's are the ones, that involve more historical backrounds, that make you feel like your actually in it, like Oblivion, or Fable, more towards Fable, but i've played FF VII, and it isn't that good, the story gets old, but with more recent games like Fable, you can design your own destiny, now thats something to look forward to in the new game, Fable 2.

Ymir'sEmbrace

Meh, there's something to say about a beautifully orchestrated story, with an excellent music score, that unfolds around you. Instead of a 10 hour sand-box game with an ending that left me feeling quite empty.

I think Lost Oddyssey showcases how a great story and good design can truly make a good RPG.

Definately have to go with the Earthbound series. The characters are as real as you can get, and despite having a cute artstyle and a bit of humor, they are actually surprisingly dark and well-written epics. Mother 3 is definately the best in this series, and one of the best RPGs of all time, not overcomplex nor does it drag on endlessly like other RPGS (FF10 and Xenosaga, despite having brilliant stories, were too long as is, and the leveling factor makes it unnecessarily longer at that, and thus would drag on and on and on and become extremely repetitious, while Mother 3 went smoothly). Overall, just pure entertainment. ^^

Ymir'sEmbrace
03-29-2008, 11:03 PM
BAH! I really want to play Mother 3 but I don't know how to read Kanji and NoA has decided not to translate the game for American audiences. We can only hope having Lucas in Brawl will change that soon.
