I found there was a long topic in "general talk" about it, but since it has lots of errors at the start, and got to US shinigamis with nuclear bobms zanpaktus, i decided to make a new one here...
The origin of Soul Society - We don't actually know how long Soul Society existed - it could have been there from the begining of time - but i tend to think of it more as FIRST simply being a part of the spirit world controlled by hollows, that were terrorizing human souls, then jumping on top of each other to become Menos Grande...
All that until a powerfull spirit (yama-jii) carved up (in fire and blood) a safe zone for spirits, by butchering any hollow that went into it, thus forming Soul Society. Afterwards he formed the acadamy so other, younger shinigamis can do the work while he takes a hot bath....
Also, from what we've learned about the balance between soul society and the real world, the same balance that the Quincies broke, is that souls have to go BOTH ways - thus souls that die (and possibly shinagamis) are reborn as humans on earth (or possibly as animals too).
*The problem with a finite number of souls, in a world where more and more humans are born all the time is irrelevant - find someone who believes in reincarnation and ask them how thier religion solves it - it's not the matter in discussion. however there HAS to be a finite number, or the Quincies killing hollows would have had no effect.
We have seen a glimpse of the life in Soul Society - we see the shinagamis do not uphold the law, or try and stop murderes in Rongonkyu (sp?). As someone stated, this might be done out of nesescity, since if no souls are killed none can go to the real world.
*another thing i thought of - what happens to souls hollows kill? are they reborn? consumed? if they are reborn hollows may be part of the balance of the world.. or were before Soul Society... but nvm.
now the parakeet-spirit kid (shibata) remembered Chad. he kept his form, remembered his previous life. he also has a "brother" - adopted in soul society, who was 50 or 500 years old and still stayed the same age.
we also have Renji, Rukia, and Yachiro, who started as children (babies?) and grew up. hitsugaya, hinamori, Matsomoto and Gin all stated fairly young, and later grew up.
We've never heard any shinagami speak of thier lives before they died. we hadn't seen shinagami's start out at an older age.
My theory is that
a- souls with spirit power (the ones who require eating) do not have thier old memories from thier previous lives when they get to Soul Society, while "normal" souls do
b- normal souls do not age, souls with spirit power age normally, perhaps slowing down / stopping after puberty, or when they become shinagamis (we hadnt seen anyone become a shinagami before - do they get the clothes and sword or is there some kind of ritual? )
c- babies can and are often born in Soul Society. the four strongest, oldest families are considered the Noble families, but others must be able to have children as well. in the Shinigami acadamy, rukia and renji were outsiders... but where did the rest come from? they could not have ALL been nobely born, or even like SoiFon, from a family of high standing. the souls of those babies might be simply picked by from those who die - same as those who die come to earth as babies - or perhaps THAT is how new souls are created.
d- souls MIGHT die from old age, or from date epiration, unless there are hollow raids on Soul Society, otherwise we'd be knee deep in ever-young noble family members. Byakuya's parents died too. maybe it's like Tolkin's Elves, who just tire of living (or from dieing) and "move on"...
e- this is less founded then the rest, but there's no info to disprove it - i think that all souls who reach Soul Society who can use spirit force come as babies. there is not much to base this on besides the fact that all flashbacks show every shinagami we know as a young child, when they started struggling in Soul Society. Rukia MIGHT have died as a baby at the same time as her sister, or she could have died as an adult, changed to a baby and her sister recognized her by the strand of hair that's ALWAYS across her face, freaked, abandoned her, and ran off. By that theory Rukia's sister had no spirit power - and we know she did not become a shinagami.
I think that about covers everything i wanted to say...
*nods, and goes back to do what he was actually suppoused to be doing*
