these will give you some idea of your connection if you don't know what it is:
http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/Bandwidth_meter/7004-7254_16-0.html
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp
http://www.wugnet.com/myspeed/speedtest.asp
http://promos.mcafee.com/speedometer
there was a really good one I used to have, but lost it when i wiped windows recently...
If you run the same one more than once, you'll get bad results as you'll already have the "answer" to the test. And none of them will actually use 100% of your speed. They just give an idea of how fast you're going at the time you take the test.
Anyway, I get 8Mbps down, 1Mbps (roughly) up.

My connections is 2.2Mbps....I'm gonna get 8MB Broadband soon...
I've been looking at some of the posts here, and I've seen numbers like 11MB or 100MB connections? How the hell do you get that kind of connection? The USA must have some VERY good Broadband services to get that kinda connections..
Meanwhile in the UK, we only go up to 8MB Broadband...and thats pretty damn fast...

12-24-2005, 09:39 PM
100mb are just people talking out of their arses.
100MB is just what the modem says.Every broadband connection has the possiblity to reach 100MB,but ISPs limit them to (for now) 8MB.Why? Because it's costeffective.
The ammount of traffick that an ISP with 100MB constantly per user would get would have to make them charge about 500 dollars/420 euros a month.Nobody would do that so untill technology (servers and switches) improves, they limit them.
In anycase,I have for but they're raising the limit to 8 in march.
I think the absolute limit for now is 16 out of 100.

I have cable and get exactly 3 mb on my master pc. But my Lappy is my main one i take that every whare and leetch I get between E1 speed(2.048) and 245 kbs on my lappy. Never can getmax cable speed though.

^ That is a BIG RIP. Right now, I'm paying 10 dollars first 3 months then 15 dollars for the rest of the year contract.
1.5 Mbits = 160 Kilobytes Max d/l Unlimited.
384 Kbit = 40 Kilobytes Max Upload Unlimited.

OMFG...it's beyond a big rip compared to you.
There is a difference between actual Speed and the connection itself. My connection is 3 MB. Actual speed at home is like 200 kb/s for downloading. 100 MB is just what the icon says you fools. You can't download at 100 MB/s!!!!
DragonBlade
12-26-2005, 07:10 AM
^ Fool that is correct. Thats the rate of LAN, speed between computers connected together. It is very possible to d/l at a rate of 100 MBits.
Curently Iv had my cable for a 1 1/2 year and am paying 29 dollars a month. Absolutly gonna drop it once I get an amplifier. At my school thier connection is oc3 and that is 155 mb. I am considering speding weekends thier when security leaves.

For 30 euros a month I get uncapped DL speed. However this gets me 10gb download and 1.5gb upload per month.I can increase it for 1 euro per GB download and 0.1 GB upload.
I have a Flatrate (I can dl and upload as much as I want).
And I have DSL 3000 (Downstream upto 380 kb/s and upstream up to 40kb/s)
and we are paying with the telephone costs 60€ for all.

With cable I get about 4 mb/s. I do not know what went down, but earlier in the year my speeds exceeded 6 mb/s. My friend has the exact same connection and ISP as I do (and lives a few blocks away) and yet he gets over 20 mb /s. My hypothesis is that there are less people on his cable connection and that the limiter for the speeds on his is screwed up. Lucky bastard.

I don't think that's the case. Cable is supposed to be faster than dsl connections and i get 10 mb/s with dsl so i think you should call the company and ask if there is anything wrong with the connection.

I don't think that's the case. Cable is supposed to be faster than dsl connections and i get 10 mb/s with dsl so i think you should call the company and ask if there is anything wrong with the connection.
Cable is supposed to be slower than DSL b/c it is bandwidth-dependent (based on the amt of traffic on the cable backbone) and DSL is not. However, where I live, cable is faster (probably due to distance from telco service and low cable traffic).
As for the speeds, I am guessing different ISPs have different limits set on throughput and different quality backbones. However, like I said before, my friend has the exact same connection and ISP as I do and he gets over 20 mb/s. I explained my reasoning behind this in my last post. I am guessing you either live near a telco station or just happen to have a nice ISP, b/c the DSL around here goes around only 800 kb/s (I am not joking) and the filters do not work very well.

Verizon FiOS, in which I have a 50mbs download rate and a 3.5mbs upload rate, but I don't exactly remember the upload rate number. Some sites I can actually hit 4 meg a second downloads, it's intense. Only downside to this connection is the fact that I fall offline constantly, it only lasts for a few seconds but it very irritating.

Eh, if I'm not wrong, mine is 10Mbps. I think so, but it is kinda crazy. When it is functioning well, it is super fast. If it is moody, it is slow. >.< My modem is a female, kinda obvious. LOL. (:
1.0Mbps >_> well thats good i guess..

100.0 mbps at uni
For me, it is 16 megabit, or around 2 megabites a second. Pretty fast. Downloaded PlaneShift (232MB) in around 5 minutes.

I'm on a wireless, so my normal 100Mb/s connection gets throttled back to about 52Mb/s max, but usually, running slower, b/c the router is an 802.11g, but the wireless in the lapdog is 802.11b... *sigh*
