PSP Is double the price of the DS and in my point of view not worth the money, i'm sure the PSP is brilliant but the DS appeals more to me. But I guess thats because I grew up around nintendo.
I prefer the DS but thats just my point of view ^^ Zanteszuken970 is obviously a huge Sony fanboy :)

Definately the DS, I brought my DS to a friends house one day playing Mario Kart DS. And he offered to trade me his PSP and a couple games for my DS and Mario Kart

@Topic: Ever noticed how almost every decent PSP game is a port or a sequel of an older game?

Well I haven't seriously played a game in a long time, and handheld games aren't my cup of tea.
Regardless, I think the DS is more value for your money ... I mean, IMO it's foolish to get a PSP at the moment ... what will you be playing?

Using third party things the DS can do pretty much everything the PSP can
ChansteR
02-03-2006, 09:13 PM
but the thing is that you gotta use third party thingys while it is stock on the PSP and graphics are plainly way better than that of the DS but I aint saying that the DS isnt good because it is for its price

The PSP is good, it would be better if more good games were released on it.
I own a DS, pretty damn good system. I will get a PSP someday, you know, when it isn't $300.
Also, the PSP doesn't have Jump Superstars...

hmm....stats wise...the DS is better, and to me personally the DS is better, it has better games for it, and the fun factor is just better...the PSP just has games that are ported to to it, from the PS2, and any new games...are just not that fun..(except for Lumines)
to me, the DS is much better, because its more fun, and that is all that matters to me :)

Luminas is the best its the new tetris and its going to do the samething tetrix did for the gameboy because its the best so addictive and the gameplay s nice too =)

The bad thing bout PSP is the price....memory cards are just insane in cost, a 2 gig cost a friggin $450 in which is like a inch peice of plastic with software inside and it cost more than the psp itself... :(
DS....you can get raped by talking to strangers ;)

Its about innovation. The nintendo DS is something you haven't seen before. Agreed PSP has better graphics, and its super sexy, but I really like the DS Games. Trauma Center is an amazing game, come on can you perform surgery on someone in a PSP? Nope! The touch screen and dual screen system in the DS is perfect for games like this, games like Warioware TOUCHED, and the new Kirby Game for it ROCKED. Whats PSP got? A GTA game thats not nearly as good as the console version? Lumines? (Ok, I'll admit that game got me.) Ape Escape...come on the best thing about Ape Escape was that it made perfect use of the dual joystick on the ps1. Heh, I'm done ranting, its an obvious decision.

But you have to buy overprized UMD movies which won't run on any other system or player, making them nearly useless and you won't be able to watch a whole movie because the battery dies so fast. And who needs portable movies anyway?

Forgive me if this is a repeat thread but I've been thinking over which one to make the jump to to replace my GBA. I've heard good things about both and bad things about both but I would like to have a new one before a buncha trips I have next year.
I mostly play RPGS if anything on my GBA so if either one has better selections it would be appreciated not only which system but also game recommendations.
Seff vi Britannia

RPGS? PSP, definately.
Monster Hunter Freedoms 1/2, both massive action-RPGs that are impossible to complete because they are simply so massive, Breath of Fire, Key of Heaven, FF tactics, tons more i haven't played.
Aside from that, PSP has better graphics. :P
I would recommend the DS. More fun games. Also more interactive, plus aside from the fact that it doesn't have that many RPGs. It is host to good quality mario games, as well as Zelda, and Final Fantasy 3, which should cover your RPG :D
Anyway, all in all the DS has more fun games and a variety of games. The brain training is also fun and their is that courtroom game I cant remember the name, which is aimed more towards adults
(Then again the PSP has Crisis Core coming out for it O.o)
The DS has plenty of RPGs. :/
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime
Contact <<< Which is really really good.
Final Fantasy III
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Heroes of Mana
Children of Mana
It's a Wonderful World
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
Etrian Odyssey
Luminous Arc
Archaic Sealed Heat
Tales of the Tempest
Castlevanias
Mega Man Star Force
Magical Starsign
Pokemon
Chocobo Tales + Other Square stuff
Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
LostMagic
Digimon World DS
etc, etc, :/
+ it has what is personally one of my favorite games. Phoenix Wright. (http://forums.bleachportal.net/showthread.php?t=49884)
That said I don’t own a PSP but plan on getting one in a few days.
Both are good investments, I’m just saying that DS is all good on the RPG side.

I have both systems. I have alot more games for my psp than I have for my DS.
The DS games I have are pretty much made and produced Nintendo ... other than those games, I don't have any interest of picking it up.
On the PSP, it also has wifi, and the wifi is built in on the PSP, and it's easier to configure.... on the DS you have to buy the adapter/usb connector separately.. or you'll have to deal with the complicated set ups in order to connect to your router..
Aside from that, it all comes to taste. What type of games are you into, would you prefer better graphic>short loading time, etc.
Plus I would like to point out what allcreation said.
"Crisis Core: FF7 is out and only for PSP". <--- Pretty much sums it up for me.
Also, the PSP can have emulators that you can enjoy old snes/gameboy games...
or you can download demos from the psp browser or transfer them on to the psp through a pc.
PSP also serves as a great external HD, as long you have the large memory stick size.
Nowadays, I only play the DS when I feel the urge to fire up Final Fantasy Tactics Advance... and pretty soon I'll stop doing that since a new FF Tactics is out for the PSP.

Wrong. DS has wifi also, the USB is there for someone that does not have a wireless router to connect to the internets. Very reliable. If it doesnt have wifi, how does it connect to another DS? As for setting it up, its a piece of cake...
Contra 4 for DS and FFTA2, FFCC, Advance Wars yes plz. Zelda, mario kart, geometry wars! I love the touch pad =p.
Flash card = yum for DS. There is a support for SNES emulator on the ds etc.

DS, because it's supposed to mainly be a gaming console.
DS has better games, in my opinion - the BEST multiplayer games. Call them kiddie if you want, they're still fun as monkeys!
The PSP never looked sexy to me. It looks like a brick made of coal. The DS, on the other hand, it's sleek and you can do the flipp-y thing with its cover. It appeals to me more.
If I want better graphics to watch a movie, I'd watch on my best friend's 500-inch plasma.

Just as there are hacks for the PSP, R4 has rescued the DS.
Equal terms really, graphics or comic games, it's your choice. But I have both, so I don't really care.
But if I had to choose one, it would have to be the DS of late, due to my addiction to a set few games.
Kirby: Canvas Curse ftw!

I own both these are my comments that ive made on another site...
The problem I find with my PSP is that it tries to hard to be as good as a console and that tends to let it down in the creativity part. It grabs with graphics and the whole “Console on the go” but it lacks compared to the actual consoles. The DS on the other hand is not trying to be a console so it makes up for that in its stylistic graphics and gameplay.. Dont get my wrong I mean there are good games for my PSP but in the end I find that alot of the games have better versions on the Playstation..
On the other hand the DS has many games that instead of trying too hard to be like their Cube counterparts they go with what they have and add other features that directly link to the uniqueness of the handheld itself.. rather than a lacking version of the console version thats on the PSP.
Plus I dont see any PSP's looking this sexy...

One thing to note is that graphics does not automatically equal fun. Those who rely on graphics as a selling point for PSP are kidding themselves.
Seff vi Britannia
01-02-2008, 12:09 AM
Actually, wrong.
Xbox360 > Wii, why?
Graphics. Above anything else. I got a headache playing Super Mario Galaxy because the graphics were so AWFUL.
And more to the point- DS is for kids. :\
And if you're 18 and enjoy DS games, well... - ______ -
And i agree about Monster Hunter Freedom 2.
That game alone is better than anything the DS has, and probably will ever have.
(And we have FF crisis Core. Argument over.)
Well, that’s because you’re a shallow sad excuse for a gamer who cares more about the graphics and the ESRB rating then to enjoy a game for the gameplay.
It's funny how getting older has made me more interested in these games people say are targeted towards a younger audience.
Mario Galaxy looks fantastic. It's not always about the polygon count; the game just has a great art style.
Same for most DS games. High Resolution Sprites can look a ton better than some of the playstation one era graphics you see on the PSP.
Listen, I think BOTH systems are good. But just because the PSP has "Monster Hunter." (Which I've played and consider average- I don't really understand why you people look at it like the second coming, but whatever, I don't really care.) Doesn’t make the PSP the greatest thing in the world.
Graphics aren't anything. Metroid Prime 3 doesn't look a whole lot better technically than Metroid Prime 2, but it's the attention to detail, the art style that makes or breaks a games aesthetic appeal. Not HD, and not "omg 3d graphics olol."
The DS has great games, but you don't see me looking at Elite Beat agents and saying “Whoa, I’d trade the awesome touch screen controls any day for better graphics! Oh, how I wish this game was on the PSP instead!”
I don't, because that'd be absurd. And people that say graphics are more important than gameplay shouldn't really be PLAYING games, just watching them, and enjoying the pretty cut scenes.
PSP and DS both have good games. Not just games for kids, and not just eye candy.
Icestorm
01-02-2008, 01:59 AM
Agree'd. If you play games based on graphics, go watch a movie.
The real 'kids' are the ones that see pretty graphics and make a decision soley based on that. I own both so I can really tell you that the PSP loses because it wants to be a console yet fails compared to the consoles. I want something thats both unique (as in has its own seperate titles) and something thats innovative.. Ive played games for too long to be impressed by pretty graphics on a portable.. I want something NEW.. The DS fulfills both those categories.. the PSP does not.

@DB, I didn't say DS doesn't have Wifi.
When i said DS is more complicated to set the wireless setting, I meant the whole self inputing part.( ip, subnet mask, gateway, DNS),yea i'm too lazy.
On the PSP it scans and it inputs everything by itself, so all you needed was to type in the WEP key.
@Ice, so what if he is basing it off on graphics?
it's all comes down to personal tastes..
some prefer better gameplay and innovative concept, and some just prefer a portable device that produces better graphics.
Hyugga Neji
01-02-2008, 02:09 AM

Yeah but those features are pretty much useless.. The UMD are overpriced and the music capablities are crap compared to something like an Ipod.
What are you talking about same types of touch? Where has there been a portable that you can touch? The psp doesnt have it. :S
The DS brings games like Elite Beat Agents and Kirby: Canvas Curse where they use the touch screen to the full extent.. The PSP is just another portable console with pretty graphics.. It does nothing for the imagination. Tell me a game on the PSP that will be completely different to what you can get on its console counter part.

What do u mean the UMDs are overpriced. there about the same as any regular DS game. The prices for almost all PSP,DS,PS2 are all in close range. So there is no matter in price.
I didnt mean the DS had a touch but nvm that.
What do u mean by another portable console? The DS and PSP are the 2 main portable consoles! There are other Nintendo portables but the DS and PSP are like the only ones used now. The PSP brings games u can get at home only on ur PS2 OR PS3 portable. The PSP brings these great games u can only have at home on the road. Dose the DS have games u can get on PS2 PS3 or even PSP? The WII even has better games than DS. the ds dose not bring games from Wii on the road.

Yeah mizu I get where ya coming from.. But people that base their liking of PSP soley on its graphics are simply shallow. If you like PSP because of the games then thats cool.. but graphics dont make a console. :)
@Sweeter: Zelda ftfw!
@Hyuuga.. No I said console couterpart.. as in the PS3. And about not bringing Wii on the road.. thats the exact reason why its good. It brings unique games unlike the PSP games that have already been put on the PS3 and are worse versions that you have probably played 100 times before.

Because on Crisis Core, the talk scenes and gameplay are similar to Kingdom Hearts styled graphics on the ps2. I assume they will be the same on Birth By Sleep.

The prices for almost all PSP,DS,PS2 are all in close range. So there is no matter in price.
Where I come from, not really.
You can get a DS for a third of the price of a PSP with the minimum memory.
As for the games, a DS title goes for around 90% the price of a PSP's. But there are roms for that, though.
And, it does come down to personal taste. Console wars, lulz.
For me, the improvement graphics-wise is not to a point that will materially affect my gaming enjoyment. To some, it might, that's what toasts their roasts.
Oh yeah, Crisis Core. Damn. In order to afford that, I'd have to promise my firstborn.

Just like any and every console, game selection and affordability beats graphics when it comes to selling systems. I'd like to own a PSP, but I can't bring myself to get one, because there simply isn't enough good games on the system. Tales of the World, Tekken 5, MGS Portable Ops, Disgaea, and Crisis Core. Those are the only titles I'm interested in. Not to mention the fragile nature of the system, it's lackluster battery life, and Sony's
Now, the DS on the otherhand has handfuls of great games coming out, backwards compatibility with GBA games which doubles the amount of awesome games you have to choose from, and has components you can buy inorder to make it do the same thing as a PSP (play movies, surf the web, act as an MP3 player) All of that combined with the touch screen and you can see why the DS is the fastest selling videogame system.

*Sigh* So basically, the main objection to the PSP is the price. Don't get me started. -_ -
And i don't call myself a "shallow" gamer either. Forgive me if i don't want to play something that looks like a pile of sh*t freshly regurgitated by my cat (that being, er, every game on the DS?)
And some people prefer to play serious games rather than kiddy games. (Kirby might appeal to my four year old brother, but not me.) If i want to draw, i'll use my tablet. ^__^
And yes, Crisis Core alone is superior to absolutely anything the DS will ever have. :)
And the PSP is only fragile if you're a willy and hurl it around, trying to break it. I've had mine without any form of protective casing for two years and it's not damaged at all. Battery life is 8 hours on the battery i have ~ that'll last me any journey.
For the record - Mario Galaxy graphics...

So yeah, that's on a Wii, btw (next gen console.)
And those graphics are inferior to Final fantasy IX, on the PS1 (which is a past past gen console)

i rest my case regarding mario galaxy. :) Hell, the game gave everyone in the room a headache after we found those rabbit things and my aunt forced us to turn it off.

PSP is for serious gamerz
DS for kids. Simple as that.

Haha I never said anything about graphical capability.. Its obvious the PSP has better graphics but I have both kthx and I can compare the difference.
PSP = Regurigitated PS2/PS3 games that are both limited and obviously done to death already. Graphics dont mean squat if the games arnt interesting or new in their approach.
DS = Actual original games for the console. The games arnt kiddy.. they are fun.. If you include serious gamers to be people that require their portable console to be just another shiney toy that has no imagination then np thats cool.
As for me i'll stick to something thats relatively interesting rather than something that I can get on a console.

I couldn't resist. I hated that game to high heavens.
Now, KH: Chain of Memories, that's a game worth praising.
The card-battle-system thingie was truly revolutionary. And the graphics rocked, considering it was on the GBA.
And, FF =/= auto-win.
Can a "serious gamer" sincerely call the cash cow that is FFX-2 "good"?
(:
Tbh, I can't compare the two.
There are two simple reasons...
Nintendo: Zelda
Sony: Final Fantasy
So, they both are full of huge win in my book. However I do not own a PSP, but when FF is released in the US you better believe I will.

I can call FF4,5,6,7,8,9,10,12 good though.

And besides, you say you don't like FF, how do you know how bad it was then? Played it? Mhm.. =\
Hey now. FFX-2 was alright. :o
It seems to be the most unliked FF game, but I had fun with it.
Mainly because it was rly different.
I liked it ^^
funnily enough Kray, so did i! I generally liked FF10-2 of the FF it was the weakest but enjoyable none the less:)
Anyway I think you hit the nail on the head there when you say when it comes down to it neither are comparable, as both offer a range of different enjoyable games..

I love Final Fantasy.
It's just that - it's superficial to conclude that anything prefixed with "FF" is win.
You have to at least try the game to know.
And the first five hours into FFX-2, every fiber of my being was screaming for me to torch the godforsaken excuse for a game.

PSP does have original games made only for the PSP..
I can't name them all but I'll name the few that I own
Crisis Core and MGS Portable Ops.
Both have original story lines and both have special controls and gameplay made specifically for the PSP. They aren't just ports from PS2 or PS3.
Then there's the Bleach series. I don't see any other games on any other consoles that will have the depth of character selection as the one on Bleach: Heat the Soul 4 and the upcoming 5th title.
Also, the best games on DS that I played and owned are Mario Cart DS, New Super Mario Bros. and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time... i like them, but haven't they been done before as well? Yea, I can touch the menu screen and play mini games with my stylus, it makes the gameplay that much different.

Yeah, Im done argueing.. cant be bothered but the main thing that annoyed me is that.. everyone has their own tastes and its pretty stupid of someone to say that the 'DS is for kids' everyone likes different things and saying that someone else's opinion is 'wrong' is very arrogant.
It means to say that anyone who enjoys the DS has the mind of a child which is frankly insulting.. those kind of opinions should be kept to yourself.

I totally agree, everyone DOES have their own tastes. But if you're the sort of person who's into "kirby" and "mario", then your tastes are games aimed at three-year olds. Which is fine, don't get me wrong. But at the same time, seriouz gamerz are serioz.

It is true that the nicer DS games are aimed at a younger demographic and/or a general audience, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying them.
It's a matter of purpose and taste.
My purpose is enjoyment and my taste focuses on gameplay and simplicity.
Whereas certain serious gamerz would prefer to devote the better part of their lives obsessing and masturbating over every minute circumstantiality of their favorite game.
Not that I'm one to talk. I did go through a BLEACH phase.

Square-Enix makes a lot of good games for it. Final Fantasy, upcoming Kingdom Hearts. And then there's a Japanese only game that I like very much: Jump Ultimate Stars.

Well, considering where he lives, I don't think there's an abundance of DS games he can get his hands on.
When I think of Europe, I think of kids playing WoW or Counter Strike, so that must've influenced certain tastes to young teens in gaming. Therefore the PSP, 360 or PS3 offers more variety and choices of the genres they're used to.
Icestorm
01-04-2008, 06:23 AM
Europe has the same access to games as USA and Australia where I live. The cultures as far as gaming are all quite similar.. If you wanted to say that his gaming was effected he would probably have to live in an Asian country where life style and factors do change what kind of games are generally played as opposed to the western countries.
For instance Starcraft is incredibly popular in Korea so much so that its a sport.. no-where else is this the case :) Japan has pretty different tastes too, as opposed to western countries.

As of right now, I'd say either the PSP or the DS is a good choice no matter which one you pick. Before, it was DS hands down.
PSP has alot of good games now. They got games like Final Fantasy for those who have never experience them way back in the days. They also got Final Fantasy Tactics. That's a plus although I think it's just a remake. They also have Disgaea. The Metal Gear games are pretty solid although it uses a card based system for you to attack, move, heal, etc. This is just from the top of my head but I know that PSP has a good selection of games to choose from now. Don't forget that it's an MP3 player also. And it's not even worth getting movies for the PSP.
The DS is doing well for itself. With Zelda the Phantom Hourglass having released not too long ago and classic games like Advance Wars, Trauma Center, Brain Age, the Final Fantasy series, DS is also a very good choice to choose from. There are many games to choose from. Also out there on the net is a program that allows you to use your DS as an MP3 player also. It's safe and easy to use. I did it to my DS. What's cool is that you can have your DS closed and it will still play the music.
Whatever you choose, it will be a good choice, whether it be the PSP or the DS.

@Mavvy, there are two other Metal Gear Solid games for PSP (Portable Ops series) that doesn't use the card system. It's the standard 3rd person shooter/stealth gameplay.
The card based ones were good as well, though it takes time to get used to if you are a beginner. :)

Man, Nintedo is just being a arse and not sharing some of the good game title with Sony. Anyway PSP FTW!!! DS does have some cool game but the only one I can think of is Advance Wars O.O, I don't like any of the other game titles. And I can't wait for Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core, the cinematic scenes are awesome in it, you won't have a DS game which can beat it and not even its game play graphics. DS revolves heavily on repeating itself and doing the same thing over and over again, except it gets harder, but the games are classic games which people enjoy. PSP on the other hand have better graphic and game play, but because it got hacked so early when is came out, lots of company top choosing Sony since they are not making profit, therefor PSP games are limited, though game play will always beat DS.

i'm not gonna lie, i had a DS for a while before getting tired of it. the games that i've wanted to play on the system i've already played for the time that i owned it. afterwards i just stopped playing it...as of right now it's still collecting dust because nothing has really caught my eye up to this poing.
i've pretty much played all the staples...EBA, all Phoenix Wright games except for the current one, Zelda PH, Bleach DS, MPH, Trauma Center, and a few others i'm not remembering for some reason. and after playing those, i just got tired of it.
on the other hand, i'm still very much into my PSP for various reasons. native multimedia functionality for one thing...as opposed to having to purchase an R4 to get multimedia on a DS. easy-to-access homebrew capabilities...i'm a sucker for emulation, especially since my damn brother sold our perfect-condition NES on eBay for a craptastic amount of money :cussing:
plus now there are 2 high-profile games to look forward to on PSP...among the generous amount of games already out, and while i agree that there's a good amount of ports, i still enjoy them because i keep an open mind about that kind of thing. just the thought of playing a game, that was previously on a console, on a portable system is awesome.
apologies for my rambling :p
I have to say DS I have a PSP to but I gave it to my little bro at first I loved my PSP but it got really boring after a while and its also kinda bulky, thats why I think the DS is a little better more fun games and I don't get bored of it easily.
