Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3)

Now, iv'e heard alot about this game and seen many trailers for it.

The 4th MGS is coming out some time in 2007. Many people have been dicussing and debating about whether this is going to b the last MGS game or not.

I personally think that this game will be the last in the series and the creator will move on to another game.

The reason I think this?

Firstly, Snakes age has been speeded up because he was a clone of Big Boss, so in this new game he seems to be a lot older.
Maybe he won't be alive for the next mission?

Secondly, in the videos I have seen on Youtube, the are hints everywhere that this is going to be the last game of the series, including a scene of Snake preparing to commit suicide, ie putting a gun in his mouth.

Lastly, The idea of having another game after all the hints of this being the last game in the series would be stupid. I don't think the creator would be that stupid ^^

You bring up a lot of good points but I'd just like to play devils advocate for a while :winking56

1. Kojima said MGS3 would be his last game, then Konami "persuaded" (probably with bags of money) him to make a 4th. For this reason I don't think it's entirely impossible of there being a 5th.

2. As you said Snake is rapidly aging due to foxdie. Although as we don't know how the plot pans out its only pesumed he'll die. Personally I'm expecting some kind of aging cure/reversal near/at the end of the game.

3. There could always be future MGS games that don't have Snake as the main protagonist. You could have more Raiden based games (although generally shunned in the West he's a big fan favourite for female Japanese gamers) or entirely new characters. Also look at Portable Ops/MGS3, both are set before MGS4, meaning more prequel games aren't entirely out of the question (such as the games covering time span between MGS2 and MGS4).

4. Existing trailers can be misleading. I don't know if you remember the MGS2 trailers but everyone assumed Snake was the main character on Big Shell, but it turned out the character model was slyly replaced so people were suprised with the finished game.

5. Although currently Kojima wants to lead each MGS project, in the future he may allow someone else to continue the story.


Despite all this, I would like to see a conclusion to the series (with MGS4), all the cliff-hangers pain me. I need closure :sad:

It wouldn't be the first time they made a game that didn't involve snake at all. And I also agree with Static Clarity about the possibilty of a prequel. I think it would be pretty cool if they picked up right after MGS2 and let you see some more Snakes inbetween MGS2 and MGS4.

For one thing Kojima wasn't persuaded. It was a hoax like he aways does. He even said the next director will be a Alan Smithee. He aways misleads everyone so that scene with Snake pulling the trigger can also be a hoax. And if you think about it Raiden can't really be the main character because now hes a cyborg ninja so they'll have to change evrything that is MGS and make an action game because if you play as a cyborg ninja that what it will be. Maybe Snake will die. Maybe not now but maybe later. He has to anyway. Who knows. They might even make a Solid Snake clone. We are talking about Kojima. He combines history with cyborg ninjas and Vampires amd clones. Anything can go in his next game.

Unfortunately, some eagle eyed people have spotted that its probably a mask (facemaker style, like mission impossible). So no young snake after all. Still looks to be shaping up nicely, perhaps one of the better reasons to want a PS3 atm :)

Perhaps there will be more mgs "side" games and all that but i firmly believe this will be the end of the mgs plot as a whole and im pretty sure Snake's dying on this installment.

As for what i expect? pure ownage like always. Graphics SHOULD be awesome, storyline? Its MGS, doubting here is a sin -_-, gameplay should be pretty cool too with perm First Person and third person view, that should provide a nice variety on gameplay. Im kinda worried about the controls tho i've never had problems with them (not even on MGS3 and its dreaded sensitive button thingy), dont like the idea of using the sixasis too much and having to forcefuly use the sixasis to do x thing on the game might prove to be annoying. Anyway, this game's one of the reasons i got the PS3 besides GTA, having other ps games and being a fanboy xd

If you want to play a game with a young Snake, get your hands on Subsistence and play the original games, Metal Gear and Metal Gear: Solid Snake. Snake being old in a weird way makes sense, as we first get to play as him in Metal Gear when he was a fresh recruit to Foxhound. We've seen him through MG, MGS1, MGS, MGS2 and now MGS4.

What Kojima did by having MGS3/MPO and MGS2 being about other people is sort of like what George Lucas did with Star Wars, which isn't about Luke Skywalker but ultimately the life, fall and eventual redemption of Anakin.

By having MGS2 and MGS3 about someone other than Snake, it allows us to see Snake in a completely different way. The fact you recognised the difference between Raiden and Snake, on top of Raiden's widely accepted failures just goes to promote Snake more and make him much more. Doing so allows us to see Snake's entire life in a completely new way.

there are so many speculations about each and every single char, who died, who lives. today i still believe that vulcan raven survived the shadow moses incident, and i wanted to see master millers daughter. and more important, who is ocelot talking to in the end of mgs 2 after the credits? how are the philosophers really linked to their us pendant the patriots?! what of olgas child? did raiden save it? did raiden die and is now artificially kept alive to save olgas child? is it another super-soldier program similar to what happened to Frank Hunter aka Null/Deepthroat or most common refered as Gray Fox? Has Naomi her hands in that? Is she jumping sides? Who will betray who? What did meryl do after she left snake? Is the new foxhound paranormal too? (they didn't seem to, from the trailer)

All games are connected so you will probably understand more and maybe even enjoy MGS4 more if you have played them.

MGS4 is pretty much done, they can play the game from start to finish and are now bugtesting the game. Don't know why it would take until June to release it but I guess there are other things that has to be done as well or if they decide to add something in the last minute.

They'r not that long, I beat them at around 12 hours the first playthrough and in about 7-8 the second playthrough.

I don't know if stores still sell MGS1 but maybe they sell old games there, you know that better than me. ^^

Sid anyone else notice in the Beauty and the Beast trailer when they show Screaming Mantis lifting the soldier up in the air you can see that there were strings attached to the soldiers limbs like a marionette... I know its a small detail but its Hideo Kojima's attention to small details that makes good games great...

This is the main reason I got a PS3, for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots! This game has been shaping up to be the greatest MGS of all time and it is finally almost here! (maybe) The release date of any MG game is as infamous as the game itself, I don't think Kojima has ever made his original announced release date with his MGS games. MGS4 has been pushed back at least 5 times by my count, which if it is truly for polishing then I hope this game is the most epic thing ever seen.

Also very excited that the game will come with a PS3 bundle; 80gig PS3, Dual Shock 3 controller, MGS4, and beta info for MGS Online, what could be better!? I first got a 20gig model(i know it's lame but w/e) I have been planning on getting the largest size HD closer to the time when big games like MGS4 and GTA: IV, and FFXIII come out but this is the perfect bundle with everything I am looking for. Perhaps Sony has finally pulled their head out of their @$$?

So I just pre-ordered mine today like I said. But the problem is, I didn't get a MGO Beta code (I didn't pre-order at EB Games) or anything special. Once I got home, I gave EB a call and they said they don't know if they give away a DVD (or anything special) if you pre-order. I can't believe a die-hard MGS fan like me will miss out beta and yes I did get a beta code for the Japanese beta but I don't think I'll be able to participate anymore since people have been saying that they'll be IP blocking anyone outside Japan.

Sucks to be in New Zealand.

I've watched it a few times now (the movie guy's voice is so annoying -_-). I don't think you can really tell from that short clip if it's a nightmare or not but I'm sure it's not a flashback because you see him transform and hear the Octocamo sound while he's doing it. That seems to be the most likely path for MGS... with Raiden. Although in one of the trailers it looks like he his dying(not the vamp one). Although, it may be a rouse to keep the gamer guessing. But if they do decide to make another MGS with Raiden lets just hope that he grew a pair of balls since MGS2. Which looks likely since he looks totally sick as that ninja. Maybe future MGS games will take place as a prequel taking place between 2 and 4. It would really be sad to see snake go.

Yeah in MGS2, the "Colonel" that Raiden keeps in contact with is just an A.I. created by GW - based on Raiden's own expectations of the real Colonel Campbell.

The real one is still alive though and he's seen in one of the MGS4 trailers giving Snake his next mission.

If you haven't been getting along with Metal Gear Solid's blend of neck-snapping stealth and expository blabbering, the fourth (and sort of final) game in the series is unlikely to sway your opinion. CVG reports that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots features 90 minutes of cutscenes and... wait, hang on. It doesn't contain 90 minutes of cutscenes, but rather, alleged 90-minute cutscenes. If your interest or your attention span doesn't stretch that far, you'll probably have a better time watching a Slinky make its way down a short flight of stairs.

Removing the element of sensationalism, however, it should be noted that the article fails to mention where said lengthy cutscenes (which can now be paused) fall within the game. For all we know, they're at the end -- you know, when you're done playing. Even so, this revelation is unlikely to turn away longtime series fans. If anything, we suspect it'll have them even more interested. We certainly are!

In other "Why am I waiting so long?" news, alleged images of a Metal Gear Solid 4 store display box have surfaced online, showing a required 4.5GB installation. We've requested comment from Konami.

I personally don't mind. I know some casual gamers or people new the series may get impatient with 90 minute scenes. I always loved the fact that Hideo Kojima really put an effort into making the story complete as oppossed to some games that simply say... "Congratulations You WON!" when you beat the game... Looks at Ninja Gaiden. But yeah... I'm just hoping they'll be proper cut scenes rather than 30 minute codec conversations like MGS2.

So, what i now understand

Snake was sent by the patriots to Shadow Moses? to destroy Rex (or not?) and to get rid of the rebels

Liquids goal on MGS was to obtain BB's body to find a cure to his body's rapid aging due to being born from 50 yrs old genes.

I really dont know what was the second goal of Liquid, something about surpassing BB, who knows how.

He wasn't with nor against the patriots, Patriots nonetheless decided to kill him, foxhound and the genetic soldiers by sending Snake as a vector for the foxdie virus.

Now, I think foxdie is pretty straightforward name,to kill the rebel fox members. Now im unclear whether the patriots aimed to kill the arms tech and darpa chief or if it was Naomi's work when it was mentioned that she modified the virus on last minute.

Im also unclear about whether or not Foxdie is taking some kind of effect on Snake (and Liquid since they are twins), they didn't died but Naomi wanted revenge against Snake for killing Gray, so is Snake taking a toll or not? Or was the virus modified for activating on some random time or when something happened to his body or whatever? (i guess i'll get the answer on mgs4)

Anyway, Ames is with the patriots and he does something by the end of MGS1 that I dont remember xd. I do know that he "betrayed" the patriots by giving optical disks and info to MGS1 weapons girl. Dunno why he was still alive on MGS2 and still part of the patriots keeping an eye on the president..

The tanker mission was a set up to try and get rid of Snake's hero fame (for who knows what reasons). Hence, explaining the random Navy?/Army? Cypher

Ocelot is with the patriots at least till the end of mgs2, thats why he is on the tanker and says something about taking it back (to the patriots -_-).

Im still at the middle of MGS2 replay, my memories of the ending of the game are really fuzzy. Something about everything being a simulation or whatever >_<

The Patriots wanted to frame Snake as a terrorists to get rid of his fame as a hero(They succeeded) . This made Snake an international wanted criminal. So it doesn't matter where he goes he is a wanted man. The Patriots want to get rid of Snake, because the Patriots want a hero they created(Raiden)

Solidus has the same ideals as Snake, Raiden, and Otacon concerning the Patriots. Solidus just has a different way of going about it. Kinda like Magneto(X-men)

There are about 5 different ways to play the game (regular playthrough, supporting PMC's only, supporting friendly soldiers, killing both sides, FPS only) and then there is all the actual secrets like different cutscenes (which gave reason to play MGS3 like 4 different times to see the Raiden stuff and the Ocelot endings) and possible endings plus doing things differently and finding weapons as opposed to buying and so forth and then there is what they could do with dogtags (or something similar) and replays if you want to collect them all.

I plan to whore out MGS4 so badly with replays and yet they gave it a 9.5 screwing up a perfect score.

Yeah, it had good graphics and the whole cinematic feel of the camera while running was cool the first couple of times you do it but I didn't get why people cream their pants when talking about the game. I felt it was little repetitive and the story wasn't that great.


Yeah, there are a bunch of spoiler vids out on youtube... Heheh, see my last post in this thread. I've read a bunch of reviews already for MGS4... And the common theme is the story is great and it ties up most loose ends left from earlier games. I seriously can't wait till this game comes out.

I will be at my local EBGames to pick up my pre-ordered Limited Edition MGS4 at it's midnight release and if I can I will be getting the 80gig Bundle with the standard edition of the game as well. If not I will get the bundle later that day somewhere else. (I have a horrible 20gig Ps3 and need to upgrade anyways.) I've been a fan of the MG series since MGS1, I am currently playing MG1 for MSX for the first time in preparation for my long awaited MGS4!

As far as MGO I tried out the beta and it was spiffy enough. I mean it's Metal Gear... online, nothing more nothing less. I think though, with the way the game industry is going, most mainstream games will have an online aspect to them. What people need to prepare for is that not all games will be primarily online. Both developers and gamers will need to understand the new era of online games will be as variable as the single player ones of their hayday. MGO wont be as big online as Halo, CS, or CoD4 but that doesn't make it's online game play inferior.

That was my point. Online gaming in the future will need to not be standardized or held in comparison with other online games. (Regardless of slight differences they will) MGO is more similar to Cod4 or Halo rather than WoW so it will no doubt be compared to the games i mentioned. So my point was that even though the user count in MGO will be lower then Cod4 doesn't make it a failure, and this is something developers and gamers will need to realize now that we are entering the online gaming age.

I read about the game having to install a 2-3 minutes bits of data before every act (sorta like... internet cookies?), and that it needs to be re installed if you replay the game because the data of the acts get deleted after finishing each one of them.

To me, thats a little disappointing (if it is true). True, having 5 discs of the same game is worse than waiting 3 minutes for install, and it is something minor, but still... =\

Holy crap. I put the game in at like 9 last night and turned it off at like 4 am. This game succeeds on almost every level possible. I love how they managed to make Naomi and Campbell look like even bigger ass****s. The only thing I really dislike are the load times. Considering we have to install it for three minutes in between acts and eight minutes at the beginning, why are there so many load times? I would've preferred it to just have an act per disc and swap discs. This doesn't seem to support the Blu-ray argument.

I just beat the game for a second time, this time doing a no kill/no alert game. It earned me Stealth and Bandana (as if anyone would save up 10 million DP) and the Solar Gun.

I honestly expected some of the boss battles to be harder but considering i'd already beaten the game before I had an idea of how to do things and it worked out well.

As for the game, I love it. On my second playthrough I went around killing as many people as I could with the knife; I didn't get any alerts and at the end I got the Assassins Emblem and now I have Altair's costume that was shown at april fools. Now for that Big Boss Emblem...

Well considering all the games can be beaten perfectly under 5 hours even on the hardest level it's not surprise that it seems sort. Most of the games are like that. I can get through MGS2 and MGS3 fairly quickly if I'm not worried about killing people/

When I first played the game, I thought the gameplay was short. My original time was 21+ hours, but it wasn't until I tried a no kill/no alert game that I saw how long the game was because although I did it with no continues, no alerts and no kills, I had to keep constantly reloading my save because some guy kept appearing from nowhere and saw me. Even playing like that, my final time was 7+ hours officially but it took much longer because of all the reloading and such. I probably could have done it quicker but there were just times when you have to hide to make sure you don't get an alert (especially during Octopus and Wolf) so you end up just waiting and time adding up.

The secret organisation thing is an old conspiracy theory though, so no surprise it would be done again. In a literal sense, the Patriots aren't real but when you look at how things are today, all Kojima did was make a group responsible for it.

Politics, news, war, big companies are the ones making profit from it by supporting certain aspects of the US government. Big companies aren't specifically oil or weapon companies, but any big company that funds election campaigns by planning to get something out of it.

As for the woman thing, well MG as a whole has been known to reuse quite a few ideas.

From what I can tell;

There are none. Zero was the last the of Patriots, since both the DARPA Chief Donald Anderson (Sigint) and Dr. Clark (Para-Medic) were killed during/before MGS). It's also possible he was the last of the Philosophers as well (otherwise how did he know about them, the Legacy and whatnot to create the Patriots in the first place?)

Zero, the last remaining Patriot created four AI's to control carry on his will, with a fifth system connecting them together, so in essence they were the Patriots. It also seems that these AI's, specifically GW was responsible for MGS2 however it's not possible to place all the blame on GW as Ocelot may have still been a Patriot at that time along with Eva and a fully alert Zero) up until the point where Zero turned to a veg, Ocelot went nuts and Eva left to help recover Big Boss.

The actual human factor was just carried out by agents, or proxies as they were referred to, similar to how Eva, Ocelot and The Boss and Drebin used to be

This backstory is something that will have to be explained, possibly in a future Portable Ops game as Portable Ops seemed to be about their creation while MGS seemed to be about stopping them

From the ending it looks like the 5 A.I.'s are, in essence, neutral. Sunny/Naomi/Emma's virus wiped out the part of the A.I. coding that controlled the SOP system and perpetuated the war economy. Now the A.I.'s are only regulating the most basic of society's needs. And it wasn't just America, the Patriot's system was poised to take over the entire globe. Good stuff.

Also, Snake can't be the main character unfortunately. According to Naomi's tests, Snake has approximately 6 months or a year to live. I could see him making a little cameo appearance in the next game shorty before he dies though.

I got Tarantula. Don't remember my kills but Tarantula=250+ kills. Stats - 57 alert phases and 1 continue etc... Its all I remember. :S

1. Turn your PS3 off from the switch at the back.
2. Hold the eject button.
3. Turn your PS3 on from the switch.
4. Watch the magic happen. :) It'll take a few seconds and it will be loud but makes your PS3 run better.

No, I still got the 60 Gig. Holding over a year and this has never happened. So....this is the game that does it. I'm not worried...it just overheated due to constant playing and 30 minute cutscenes.

The fact Raiden is more normal gives him a reason to be in new games, as he'd be more like him old self since we don't know what this new body can do.


But they aren't the only agents of the Patriots. Drebin was the only we know of in the game, but Snake was re-injected with FoxDie so either Drebin lied, or the other Agents we've not seen (such as those in the medical corporations) did it.

Finished the game twice now, first run through was pretty quick game play as i wanted to see the story before it was totally spoiled all over the net. Second time through was my "Mantis" Rank play through with 0 alerts, 0 health items, 0 continues, and under 5 hours of game play. I was going for 0 kills as well but somehow a couple of soldiers got killed by me in act I, probably casualties from something blown up nearby. Still got the Solar Gun, Stealth Gear, Drebin Face Camo, and Beauty/Beast Face Camo's. Anyways, playing a third time through to get the Altair disguise as well as the FoxHound rank on Big Boss Hard.

Only hint is to play MGS the way it was meant to be, Stealth. No damage = no health items needed. Health is regained if you just chill out so if you can find a safe spot to just sit and wait till life goes up take the time. Only a few situations really prevent you from doing this. (i.e. Big Mama getaway Act. III)

I didn't find health items to be a problem only killing, i was very careful not to kill anyone but still managed to get 2 kills before Act I was over!!! Not only do you have to non lethal take down but you need to like... take special care of the enemy like a triage service or something!!!?

Best tactic is probably to use smoke bombs especially at stopping points, if you have the solar gun it's probably the fastest "stun" weapon you have. And the flier things dont count as kills so just shoot those with a shot gun. Also for a good non lethal take down stock up on V-Ring shells.

Probably the hardest thing about the Big Boss emblem is the time constraint. The B&B fights take up a bit of time, excluding Mantis which is the easiest in my opinion. Midtown infiltration is also a pain, seeing as how on Big Boss Hard and The Boss Extreme the Resistance members take a longer route.

Also, on the motorcycle area, 1 tranquilizer dart instantly stuns any person. Including FROGs.

Healing items shouldn't be an issue if you raise no alerts.

On that note, I believe on The Boss Extreme, you can only hold a small number of Tranquilizer darts, emotion bullets included, and you can't buy any from Drebin.

I mean you can't buy any Non-Lethal ammunition, which is the only kind that matters for the emblem. I believe that you can only hold 50 bullets in the tranquilizer pistol. Not sure how much in the Sniper.

The MGS1 FaceCamo doesn't need to be unlocked, it's given to you automatically once you reach a certain part of the game.

As for the Big Boss Rank, If I know whether or not the solar gun is a special item, I'd probably be more willing to give it a try. The limited ammunition thing is a problem and if I get screwed over, the solar gun could be a great help, especially against the bosses.

It's only 5 million once you beat the game, however if you are able to do a No Alert play you get stealth for free, and if you do a No Kill game you get the bandana for free. That's how I got them.

I think you can do the no kill/no alert think on Easy, but I did them on Solid Normal, so I;m not really sure.

I think you can use the Solar Gun, the only things you can't use are the Bandana and Stealth I think. I'll check back a little later when I find out. I think you can hold 50 of the Tranquilizer darts and 50 of each Emotion bullet. If I'm right, then that's really 250 bullets, but some have some amusing side affects.

I wouldn't think it's impossible. I think that you can get any type of ammunition from rebels.

The Solar Gun can be used on The Boss Extreme. You can actually use it to hit soldiers and bodies to drop Tranquilizer rounds. Unfortunately, it's very loud, so you should only use it if no one is around...
