This book by William Golding has to be one of the best pieces of literature I've ever read. This book deals with the age old question of whether man is inherently good or evil through it's allegorical references, character development, and excellent symbolism and themes. Has anyone else read this book here?
I read it twice, once in my youth and the other while killing alot of time in the service. I have to say it is one of the most profound pieces of literature that attempts to describe the darkness of the human heart. I loved it and would recommend it as good read for anyone.
Oh and i give you my 1500th post.

^ sweet!
My favorite character in that book had to be Simon. He didn't talk much but through the environment and his actions Golding created a powerful religious figure in simon who happnened to meet a tragic end in the story.
This book really shows just how corrupt the human heart can be as they were only 3 people on the side of good and the rest went to the other tribe where they killed, and stole from the other tribe to survive.

I've read this book three times and loved it. It really is a fantastic story, and like you said it has great symbolism. In high school we had to write an entire paper on the different themes and symbolism. I think it really shows how the animal instinct can take over in harsh situations if one isn't careful. Ralph seemed to be the only character to keep his wits about him throughout the story.
Read it this summer.
I'd say something insightful and smart about it, but I'm totally biased. I hate small children and I can't believe I got through the book. I can't even begin to consider the thought of a return to a more feral nature of man, since I plainly stop at the blatant idiocy of those kids.
God, it pisses me off.
Other than that, I really have no complaints about the book; I can't say I enjoyed it, though.

Awesome book. It's been about a year since I read it, but something still sticks in my head about it. Mainly, the fact that you could get so many......allusions to other elements of the human psyche and human nature, not just what you found on a....cursory glance at what's underneath the book.

I had to do an essay on it 4 years ago :( But otherwise the book was good :)
Piggys my favourite character....hes just the definition of emo >_> Lol poor guy :p
I read it when I was in grade 8 as it was required due to a school project. We also ended up seeing the movie that was made of it.
It's an interesting concept on the knowledge that when faced with our own mortality we tend to descend into savagery and basic human instinct of Alpha male etc.
It's also interesting to note that the boy ends up crying not for the slain pig but for the loss of the boys last remaining sense's of Civilized humanity which they had set out to set up when they found themselves Stranded.

and The Lord of the Flies is the same when you are forced to read a book you cannot enjoy anything the author is trying to get across.. maybe thats why i hated it soo much
anyways i have never gave that book a second chance.. should i ?

Ohh! I absolutely LOVE Lord of the Flies. It's probably the only book of literary merit I love. My favorite characters are Ralph and Piggy. (I'm a sucker for protagonists). I nearly cried when Piggy died. :<
And yeah, there are two film versions of Lord of the Flies. A 1963 and a 1990 version. The 1963 was British and very true to the book, but the 1990 had its charms. It made it very modern and fun. And the boys were American.

Lol. I just finished Lord of The Flies in my english class. Didn't really suit my tastes, but I still found some questions in the book very interesting.
If I had to pick characters which I liked, it would be Simon and Piggy. I loved the way they are not very well-liked, but are actually the ones who perceived the truth. I also enjoyed the irony Golding created by killing both characters.
Really? i liked simon but my favorite character was Ralph. his bravery at the end just amazed me to no ends. If i were in his situation, i don't even know what i would have done... he was really courageous/intense/awesome by the end.
