I remember something in the anime where two Shinigami were arguing and one said that the other had no energy because he smoked all the time, then Kenpachi, Ikkaku, Yumichika and MakiMaki run past.

For some reason I thought Iba smoked as well, can't remember any time when I've seen him though.

That's a good question but I'll answer because it's quite simple... The citizens of Soul Society are soul from living world... They don't have to make babies because statisticaly 1 human dies in every 0,35 second... so that's Soul Society won't just run out of Souls ;-)

it may NOT be so simple, actually. If you think about it, the noble houses don't normally adopt,they try to keep members of their family blood related, which would indicate that shinigami women would have to give birth to their children, so there has to be SOME baby making going on SOMEWHERE in soul society

Doubt what you just said 454casull... Probably the existence of real families is because a member of the family dies, those in SS go look for him/her and take them in... Making babies is a bit farfetched as Taurus mentioned... If people in SS can make babies then this will mean a real person in the human world will die in exchange for that... Besides think Mayuri... Nemu is his daughter but he created her using wierd scientific experiments... So I guess this only proves that 'natural' baby making is out of the question...
Now back to topic... Someone smoking huh? Well as someone already mentioned I think I can see Shunsui relaxing back with a cig in his hand... Iba is another possiblity...

Dude! The soul society should realistically be WAY too overpopulated with people dying every few seconds, and the fact that folks age way slow. If they made babies too, could you imagine how disgustingly crowded it would be? I couldn't. :eek13:

On that note, at what rate do people actually age in the soul society? Rukia and others grew up, how the hell does that work when you're dead?!

I don't remember what Ep it was, but after Ichigo fought with ikkaku and was looking for Ganju, the shinigamis who spotted him were like 4 r 5 crackheads from the 11th squad who were smoking pot
