I really liked both of those books; I also really enjoyed David Copperfield. There is a reason why his books are classics, the language and plots are great.

School has a way of ruining good books doesn't it Pyramus? Honestly if I hadn't been required to read Steinbeck or Hemingway in high school I might actually like them, but as it stands I don't like anything written by either of them. I generally prefer English authors such as Oscar Wilde and Dickens as far as classical literature goes.
actually, i read steinbeck in school and i loved it. it was an independent reading thing on of mince and men. i love that book.

... mince and men...
rofl...
Personally hate dickens... there is far too much extra flambouyancy to his writing that simply isn't needed, he's gone out of his way to try to use language to impress people and to try and make himself look superior to other people its bs...
hate!
ahah mince....well
i would go back and fix it
but then again,
i wont. too lazy
you really hate dickens? his stories are so good, though!
you know who's flowery in her writing? JANE FREAKING AUSTEN.
i swear, half the words in pride and prejudice were absolutely unneccessary

Don't get me wrong though, my favorite authors aren't classical English. It'd have to be between Stephen King, J.R.R. Tolkien and Anne Rice

I was required to read Great Expectations for school....I honestly thought it sucked that I had to trudge through...what was it 18th or 19th cent. english (correct me if I'm wrong). It was a good plot and an overall good story, but at certain points is just seemed so...pretentious maybe is close to the right word.
