Michael Moorcock , is my favourite writer. I've read many books about fiction , and I can say that he is by far the best imho. He doesn't follow the stereotypes set by J.R.R Tolkien or any other and his works are unique.
The Eternal Champion , is a hero who exists in all dimensions, times and worlds. He is the one who is chosen by fate to fight for the Balance; however, he often does not know of his role, or, even worse, he struggles against it, never to succeed.
~
The main character of the Saga , changes occasionally from book to book. Some of them are Corum Jhaelen Irsei, Elric of Melniboné and Dorian Hawkmoon. All of them are opposites to the cliché protagonists of Moorcock's time such as Conan the Barbarian.
For example , Elric is a weak albino noble , heir to the throne of Melnibone who must use medicine in order for him to survive. His powerful magic is unrivalled , as is his skill in combat when he wields the demonic sword , Stormbringer. Weak as his is , he must cling to the swords spirit more than often to survive. Many times throught the series , the sword 'betrays' Elric , and in his bloodlust he kills friends as if they were enemies, in a rather tragic way.
~
Moorcock created 3 dominant metaphysical powers in his novels. Law , Chaos and The Cosmic Balance. A non-ending war is fought between Law and Chaos in every dimension of the multiverse. When a force gains the upper hand (for example , Chaos has destroyer Law almost completely in Corum's dimension ) the "Eternal Champion" , unaware of his role most of the time , brings Balance to the world.
~
I find Moorcock's worlds very fascinating. His way with the words is amazing. I guarantee that if you read a book or two of his , you will become fans. He is unique.
I reccomend you start of with reading Corum's first trilogy of books
*The Knight of the Swords (1971)
*The Queen of the Swords (1971)
*The King of the Swords (1971)
