She sashays across the room, her lengthy hair whipping across her face and long legs seem to go on forever.
"Go on, talk to her and get over with it or this pathetic state you're in will never cease," said my co-worker Henry, who roughly brought me back from my day dream and i returned into my small cubicle where i was supposed to finish my work for the day.
"Don't rush me man, it's hard enough as it is without you breathing down my neck every time i see her," i snapped back furiously as we both watched her walk into the elevator and once again, out of my life.
Her...a woman that is the temptress to any man but, yet somehow, she is delicately refined and withheld. She is a lady, worth every moment to feast the eyes and tease the senses. Shy and yet confident, i have watched her come back to Sterling's every month for the past two years, the place where i am employed to basically clean up the mess that everyone else does. How could someone like me actually have a chance with a girl like her. I am but a simple guy, something she can find a dime a dozen and yet, i still want to believe that i would stand some sort of competition against everyone else.
Everyone in my floor knew about my 'secret' crush and tried to give me all sorts of advice, which just manages to drain all confidence and self respect i had left.
"Bring her flowers, pretty ones," said Joanne, someone i knew for a few years in working at Sterling's but still, i felt uncomfortable discussing such matters with them.
"No, not flowers. What you need is some sort of high tech gadget, like an i-phone or something, you know and then you can give her your number and then...Bam! you're in." Micheal said encouragingly. He was a kind of a small time model, so he usually got alot of girls around the area.
Yet through all the advice and heated debates on how i could score, I got up and went home, feeling lower than a snake's belly-button. I got off my bicycle and went inside, feeling relieved to be home and without any more incidents that could embarrass me further. i kicked off my shoes, took a shower and quickly jumped into bed, my body needed some rest from all the excitement lately and all the work i've been getting was really taking its toll. A good night's sleep ought to get me in fighting shape again for tomorrow.
I counted down the days as they snailed by, leaving more and more anxiety each day that finally went. It wasn't just me though, everyone else was anxious to see what i would do this time, although i think that they have finally given up on me completely but it was still something to look forward to.
The day had arrived, the twenty fifth day of the month. Her calling card entrance at around two or two thirty and always uses the elevator, since it was at the back of the floor and so everyone's attention would be caught by the familiar 'ding' and the opening of elevator doors.
I hurriedly finished my work that day, though i would be terribly scolded for the job i did, since my mind only drifted to her when i tried to concentrate on the complexities of the computer chip. Constantly looking at my watch as though i had a glitch, i waited with baited breath as the time read two fifteen.
Sweating profusely and hands clammier than the oysters i had for lunch, i gazed at the elevator as the time read two thirty. Then two fifty, three, four...I was confused, she had never been this date before. I got up and went outside for some fresh air to cool the dragons that was now squirming inside my stomach.
i lit a cigarette and pulled deep, wondering where on Earth could she be. i strolled absent minded down the street, my mind coming at ease. Then in a dark alley, i heard a strained groan. I looked curiously, thinking maybe a drunk fell or something when i saw long blonde hair streaked with red and someone lay face down in the ground. The cigarette dropped from my lips, and i rushed over and turned her over. She stared at me with droopy eyes and a bloody lip. I was stunned, my lady, my dream was before my eyes with blood streaming from her forehead.
"Help me, please...," she whispered weakly and i held her close, holding back a rush of tears that burned my eyes.
I didn't know what to do, what to say. Here she was, she had spoken to me and i held her, the very things i had wished for so long and yet, fate had tricked me. She was dying and there was nothing i could do to stop it. She had lost quite a bit of blood as there was great pools of it next to her where she lay. Her face getting whiter, her skin colder and i was beginning to panic as i began to comprehend what was happening in front my face. I lifted her up, skin slippery from the blood and hurried to the office where was the safest place to go with a dying person, in my opinion. So i burst through the front doors, and causing a ruckus as everyone there saw all the blood and began to scream. The front desk clerk quickly called an ambulance and then came at my side, looking as pale as yesterday's oatmeal.
"Get me some cloth and water," i said, sounding more confident than i really was.
He hurried off, leaving a circular crowd around me with their prying eyes. I looked at her face. Her eyes was closed and her skin felt very cold. I lowered my ear to her mouth, to hear her breathing but she wasn't. I didn't know what more to do, how to bring her back. I just sat there, looking at her bloodied image and wondered how such a tragedy could happen, happen to me.
Soon after, there was the resounding siren of the ambulance which finally arrived. Two paramedics rushed out the front seats and brought a stretcher from the back. They quickly hoisted her on it, strapped her in and set her in the back. They revved up the engine and away they went to the hospital. I decided it would be best to go home, i couldn't stand all the interrogations and questions about what had happened.
I lay in bed for days, just thinking about that day. My eyes still saw the red that had covered my world and killed my ambitions. I had lost all hope of life, when she died she took it with her since she was the missing pillar. And i didn't even get to know her name....
My lady i shall join you, in your quest to the open universe. I shall follow you, watch over you and protect you in death since i could not in life. So wait for me my lady, for i am coming.
"Did you hear about Shinobi, Shinobi Tres? He committed suicide two days ago. When the mailman came to drop some letters, he smelt something terrible coming from the house, so he informed the police. When they went in they saw blood, body parts everywhere and strangely enough they found a message written on the wall. It said 'Life had betrayed me, so i would betray death and remain with Her forever'. Weird huh? i guess he didn't see in the news that she had survived, the lady he saved but i guess she will always be thankful to him for saving his life. Though in some ways, i guess she took his."
