What's the deal between Kuchiki, Rukia and Abarai, Renji?

I'm quite curious on the reationship between Rukia and Renji... So, anybody here who knows the answer?

Analyzing their past, they were best friends. When she was elected to be taken into the Kuchiki house, she asked Renji if she shoul, giving him the option. Now he's basically kicking himself for doing so, even if it were better for him

So, there cold be romantic feelings from Rukia, there are some on Renji's part, but they are definantly good friends.

I think they both had some kind of feelings for each other but never said anything. Then when Rukia asks Renji if she should accept Byakuya's offer, he says yes, and she says I see. I think it was kind of like him rejecting her in her eyes though that's not what he meant.
Renji then later tells Ichigo that he's always howling at the stars but is to much of a coward to jump at them. I thought that meant that he was in love with her but too scared to say anything.

I suppose there could be some romance between them but the impression I get is Renji is like the brother Byakuya never was to Rukia. I recall back in ep 17 how rough Abarai was with Rukia when retrieving her from the living world. Of course maybe he was putting on a front to impress Byakuya - since he was working for him at the time. And in ep 18 his conversation with Rukia was a bit insensitive while she waited for her sentence in jail. Obviously he regretted all this later on and eventually risked his life to save Rukia, which is the behavior you would expect from a brother trying to protect his sister.
And as stated previously Renji had his chance years ago with Rukia but did nothing. So now that Ichigo's on the scene he needs to back off and "know his place", like the saying goes "ya snooze, ya lose".
Besides it looks like Renji and Ichigo will be allies in the future, I thnk they've gained a lot of respect for each other. So he should be glad for both Ichigo and Rukia if something between them occurs.

I think the whole first meeting (that we see) happened the way it did for the following reasons: 1. She'd been missing for two months and he must have been very worried about her so, finding out she's fine, his reaction was "How dare you worry me like that, I'm going to kill you!" Typical reaction you'd see to say a mother finding a lost child in the store.
2. He's angry that she's committed a felony, that HE had to be the one sent to get her back, and that she doesn't seem to get the seriousness of what she's done and keeps trying to protect Ichigo. Possibly part of his treatment was simply trying to get through to her about how serious her offense was.
3. He does stop her from running to Ichigo so her sentence doesn't get worse.
4. At one point he says to her something along the lines of my next attack will kill you. It doesn't though, neither does his attack after that or the one after that. He could have easily killed her, said he was going to do it, and then didn't. Her only injury, as a matter of fact, was a strained shoulder ( I don't remember there even being any blood). That seems pretty lenient.
5. According to the Manga he'd just been made Lieutenant during the time she was missing so he's probably angry that she wasn't there to celebrate it with him and that she doesn't seem to be noticing now (he mentions something about it in the jail later and she makes fun of him).
6. He is insensitive in the jail but in the Manga she gets upset and he really freaks out over it saying that he was only joking, she responds by telling him that SHE was only joking by pretending to care (she was lying to make him feel better).

I think Renji may have felt that Byakuya, in a sense, stole Rukia and that if he could get stronger than Byakuya then perhaps he could get her back. He doesn't attempt to rescue her at first because he knows it's impossible and there would be no where to go anyway. Later he attempts it anyway because of Ichigo's influence. I still think the important clue is Renji claiming that he was always howling at the stars but to much of a coward to leap at them. I thought that meant he was always pining after Rukia but was to much of a coward to speak to her about it.

You make some good points I hadn't thought of like Renji saying he was always howling at the stars but was too much of a coward to leap at them. That would indicate his feelings run a little deeper than those of a sibling. But I just don't see Rukia choosing Abarai over Kurosaki, even though his heart is in the right place and they have a very established relationship. I'm wondering how Kubo Tite will reconcile this issue. Maybe Renji will die the death of a tragic hero, while defending Rukia, leaving the path to Rukia's heart unobstructed for Ichigo.

Oh my, i hope that NEVERR ever happens. and i doubt it, since hardly anyone in Bleach dies.
I wonder sometimes who Rukia will end up with.. Ichigo or Renji? But I think it would make more sense if Rukia was to stay with Renji since they know oh so much about eachother and they been best friends in the past. Also because they're both Shinigamis and live in SS. Ichigo has other girls who he could pair up with.. well, hopefully not Inoue. But anyways, I'm a fan of both, IchigoxRukia / RenjixRukia. But we'll see how the story goes...

It's after he gets beat by Ichigo. He goes into that whole episode that's a big flashback about him and Rukia and her getting adopted. Then at the end he begs Ichigo to save her. During that end monologue (not sure if it's while he's beggin Ichigo or slightly before) he starts talking about how he's got the "wild dog" dyed into his bones and can never be free of it. He then makes the comment about the stars. In context with the entire episode it seemed clear (to me at least, though I could have been mistaken I suppose) that he was talking about his relationship with Rukia and the mistake he made in just letting her go and be adopted by Byakuya.

Also, two other things I noticed. Renji was under no obligation to visit Rukia in jail. The first time he does it it's his day off and the other squad member he meets is surprised to see him there. Then when she's going to get transferred to the Tower he shows up and personally escorts her over. The guards with her (this is more played up in the Manga) are startled that he went to the trouble when they were just going to do it themselves and thank him for coming. Once in the Tower the guards are downright shocked (in the Manga) when, instead of turning and walking out, he goes and talks to her. It's interesting to note that Rukia is not a part of Renji's squad so he has no obligation whatsoever to see her. One last thing is, as Renji says to Rukia, she is freaking Rukia Kuchiki (however it's spelled). I doubt it ever seriously crossed his mind that she would actually be executed and you can see how shocked he is when Byakuya announces it. He probably thought she'd be restricted to Soul Society for however long or something like that. It's another reason why he joked about it, he was being sarcastic "Yeah, right, you're going to die, sure." I think Renji deserves to end up with Rukia. He absolutely redeems himself (especially in upcoming situations), and I think Ichigo will probably end up with Orihame. Actually, in the Manga she's not nearly as irritating as in the Anime I think. But we'll see, who knows? :)

I think it's feasible that Ichigo and Orihime might become a unit but I hope it doesn't happen. I think there are several good reasons for an Ichigo/Rukia pair up:
1 - Opposites attract, Rukia is a shinigami while Ichigo is a human (one is spirit the other flesh). This is logical since Rukia (apparently) came from Soul Society while Ichigo is from Earth. Rukia is nobility while Ichigo is just barely a Ryoka (much to the chagrin of Byakuya). Rukia tries to demonstrate artistic ability while Ichigo seems to relish ridiculing her drawings (with hilarious results). Rukia takes her mission of assisting wayward souls very seriously while Ichigo (initially) couldn't care less. Rukia is more than a 100 years old while Ichigo is still a teenager.
2 - When Rukia passed her shinigami powers to Ichigo in ep 1 there may have been a more intimate exchange of information than was initially evident. I think it's obvious Ichigo harbors this memory in a special place in his heart since Rukia changed his destiny. In ep 54 when Rukia's thought turned to those she cared about (just before she was to be executed) we are shown a view of Ichigo from behind and his zanpakuto was in the form it was when Ichigo first obtained shinigami powers from Rukia, his sword looked like Rukia's sword. She was thanking everyone but when she gets to Ichigo she's silent. Now is this how Rukia was remembering Ichigo or was this an insight of how Ichigo views himself, just before saving Rukia from the soukyoku (it's not clear and I think a case could be made either way)? The point I'm making is the exchange of shinigami power may have more intimate ramifications than we now know and is something Ichigo holds dear.
3 - In ep 59 Orihime acknowledges how Rukia is a special person to Kurosaki-kun, that she changed his life. And wasn't is Urahara who said (in reference to Ichigo's quest to save Rukia, I believe this was in ep 18) that "love is stronger than steel".
4 - Both Abarai and Kurosaki had to make a decision to save Rukia but when they fought in Soul Society Abarai was soundly beaten by Ichigo. It was then he asks Ichigo to save Rukia, acknowledging he didn't have the "horesepower" to get the job done. This and other hints lead me to believe Renji will back off when Ichigo gets ready to make his move.
5 - Renji is a part of the system that is trying to execute Rukia, while Ichigo has no stake in soul society or it's laws, nobility class, military infrastructure, etc... Will Renji live in the living world with Rukia? I don't think so and it seems staying in SS isn't an option.
6. Not only did Ichigo intervene during the most tumultuous time in Rukia's life but it seems to be shaping up to be the most chaotic time in the history of SS. I think this will provide more impetous for the relationship between Ichigo and Rukia than with Renji. Renji and Rukia have been together for quite a few years yet nothing romantic ever happened. Sure you could make a case for Renji regretting this but Renji should pay the price for not being more aggressive in pursuing a relationship with Rukia, before Ichigo appeared. It's my impression before Kurosaki became a "household name" in SS Renji was more interested in himself, his training to be a stronger shinigami and eventually achieving bankai. Maybe he should have paid more attention to Rukia a long time ago.

I'm not saying Rukia won't end up in Renji's arms it just seems more likely IMHO that Rukia will end up with Ichigo.

I would actually prefer to see Rukia with Ichigo even though I'm not sure that's going to happen. If it does though I'd really like to see Renji be happy too. I'm too much of an idealist I suppose. Maybe there will be a switch and Renji can end up with Orihame. Now THAT would be a twist! :)

Being that there has yet to be any romantic relationship in Bleach yet between any of the characters, I'm doubting that Kubo will ever expand into one. I'm getting the impression that anything romantic will be left ambiguous. I don't think we'll ever see any of the characters admit their love for each other either vocally or physically. We'll all be left to speculate about it on and on until eternity, lol.

Good observations! To anyone who is oblivious about the OBVIOUSNESS of Renji's feelings for Rukia, those are good clues to make them think about. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if Renji didn't end up with Rukia because this is afterall a shounen-ai and I don't think Kubo cares about going into a love-triangle-jealousy thing (although I would LOVE seeing Renji end up with Rukia!*sighhh*) and because she now has feelings for Ichigo (I think that's kinda obvious. Don't you?). I don't really understand how people think Renji's still acting big brotherly to Rukia.

OK so they're Best Friends or were Best Friends but that doesn't mean he can't have feelings for her. The way Renji acts around her and the way he's holding her real tight when escaping (and so many more obvious things) all point to the fact that he is totally in love with her!!! Also, do you guys remember when he's reminiscing about the past (I think it was after he lost to Ichigo and after the childhood story) and we hear the voices of Izuru, Ikakku and Yumichika saying how he should stop trying to approach Rukia and that he should stay away from her and not think about her, and how's it's easier to "tie" something then "tear" or whatever, etc... ANDDDD in episode 46 (when Hinamori calls Hitsugaya "Shiro-chan" in her early academy days) when Hinamori's wondering why Renji went to fight the ryoka all by himself... she wonders if it has something to do with Rukia and then she thinks back to their academy days: *FLASHBACK* Renji's fighting with Hinamori and then fights with Izuru and halts the fight (COME ON would a guy in the likes of Renji HALT a fight for anyone?!?!) when he sees Rukia and (very excitedly might I add) goes to talk to her. I don't know if Rukia feels the same way and I've got my hypothese on that subject but they would have left by now since she's interested in @# Ichigo... But pleaseeee don't say he thinks of her as just a friend because that's @#%^&#. Heck, he might just be in denial! That stupid Renji... too stubborn to admit his own feelings for her.

Anyway, like most people I was long puzzled as to why he was so damn tough with her when he liked her so much. It didn't make ANY sense when I thought about it because one has to admit that he was a MEAN FREAKY BASTARD with her in the beginning when he went to get her with Byakuya. But now I understand. That's just the way he IS. He's the kinda guy who does something TOTALLY out of impulsion and thinks about it later and realizes how stupid he was for doing it but will never ADMIT that he was wrong in doing so. In the academy days, Rukia and Renji started going their seperate ways because A. He was in the advanced classes B. Needed to prove something to all the other high class bastards who didn't think he was good enough to make it.
He started making new friends and drifting further away but Rukia felt more and more alone. I think she was happy for him but realizing that he didn't care about her as much as he did now that he was "popular". Heck maybe she DID have feelings for him at the time who knows. But then when they asked Rukia to be part of the Kuchiki clan, the OBVIOUS hesitation was clear on her part: she didn't want to go and needed for him to say it. But he acted the other way around because ironically he DID care about her and her happiness so much that he put his feelings aside not knowing what the consequences would be. And when she got his response, in her mind, she probably thought he didn't care about her anymore so she moved on, met Kaien, now Ichigo...

I KNOW THIS WAS FREAKING LONNGGGG but if some of you STILL think Renji considers Rukia as just a friend or sister?!?! (EW NASTY) then you guys probably would NEVER know if some chick or dude TOLD you to your face that they liked you and just dismiss it as "No she/he doesn't like me, he/she was talking to YOU not me!!" LOL then I give up on you people!!

But think about this, when someone says "But... thinking back on it now... I might have just been scared..." and that sentence comes after they've reminisced about a person of the opposite sex, I doubt it means to be a better surrogate sibbling or friend. Sheesh don't you guys have hormones....

Your arguments were good but I wonder if you meant that Renji staying in SS wasn't an option. In that case, I disagree because why wouldn't Renji stay in SS. Why would they kick him out, there aren't any reasons why SS would kick him out. Also I hope to God Ichigo doesn't end up with Orihime...

Frankly, I'm pretty sure Renji won't end up with her but all I'm asking is that Kubo make him put up a fight and not just LET her go like he did when she left for the Kuchiki name. He can't just slide out of her life and let #$ Ichigo take her that EASILY that would be pathetic, he has to get jealous and show that he's Ichigo's rival not only in battles but in love as well you know what I mean? Yeah i agree every part of what u said, except I'm not so sure she still got feelings for Renji like that. Well, not intill Ichigo came into her life. But I do believe she did have feelings for Renji, because since Renji 'rejected' her... she was actually. and when she hesitated to join the Byakuya clan; it does kinda shows that she wanted to stay & the obvious reason is 'cause of Renji.

I sooooo agree with you. Ichigo, Rukia, & Renji are like my favouritee character so I'm okay with RenRuk / IchiRuki.. and I hope one of them end up with someone. But, I would want Renji nd Rukia together more because; who else would Renji have, besides Rukia? She's the one he feels for. Like so far, the only girls that he's friends with is, Momo BUT shes with Hitsugaya. And i think, Matsumoto, BUT she'll hopefully end up with Ichimaru. And I think thats all..

renji's love is absolutely growing!! i think so far he care so much for rukia, but hasn't realized that it is deeper than he may think. after seeing rukia's life nearly got taken, his feelings should have grown deeper and deeper...realizing how much rukia meant for him XD i would love to see those two being together...
