We know well, that Zaraki wasn't even a shinigami, when he became a taichou. We know also, that Gin was the 5th fukutaichou. What about the rest of people?

renji was in 11th division and kenpachi was a shinigami when he become a taichou. he was in 11th division before he take that title and evrone in gotei 13 are shinigamis
