TBLISI, Georgia (CNN) -- Russian television Friday showed a convoy of Russian tanks and said they were heading into the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia as escalating tensions over the region threatened to boil into full blown conflict.

The move came after Russia denounced as "aggressive" a Georgian troops military offensive to regain control over the province, vowing to respond.

Russian authorities earlier said several of its peacekeepers died in a Georgian attack in South Ossetia, which borders Russia and has strong ties to its vast northern neighbor, and they vowed not to leave Russian citizens in the territory unprotected.

"The Georgian leadership has launched a dirty adventure," a statement from Russia's Defense Ministry said on Friday. "We will not leave our peacekeepers and Russian citizens unprotected."

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Georgia started the fighting and warned that Russia would respond to their actions.

What do you guys think?
I myself don't know what to say. Georgia's president says this was a pre-planned "invasion", going by his word, I wonder what Russia's thinking >_<

I'm thinking we need Bush out of office, now.

Otherwise this is their squabble. Just by basic politics the only people who will likely know the truth are the parties involved.

What's Bush got to do with this?

As for the issue, if it gets anymore heated then something has to be done. Georgia is an Ally to the United States.

Well as a superpower country, and the leader of "the free world," just about any president we have is going to try and stop two countries from blowing each other up, especially with Georgia being a US ally. WWIII, here we come! Looks like I can't possibly end up bored after Boot Camp, hehe...

I wonder how many Americans read the headlines and were like "OMG the commies are invading us!!"

I was surprised to find out they (Georgia) have the third most troops in Iraq. GG other big countries, a tiny little ex-USSR country provided more troops than you.

I am russian. I was following the news for past few days.
The thing is Ossetia and Georgia had last war in 1992, NATO interfered in that conflict and asked russia to police relations/conflicts between those countries because we know about them best. SO we are following that agreement.
Also Georgia attacked the main city of Ossetia and killing thousands including many russians on friday. Georgia army bombed entire city, then tanks and troops start to killing of the rest, Georgian troops barricaded the houses with families and set them on fire. We answered pleads for help from Ossetia people and send owe troops the very next day. We could not waist time on negotiating.
Also very interesting thing russia captured one citizen of USA that was one of the mercenaries. That is very strange, what killers for heir doing in Georgia? Also why Georgia attacked Ossetia knowing that Russia would attack back? It's leads me to think that there is more going on there that we know, it’s like some kind of conspiracy.

I think you're just another Bush hater. You're all alike. Try and connect him with every problem that comes up.

Russia is invading one of their ex-USSR provinces. What else is new. They do this every few years. Probably is a conspiracy to make Georgia part of Russia again. WWIII? I don't think so.

Sounds like Georgia was counting on the US.

Yes, it's likely. But USA won't do that, because with upcoming elections USA has more important things to do.

Well..... I don't know really what to say. If nobody helps Georgia, I don't see how Georgia can last. But then again, if Russia wants to control Georgia or something... that's not going to be an easy task either. *sighs* Why can't the world put things aside during the Olympics?

Well it's over. We never wanted to control that country. We just talked them a lession not to kill inosent people under protection of Russia.

Yes, they requested the aid of most western nations. They are seeking membership in NATO after all.
