I just finished watching this beautifully done anime!
I want to share it with the rest of you.
This is the plot summary from wikipedia:
Balsa the spearwoman is a wandering warrior, who takes on the task of saving lives in atonement for a past sin. On her journey, she happens to save a prince and is tasked with becoming his bodyguard. And he is going to need one, for his own father, the emperor, wants him dead.
Balsa is a truly wonderful character, in fact this anime is filled with good characters.
She has to protect this prince from his own father who wants him dead, meanwhile the reason that the emperor wants him dead is because of something that has possessed him which is what the main plot line is based around.
One of my favorite characters is Tanda, a medicine seller and doctor that grew up with Balsa and helps her along the way. There is a little bit of romantic tensoin between them.
The anime is the first in the ten volume Guardian (Moribito) series of Japanese fantasy novels, written by Nahoko Uehashi.
The first novel has been translated to English and I'm reading it. Even though it is a children's novel it is a good read. ;)
