Superman, the straight-arrow DC Comics' superhero who hasn't fared so well on screen, is headed for a dose of darkness a la The Dark Knight.
Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov told The Wall Street Journal that the studio will mimic the heavy tone of this summer's successful Batman flick in an attempt to duplicate Dark Knight's box office haul.
"Robinov wants his next pack of superhero movies to be bathed in the same brooding tone as The Dark Knight. Creatively, he sees exploring the evil side to characters as the key to unlocking some of Warner Bros.' DC properties. "We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it," he says. That goes for the company's Superman franchise as well.
That's good news for comics fan hungry for more red meat and dark imagery on the silver screen. Warner Bros. will announce plans for the next round of DC movies soon, according to the Journal, with the Superman franchise reboot, another Batman flick and two other films coming in the next three years. Among the characters who might make the cut sooner rather than later: Green Lantern, Flash, Green Arrow, and Wonder Woman, according to the paper.
I honestly don't see how they can pull off a Dark theme with Superman. Superman supposed to be this glorified world hero giving hope to humanity, whereas Batman isn't that blown out of proportion.
What are your thoughts? Should they make Superman a dark series like his Gotham Counterpart?

Dark superman just doesn't work, he was always the somewhat corny hero who always found a way to do the right thing.
They should find a way to make Superman stand alone as its own series rather than homogenize their movies. A good start to helping Superman stand up to Batman would be to remember to include a fight in the next one.

There's no such thing as a "Dark Knight feel". There's the Dark Knight and then there's everything else.

God... really? The reason why the Batman/Superman duo works so well is that they are so different. To make Superman more like Batman is just a new way for Hollywood to Butt**** the world's most popular super hero.
As if the last Superman movie wasn't gay enough as it is.

Batman always had a dark theme to it whereas Superman was lighter in tone. You can already tell, Batman comes out at night, Superman is your daytime hero :D
But seriously, Batman achieved its dark theme cos of the comics. Superman can try to copy that "dark theme" but it won't be the same cos it won't really be Superman. Superman has a different type of "dark theme" to it in the comics which instead it should try to replicate, not from another comic/movie. That in my opinion goes for all other superheroes
Anyway Joker will kick Lex Luthor's as$ :D

Um.. no.
As ultimate said, Batman always had the dark theme, from the early comics, even to the animated series. Whenever you saw Bruce he shouldered the heavy burdens of being the billionaire who everyone scorned because he was "not upholding his father's name" - yet he couldn't reveal that he was, etc. It became literal, in that he hardly ever went out to fight crime except at night.
Whereas Superman. He flies easily. In a clear blue, bright sky.
The guy is basically God

:cm:
But... this sounds horrible. Superman SHOULD be bright. That's why his costume was decked out in American colours, and Batman got the dark suit.
It sounds terrible.

They need to go with the lighter theme with Superman. As others stated, Batman just has that "dark theme" to him. Superman on the other hand is more well-liked by the general populace and was your typical corny superhero. I know jack about superheroes, but I know that this wouldn't work out for a movie.
Bad move on their part. :\

My thoughts are that if they are gonna take this the way they did with The Dark Knight they are gonna need the same exact director to do that Christopher Nolan....or maybe even Tim Burton to do it. Thats the only way I can see it going in that direction since both of those directors really like to bring the evil side to characters.

I can't see Superman being dark. Look at Superman III. Superman went evil, it was a piece of shit. If they want to do something dark, then there is only one thing they can do...
Zod.
If Zod's not in it, it won't be dark.

Oh god, and now we know how the movie is going to start. Seriously, the only way they can do Superman "dark" is if they focus on the villains, or rather villainn, Lex Luther. If they go into detail his insanity and hatred for Superman properly they can maybe try to get away with a "dark" theme. Still a load of bunk. *Waits in line for the Green Lantern movie*

It doesn't really need a "dark tone" to be successful anyway. For example, Iron Man didn't really have a "dark tone" like The Dark Knight and that movie was still pretty damn good. Same goes with the X-Men movies (X-Men 3 was kinda crap though in my opinion).
i never liked superman as a comic-hero really. it was just not special, sure wearing underwear on top of your clothes is somewhat new but that just doesn't do it for me. batman is different in every aspect, he does not have superpowers and tries to inspire people through what he does. every hero except superman masks himself to appear superior. only superman masks himself to look weak, just like regular humans are.
giving him a dark tone... nah, that just does not suit superman. I'd actually let it rest and focus on other characters.

Superman won't ever be as good as it was since Christopher Reeves is dead.(RIP) We all know how Superman Returns was an epic phailing.

I think its possible...but it's gonna seem forced. Superman was always meant to be the boyscout all american apple pie and sunshine hero... trying to darken that up is, iffy.

Making Superman "dark" is the biggest mistake they could make. Him and Batman are two different superheros, so trying to make one like the other will only seem forced and won't make for a good flowing movie.

unless... they put Batman in it :o
lol drop Superman 2 just do The Worlds Finest (http://dcanimated.wikia.com/wiki/World's_Finest) Live action
would be better IMO just not with a dark element in it.

Actually, I can only think of one way to do a Superman movie "dark." They'd have to re-do the Death of Superman story-line. Only possible thing I can think of.

No. Just no. No need to elaborate further. Darkness, was basically a theme of batman. Superman's theme was the absolute contrary. Bad move.
new superman movie may get dark night treatment only if one of the actors die just like what happened to heath ledger .
btw the last superman movie was really bad and i had some mistakes .

They may be able to pull it off actually... that is only of they put the whole resurrection of Superman of Doomsday somewhere in the fray. Those Superman copies were badass. Especially the on who ended up bieng real who killed the bad guys of I'm correctly remembering.

That doesn't even make sense. How's do Heath Ledger dying AFTER he shot the Dark Knight have relevance in the feel of the movie. If Heath Ledger had lived, it wouldn't have been a dark film? His death may have cast a cloud over the movie, but the performances and script were the same irregardless of his death.

I've never been a fan of Superman, I mean...it's alright, but I'll most likely wait until the movies out on DVD before I even glance at it.

Apparently Superman may get the "Dark Knight treatment" however Brandon Routh (guy who plays Superman in Superman Returns) disagrees.
"I don't know how much darker you want to make it necessarily. You make the stakes higher, you make the villain darker, I think that's a way to do it. But I don't think Superman himself needs to be darker. He definitely has to struggle, how does Superman be a part of the world? And does he have to make sacrifices to be a part of that world? To fit in and what purpose does he really play in the world? Those are all kind of dark places to explore. But, I don't think Superman should ever be dark and brooding, that's not is nature. And that's now what people what to see. Like Brainiac or something like that, a situation when the villain is..."
Apparently the new Superman movie might also be a "three-picture ''Superman'' series" (similar to LOTR) if Warner Bros. agrees with Millar's idea. What do u guys think?
