Lately there have been a lot spoof movies coming out (eg. Epic Movie, Superhero Movie, Meet the Spartans etc.) so I decided to make a thread to discuss about spoof movies (coming soon, present and past ones).

New ones that I know are coming soon are:
Click on titles for more info

National Lampoon's The Legend of Awesomest Maximus (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=48224)
Sci-Fi Movie (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=41774)

What do u guys think of spoof movies? What's your favourite? At the moment my favourites are Austin Powers 1 and Scary Movie 1, pretty old I know but new ones at the moment are pretty crap.

Austin Powers doesn't really count as a spoof movie anymore. It has such a huge fanbase it's a movie of it's own.

I'm really getting sick of these things though. They're just stupid now. The first couple Scary Movies were funny, but now they plain suck. I wish they'd stop making them.

I think spoof movies WERE funny when the idea first came out with the Scary Movie series and then it totally got overdone by all the other movies such as Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans, etc. The joke is killed and now it's no fun anymore.

I agree. I honestly don't understand how people can shell out $7+ to see some of this garbage.

The fact that there are too many around, kinda ruins the whole thing for me.

Not only are there too many, but they aren't providing any new jokes/material either. It's just the same old boring, predictable routines.

The only way they'll stop makeing them is when people stop going to see them :D

That's why many of the new spoof movies suck so much. Meet the Spartans tried to parody as much cultural references as possible and made it so stupid (eg. Shrek, Happy Feet, Youtube spoofs etc.) cos they were barely related to the storyline, they just showed tons of random cultural references for the sake of spoofing them.

Even though Superhero Movie was not a great movie I felt like it actually made more sense than Meet the Spartans cos they weren't just throwing in random cultural references and trying to parody as much as possible.

The only way they'll stop makeing them is when people stop going to see them

Honestly I wouldn't them to stop making spoof movies. Just stop making sh*t ones :D Spoof movies used to be good such as Scary Movie 1 and Austin Powers

Yeah. The first couple of Scary Movies and Austin Powers' films were awesome. I can still watch them now and enjoy just as much as I did the first time round.

This is also correct. If your going to make a goddamn spoof movie, at least stick to the plot and don't just throw random references in here and there.

I haven't even seen Meet the Spartans. I refuse to waste my money (and I can get it for free at work XD).

Walk Hard was a good spoof movie :p

Oh and um the Hot Shots movie was a good one too

I wish they'd stop making these movies though. Aren't funny, etc.

edit: Anything done by Mel Brooks is good too

I don't think people will ever stop seeing them even if they are the ones who think they suck. Spoof movies will be around for a very long time. Hopefully they can think of something knee-slapping hilarious and new so that they wouldn't suck too much. And they shouldn't try too hard. Trying hard makes something less funny. It's better if it comes naturally and easily like joke telling.

I'll put this simple for yall, all spoof movies which don't have Mel Brooks suck epically. (He was in such comedy classics like Spaceballs, Dracula: dead and loving it and Robin Hood: men in tights.)

You forgot Blazing Saddles, that was a Brooks movie too.

Indeed. And most spoofs are pretty similar these days.
Too bad alot of films are becoming like that. Horrors especially. the only really unique horror to come out the last 5-6 years was the Saw series, but even that is becoming old fast.
alot of films are lessening the quality. Why I have my own for a film which is based off a cool old game and the plotline is excellent for a movie adaptation. (It'd also beat disappointments like Silent hill and DOA.

@semp: gomen nasaii. I was only listing a few examples, though it's true I did forget that one too.

Im generally not a fan of the spoof movies of today, but there are a few gems here and there.

I agree with you Malice, the quality of recent movies has degraded a lot. The only halfway decent movies are the ones of redone comics and rehashed ideas. Batman, Spiderman, X-Men, Transformers, Star Wars, etc. The only *ok* movies nowadays are comedy, and half of those have been ruined by terrible acting or stupid jokes. i mean, being jerky is funny, but they take it WAY over the top anymore imo.

I don't think I will stop watching spoof movies even though recent ones have been sh*t. They are meant to be funny and I enjoy comedies so I'll keep watching hoping one day that a good spoof movie will come out again.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights was a great spoof :D

Yeah. The only good movies are from comics or books or remakes. I am not badmouthing the idea of making movies originally from comics/books/remakes (most of the ones I have seen are awesome) but I feel like they need to begin making totally original movies again which they kinda did with Hancock (another kinda recent movie) which was a pretty good movie.

Game to movie adaptions are currently the worst so they need to improve on that too. They ruined things like Hitman, Resident Evil, Doom etc.

Most movies are remakes anyway. Either that or they're movie versions of a book. There have been plenty of good movies that we're comic remakes or sequels that have come out recently, though.

Btw, Spaceballs was quite possibly the greatest spoof ever. I loved that movie.

Yeah Spaceballs is still in my top 3 comedies of all time. (Along with monty python and the holy grail and Dracula dead and loving it.)
"Prepare for light speed."
"Nah light speed is too slow."
"Light speed too slow?"
"Yes. We must go to ludicrous speed."

god i hate these spoof movies of late.

first of all, scripts are awful from the beginning. all these movies are are references to popular movies....and that's it. there is no irony, no clever spin, it's just a reference. and they even explain it thouroughly to us, like we are idiots. ther eis no ambitiousness or vision in these movies, they just reference every popular and semi-popular movie that was out that year. i mean, why is juno and sex and the city being spoofed in a movie that is supposed to be spoofing disaster movies? i dont plan to see disaster movie, but in this one case, i can say its awful without seeing it. i do read reviews, and there is a reason there isnt a single positive review out for this movie yet, it is pure garbage. if your acting career is pretty much dead, you go and appear in these movies since no one else wants you. so we gwt no laughs, no good acting, i wont even mention something like editing or cinematography. there are many spoofs on youtube taht are funnier than these movies. and the saddest part is that people are actually paying for this crap.

/rant over.

It better be good, that's all I have to say. If it's just as stupid as the regular spoof movies, it will serve no purpose.

The spoof movies that need die and be over with are the ones that follow the [insert obvious genre here] Movie and are probably all written by the guys that wrote the last two scary movies (not sure if they've been doing the recent ones, but they did do Date Movie)

Those are the ones that throw the joke right in your face and expect you to laugh. They're the ones ruining the Spoof Movie Genre. :/

The only good "recent" spoofs were the first 2 scary movies which i think were directed by the Wayans brothers? while the others were done by other people. Those 2 are a step ahead of all these other ones. Of course you have the classics like Hot shots and Robin hood men in tights and ones like that.

But meet the spartans? no. it had Hercules in it, that was the upside.

Wow I'm seeing alot of bashing of spoof movies, now I can whole heartedly agree with the fact that Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer should have their head's shoved on a pike on the outskirts of Hollywood. However the problem with those movies is that they try sooo hard to be like Airplane, but they for one thing have the restriction of a PG-13 movie whereas Airplane is rated R, however Airplane had substance to it where as this new shit just references the dumbest pop-culture shit found on Youtube, as well as just referencing other movies that became popular around the time they wrote these pieces of shit. Just merely referencing shit for 2 hours doesn't make it a movie it makes it un watchable. But please don't let these two guys, who have the AUDACITY to call themselves writers, ruin your view on spoof films because there are some pretty funny films out there that fulfill this way of film making, such as Hot Shots, Naked Gun, and of course Airplane.

My view on spoof movies have not been ruined by the crap these guys write (Meet the Spartans, Epic Movie etc.) because you're right, there are good spoof movies. Some I like are: Robin Hood Men in Tights, Austin Powers movies and Scary Movie 1 and 2. Superhero Movie which was not written by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer wasn't that great but it was way better than Epic Movie and the crap spoofs Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer directed which are basically just filled with parodies of cultural references and any other popular movies.

I am still waiting for a good spoof movie. Superhero Movie nearly made it for me but still wasn't that great but like I said its better than the stuff Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer wrote/directed.
