In my way Renji was the best martial arts student from his year, but in everything else he barely did it to pass exams. And he was very lucky, that Zaraki has taken him to 11th division, because if he didn't, Renji would be still an unseated shinigami.

What did when happen?...

When Renji ended school he was taken to 5th division along with Kira and Momo. But when Aizen realized, that he is too rebelious, Aizen didn't want Renji in his plans anymore. For Kira Aizen planned to be under Gin's command, and for Momo, to be under himself's command. There was no place for Abarai... If You meant that.

It's hard to say... In manga it was said only, that Renji was taken there, as far, as I can remember...
But because of plot I think it was no earlier, than 10 years ago.

I don't like Renji beaten up... It looks stupid. Specially by someone, who's so much younger, and has got far less strengh and knowlefdge about fighting...

One thing: Zaraki took Renji into his division 40 years ago. Stated in the Bleach databook VIBEs.

And OT: I think that Renji would "accidentally" switch into Shinigami form because Tatsuki is in danger... and the she would see him... and think to herself: "I like his long sword!!" (hehehe... take it as you see it... XD).

Renji was taken to 5th division along with KIra and Momo 40 years ago.Then He was taken by Zaraki. It's impossible to say when, but basing on Yachiru's age it couldn't have been earlier than 10 years ago.

Change accidentally into shinigami... Usually people thinktwice even in these situations about it. He may just have no choise.
