Is this like a versus battle or should we take this literally?

Yeah I wasn't exactly sure either, but Kenpachi is all about "OMG that dude is powerful and cool", which doesn't exactly appeal to me. In a 1v1 fight, I'd say Byakuya would win fairly easy. Sen-bon Zakura Kageyoshi seems like it would give Byakuya a good advantage over Kenpachi, plus his Kidoh, speed and other things he does. If you mean just the characters in general, I still prefer Byakuya. His elegance and style is what appeals to most people, so he'll probably get more votes either way. Kenpachi is still very cool though.

change my mind sorta. i still like zaraki better, cause he is actuly happy to hear ichigo is alive, he is happy to hear his enemy is alive, its unusual, but its nice of him, even if it is from his selfishness, but byakya isnt all that bad i guess. sorta like sesshomaru. (taht is if what i herd was true and byakya does have a heart for someone like sesshomaru has a heart for rin)

I'd have to say Byakuya because he actually knows the name of his sword :P so he can do much cooler moves like his bankai, whereas kenpachi just has a huge spirit force and a chipping sword. also i agree that Byakuya's elegance and calmness is more appealing than Kenpachi's rough-n-tough appearance.

in terms of character, id have to say kenpachi, hez just cooler and appeals more to me, byakuya is a bit too cocky for me, i mean imagine how bad he looked when fightin ichigo, one second he was like its 100 years too early for you to see my bankai, 5 mins after that he used bankai!!!

Kenpachi as a character he kicks ass, but Byakuya is probably hiding his real feelings even though he did say he didn't have any feelings for blood relations at the end of 59, why would he have that picture of Isana, he probably looks at it a lot but we don't see it like in ep 49 when we see Byakuya in his house, in a fight though (I think Kenpachi has flash step) I think Kenpachi could equal Byakuya but only in sword fighting ability, but he might not be able to seeing after Ichigo beat Kenpachi Byakuya could simply fight Ichigo one handed like he wasn't bothering much, however I think Byakuya would be able to defeat Kenpachi just by using shikai, (I'm sure Kenpachi doesn't know how to fire out spirit force like Getsuga Tenshou because like Yumichika said in ep 52-53 11th squad think any kind of demon magic or anything that isn't simple swordfighting isn't cool) however Kenpachi might still be able to stand and carry on fighting because of his insane resistance to getting cut, but then again ichigo after defeating Kenpachi would've been defeated by it on the bridge in ep 41, and how much you get cut by it depends on how high your spirit force is, and Ichigo's was higher (maybe a lot more) then Kenpachi's, if it didn't work Byakuya would simply use Kageyoshi, and it would be the same as what happened to Renji, Kenpachi is no real trouble for Byakuya, if Kenpachi had his soul slayers name, a getsuga tenshou type thing and bankai it would be different.

actually i think byakuya is pretty honourable in defeat, he accepted ichigo defeating pretty well i think, and ichigo was a merely a human too

Byakuya would wipe the floor with Kenpachi. There's no comparison. His base power is impressive. This means nothing though in light of the nobleman's flash steps and zanpaku-to mastery. I don't think Zaraki's shikai would save him Kuchiki's bankai. It might by him some time like Ichigo's did, but he would still get slaughtered in the end.

Oops, my bad. :redbiggri On the subject of character, I still like Byakuya. He's reserved and calm most of the time which are admirable traits, but he still feels. It takes a lot of inner strength to maintain such composure. He even tells Ichigo that living solely by the rules makes life feel pointless. His rescuing of Rukia was also very nice and his confession as well. I'm not sure what his personality will be like the next time we see him though.

As said previously byakuya because of his calm skill and conceiling emotions. PLus he has a big house..hehe
This constitutes as personality(except house) and builds a nice character who eventually is shown to be quite emotional
kenpachi is just a crazy ass guy who everybody will love. Who wasnt waiting for his fight with Ichigo? Or against two captains? and his skill with the sword...im suprised he doesnt have a shikai as members of the 11th squad also have although they conceal it
what wud win me over is after the individual fights byakuya was still standing and flashstepped away
still zakari is less than 1%behind

I'd have to say, Byakuya would pwn Zaraki. Not off the bat, but it would definitely be a short fight. He's all power and some technique. And we're forgetting, Byakuya's bankai (if needed) would shred Kenpachi to pieces. He may not end in pain per se, but it'd turn out to be a pretty unfair fight.

...and I'm a Kenpachi fan, sheesh...

I would definately choose Byakuya
Reasons: Byakuya is a great and experienced Zanjutsu-pro and he's also good of using kidou's, Byakuya is another word a genius because he's good on the different fighting styles. He's a good bankai holder, not to mention but, he has mastered his bankai as you guys know .. and Zaraki in this case ? hmm naah, he doesn't even knows the name of his zanpaktou. Byakuya is calm and fast in comparison with Zaraki, he's like a beast in a battle ! and as you guys said, Byakuya has a heart after all, it was the promises that made his decisions complicated. Except that, Byakuya has more techniques than Zaraki, like senka for example, I can mention more techniques from Byakuya, but I can't mention any from Zaraki ..
everytime Zaraki is on a battle, he always fight with the death .. He put his life on a game .. But Byakuya doesn't think like Zaraki .. he's more confidence and he also think that he has to be, he's a member of the nobel family. Zaraki would spill alot of blood during a battle, but Buyakuya wouldn't, only if the enemy is EXTREMELY fast like "hollow-Ichigo" and Ichigo for that case. But the paths that I like Zaraki for, is that the wounds don't seems to have any affects on him, like when tousen pierced him .. I was like MAN DIDN'T THAT HURT ? and he's self-confidence ... he speaks like if he will win, like when he fought against KOmamura and Tousen .. "I take back my words, this won't even keep me awake" ahahaha I mean it was shikai abilities .. :S

but the funny thing is in a flash back he had the sword like that
but it does make sense about the shiaki thing
however he needs to master some attacks he can make eg ichigo can do the sonic boom like thing..cant remember the name
but to disprove your theory
the initial sword that ichigo has is considered unusual due to the same reason as his shikai
that simply cud be the case of kenpachi

sorry but I wish everyone would stop saying Kenpachi should have shikai because he does, its a full time release like Ichigo's, he says on ep 38 that his spirit force is so huge that he can't seal it so his full time release shikai like Ichigo's is its real form, Kenpachi's next stage up is bankai, also after Yoruichi says Ichigo has a full time release soul slayer, he says that's the same as Zaraki, Ichigo said his must be a full time release shikai because it was a different shaped sword from everyone elses, so is Zaraki's, they're the only two people in soul society who have full time release shikai's, if everyone just got the name mixed up shikai and bankai sorry XD.

...No he doesnt, Who would you believe somebody that knows shikai and his swords name or somebody who doesnt have NEITHER? For the last time he doesnt have shikai.. Whats the point of asking your swords name after you got defeated? Yea. Well im not going to be biased like most of you are doing and just point out facts. Shikai byakuya will do nothing to kenchan. Kenpachi knows flash step (rewatch the fight with ichigo and kenpachi again if you dont believe me..). Honestly i really dont know who would win this fight cause we have to see them fight and all this stuff is speculation. If they ever fight (yea right) well see who will win.

Let's see...

Zaraki is was beaten by Ichigo's Shikai while Ichigo was a bit higher than vice captain level.
Byakuya would have won against Ichigo's Bankai if Hollow Ichigo hadn't shown up. Ichigo was captain level that time.

Okay, we have Zaraki, crazy berserker with no apparent sense of pain who was once a wandering warrior and we have Byakuya, a cool long-haired guy who barely speaks and fights an inner struggle between two promises he made. Byakuya may seem cold, but he's indeed able to feel love, while Zaraki doesn't even care about his Soul Slayer's name.

Byakuya still wins.

While both Byakuya and Zaraki's personalities have been done to death in several shounen anime/manga's, I still have to go with Byakuya. Theres just something about that calm, collective attitude and secrecy that makes him appealing. I've seen too many characters like Kenpachi as well, but I do admire his lust for fighting, and it seems as though he may find out his swords name after all. Overall I'd say Byakuya wins for me.

A note on Zaraki's zanpakuto, I do not believe he has a permanently released Zanpakuto. We've already seen that first-level Zanpakuto can take nontraditional shapes (Kyouraku, Yamamoto, Ichigo himself), so it's not so far a stretch to think that Zaraki has a 1st level Zanpakuto.

It required Ichigo to know his Zanpakuto's name and call out for it to be able to release its Shikai, and from what we know a Shikai does require knowledge of the Zanpakuto's name. Going by this, Zaraki does not have Shikai.

However, on the other side, Zaraki's immense reiatsu could very well have bypassed that, and simply required his Zanpakuto to be forced into Shikai. However, I find this unlikely, as was pointed out he had his Zanpakuto when he first encountered Yachiru, in that shape, when his Reiatsu was more than likely not that high. And even if it is a Shikai, it's not "complete" in that he doesn't know any of its abilities and how to utilize them.

In any event, the personalities...

Byakuya, by virtue of what he is, falls somewhat flat personality-wise. Obviously there are reasons for this, and I'm not exactly unfond of the stern and calm demeanor, but his extremely, to use D&D terminology, lawful tendancies make him somewhat distasteful. I generally dislike characters that are so bound up in law and duty that they cannot think for themselves. Byakuya isn't completely like this, but he's definitely well-entrenched on that side of the spectrum. I can understand the great desire to uphold the law, but people like Byakuya and Yamamoto who uphold the law above all else - including common sense annoy me greatly.

Zaraki, I think, is a fun character. I like seeing him show up, just because of his wild and chaotic presence, as well as his supreme confidence and bloodlust. Because he's more colorful, you see him doing more things and he generally stands out more than Byakuya. That's not to say that Byakuya, in his own way, does not demand one's attention, but Zaraki's wilder nature makes him much more fun to watch. I especially like his interactions with his surrogate daughter (and the epitome of cuteness in Bleach) Yachiru. It's interesting to see such a wild man with a little pink-haired girl on his shoulder cheerfully misdirecting him. As well as being amusing, it's another facet of his personality that is only touched on but nonetheless poigant. He and Yachiru obviously care about each other, you can see it in their banter and interactions, and I enjoy that very much.

So while I do like both characters, my vote in this goes to Zaraki. Although I imagine Byakuya would be able to defeat Zaraki in a straight fight, though he'd probably have some problems. Were Zaraki to obtain Bankai, on the other hand, that would make it another matter entirely. Zaraki with Bankai might give Aizen a run for his money.

Hey, Zaraki's zanpakutoh isn't a permanent released one.

In both manga and anime, clearly is stated he never even learned his sword's name, so it's really only an accessory and not the common tool every other shinigami has. If anything, it's permanently sealed (fully).

If we r talking about combat style, i would obviously choose byakuya considering his super amazing abilities and all. Behavior and attitude? It's understandable that his cool and calmness are added points compared to zaraki's. But when it comes to the heart, it seems that zaraki has a headstart. Even though his wife is dead and so so, byakuya doesn't have to be what he is- like the part where he doesn't even seem to mind that rukia is gonna be executed and even told ukitake that it is none of his business if rukia died or is killed. What kind of brother is that? It's a little too cold for me. Zaraki's unusual sympathy towards his enemies is what draws my attention, if you get what i mean.

I'd have to say I like Zaraki more as a character, he's kind of insane, and un predictable, not to mention funny. I think byakuya is a bit too serious, almost stuck up, and frankly, aside from when he's fighting, he's a bit boring.

I voted for Zaraki Kenpachi because I like his character. He is a battered and beaten soul who has never known any thing but death in his younger life. I like how he rose from the ashes so to speak and fought his way to being captain of the 11th. Even though he has been through a lot he still manages to save some thread of humanity and act as a father for Yachiru. I think he has more skill then he shows and people to quickly dismiss him as a brute. Lets not forget that when he fought Tousen and Sajin he still had his eye patch on. I do not think he would stand much of a chance against Byakuya, however Zaraki may be able to pull some thing off. I also believe Byakuya is a very interesting character and I can actually identify a little with him. However I still like Zaraki more, but Byakuya is a very close second.

Voted Byakuya, but Zaraki was close. Love Zaraki and his personality, but Byakuya has more of a changing character than Zaraki from the ryoka's apppearance. He used to be seen as cold and heartless, but he's revealing a gentler side to himself (still can't wait until he smiles/laughes at some point in the future). I'm really intrigued to see Zaraki change and as a result, maybe get a Shikai/Bankai, but at this point in the storyline, we've got what we've got.

That`s not the topic.
Kenpachi didn`t master his sword or hear the name of his Zanpakutou at all. He`s strong but he has no techniques to dodge at least the shikai of Byakuya.
If Byakuya`s shikai cut Kenpachi he will lose, for sure. Kenpachi brakes down because of so many wounds.

Character wise, Byakuya is pretty much on the good side while Zaraki seems neutral, living for the sole purpose of fighting. So i'd say Byakuya has a better character.

Skill wise as many of you are debating, definitely Byakuya at the moment. After all, Ichigo barely defeated Zaraki without bankai while barely won Byakuya with bankai. And we all know that bankai multiplies one's strength by 10x.

We don't know if he won against Komamura. We didn't get to see the finishing of the fight.

Byakuya. He's more laid back. He's fighting with finess rather than pure power, Kenpachi does the opposite. That's more appealing to me.

Zaraki Kenpachi is great for the pure comedy value , mixed with his vice I think they could totally get their own spin-off series.

He is just out for fun , got to love him for that ... Its just the fact that his hobbie is fighting that people dont seem to like.

Kuchiki Byakuya is just a another guy.

byakaya will own zaraki... first of all, byakaya is about 100 times faster than zaraki, so he'll never catch up. secondly, while byakaya is avoiding zaraki, his bankai/ shikai will cut him up. even zaraki cant talk 1000 cuts...

There is a small possibility that Zaraki will learn his sword's name, but I'm not counting on it. And even then, by the time Zaraki master's Bankai Byakuya has grown even alot more. Don't think Zaraki will ever master any other technique than just brutal strenght.

I guess Zaraki would win, cuz he can take much more damage than Byakuya anyways, not to mention that Zaraki is a fighting freak that won't give up after a few hits of Senbonzakura.
..and in the fight (byakuya & Ichigo) Byakuya just got extremely weaken after getting hit a few times =.=

Extremely weaken after getting that 4 Kuroi Getsuga from 4 sides at the same time.

well kenpachi is obviously, more funn that byakuya, but he is also strong and he kills for fun... so yes not cool.. .and byakuya is just mysterious... he is the typical tdh guy... making him more loved, and naturally cooler

Kenpachi is a legend. Beats 2 captains, "learns kindness" in ep 63, is 'friends' with Ichigo and is captain of the strongest (and coolest imo) division. But since ep 62 where Byakuya saves Rukia and we find out about his past... I dunno. He's an awesome character; seems genuinely 'noble', looks cool, and fights well. He and Kenpachi are almost exact opposites. But I voted for Ken-Chan ;)

Although Kenpachi is my favourite character, i've got to admit he is outclassed in terms of reiatsu, speed and power by Byakuya. Kenpachi lost to Ichigo when he hadn't learnt bankai yet, however Byakuya put up pretty well unitl Ichigo went hollow. Therefore i've have to say that Byakuya would be the victor if he ever fought Kenpachi.

Byakuya would never overpower or have more reiatsu then Kenpachi. I still find it unfair to compare 2 people without seeing one's true potential (reffering to Zaraki)

We know that Zaraki doesnt have a shikai/bankai, YET. We all know Byakuya using his bankai and getting really powerful, but knowing Kenpachi has an AWESOME level of reiatsu unreleased just wait till we see him using his shikai/bankai when the time is ripe xD

Both are repressed due to their arrogance. Byakuya's arrogance keeps him from showing emotion since its a commoner thing while Kenpachi's arrogance due to his sheer power keeps him from bonding with his zanpakutou. In a Soul Society context, I'd prefer a level headed powerfully well-rounded emotionally-repressed captain over a impulsive brute-force-only zanpakutou-deficient captain.

Personality: Kenpachi wins. His backstory is almost completely unknown. His sword has no name. We haven't seen his bankai. He has unpredictable mood-swings.

Combat: Kenpachi wins unless Byakuya resorts to using bankai. A simple shikai would hardly scratch someone like Zaraki, who shrugs off minor wounds as if they were nothing.

In fact, I think Kenpachi might actually *like* being sliced up by Senbonzakura. However, the bankai form is much more powerful and would likely strip away all of Kenpachi's flesh, leaving tons of critical injuries to his organs and thus killing him.

I *do* think that Kenpachi's reiatsu is probably higher than anyone else in SS except perhaps Yamamoto...but his lack of a bankai makes it difficult for him to compete at times.

We don't even know who the previous 11th captain is. He could've sucked ass for all we know. As for Tousen, his Bankai is ineffective against Zaraki because Zaraki can take a little bit of pain. Byakuya's Bankai, however, will kill you if you don't dodge it.

Another Zaraki fans fail to defend is agility. You can argue that Byakuya's Senbonzakura won't scratch him, but you can't argue with the fact that Zaraki is SLOW. Ichigo in Shikai can dodge him. Ichigo had to use Bankai to BARELY dodge Byakuya.

Oh yeah, it took ichigo THREE times to defeat Byakuya. Ichigo defeated Zaraki the first time. Byakuya owns, but Ichigo is still the best.

Ichigo and Zaraki were both critically injured and would have died without treatment. That isn't victory, in my book.

Zaraki does not have a shikai, or a bankai. He operates purely on his colossal reiatsu (the only other person who's reiatsu was high enough to paralyze someone's body is Yamamato)...and thus IT SEEMS he can be at a disadvantage when you compare him to other captains who can use bankai.

I started a thread called "Bankai is not an I-win button" that discusses this phenomenon.

Suffice it to say...Zaraki is a lot stronger than people give him credit for.

I will agree that he appears to be fairly slow...except HE CAN RUN TWO HUNDRED FUGGIN MPH!!!! He ran aside a bullet-train in one episode.

He may not be an accomplished practitioner of shunpo, but calling him slow is a tad ignorant, imo.

That certainly is your right, but as it stands he is the only Captain who we know (from the anime anyways) has SOUNDLY defeated any other captain, other than Aizen vs ___ (take your pick, lol)...and thus it is a safe bet to say that he has a good chance vs any other captain.

I'm not saying he'd definitely win...I'm saying that among the Captains, he has what it takes to beat most of them. Whether he would or not is completely circumspective.

Remember - to the 11th squad, losing is the same as death. Thus, we can reason that Zaraki, as that captain of the 11th squad...has NEVER lost a fight since he became captain, except in the case of Ichigo...and that was more of a tie than anything else.

I don't care if Zaraki can run faster than a bullet train. The fact that Ichigo can dodge him in Shikai form proves that Zaraki isn't fast enough for a truly powerful Shinigami.

Also, Ichigo and Byakuya's duel was also a tie, just like Zaraki's. Both Byakuya and Zaraki gave the victory to Ichigo. The difference is that if Ichigo didn't use Bankai against Byakuya, he would've lost (hell, he might've died).

well..I've read most of the posts and purely from a character standpoint I enjoy seeing Kenpachi on screen more than Byakuya. While both characters have their own individual complexities, I find the mystery behind Kenpachi to be more intriguing. In the anime it isn't clearly explained all the history behind Zaraki and why he never learn learned his zanpaktou's name. All we know is that he fought for everything he's ever earned. He's worked his @$$ off from the moment he picked up a sword.
While I also enjoy Kuchiki's character (especially the first time he was seen...extremely cool), Kuchiki is sort of limited to the same stereotype as usual of a misunderstood bad guy..with good intentions. I hope he progresses in the manga because I really like his character...just not as much as the wild eyed warrior Kenpachi.

Battle
Well personally I don't think because Byakuya has Bankai that means Zaraki cannot defeat him. It's obvious that Zaraki has beaten a few captains before, and we must assume that these captains had bankai because of the captain requirements. Zaraki's fight with Ichigo also shouldn't be a measuring stick for how strong he really is. Ichigo would be dead now if Zaraki had not toyed with him long enough to pull some more power out of Ichigo. If Zaraki fought at full strength from the begining I don't think anyone could go blow for blow with him...not even ichigo. We must also assume that Byakuya wasn't expecting to fight Ichigo at such a high level..and therefore is probably stronger than what the anime has shown. I really feel that the one on one match ups depend on the two characters involved. And in this case..Byakuya's bankai wouldn't be as effective against Zaraki...it seems to be more effective against characters with a lot of speed. Zaraki is fast but he relies much more on his stamin and conditioning. Personally I believe that this fight would end in either a draw or with Byakuya winning by just a little bit. Byakuya obviously has more skill in the tradtitional terms but no character has more heart or has worked as hard as Kenpachi. I find it hard to believe he would allow Byakuya to win (on his feet). I see it ending similar to the way his fight with Ichigo winning...and Byakuya being pissed that this captain from "nowhere" was able to keep up with him.

Results
A Draw...That reiatsu is so friggin powerful...i don't see Byakuya winning with senkei senbonzakura kageyoshi...i think that the reiatsu may nullify that's effectiveness. I see it more as a fight between theie swordmanship...and I don't think Kenpachi is actually more experienced...but I believe theyd have a great duel. Kidou or no kidou..i see it as a draw. Bankai does not mean certain victory. Tousen lost..11th squad's previous captain lost...Ichigo would have lost if not for Ogichi...

Also, the only real reason why Byakuya gave the victory to Ichigo was because of Hollow Ichigo. If Hollow Ichigo didn't pop up and brutally injured Byakuya, Byakuya might not have surrender to Ichigo.

Considering Kenpachi has ALOT more fighting experience compared to Byakuya. (Byakuya is from a noble family after all... I doubt he was going in the streets cutting ppl up, or had to fight for his life in the way that Kenpachi had to.)

And the fact that Kenpachi's raitsu is so strong, even though he is not fighting together with his Zanpaktou is quite impressive. Imagine what would happend if Kenpachi finally learned his Zanpaltou's name, and was able to gain it's full power, he would overpower Byakuya completely by sheer force.

And I still choose Kenpachi as a pure character.
Since, Byakuya is elegant and noble, but he is from a noble family, so that's a given.
Kenpachi is a "from the street" type of guy. Yet he managed to climb all the way to captain, and he even carried Yachiru with him to the top. Even though he had no reason to care for that child.
So Kenpachi all the way ^^

Heres how i believe the battle would go.

*ahem*

Byakuya starts off thinking he can beat Zaraki with his Shikai ability, and promptly uses it. After he sees Zaraki just walking through it (pain doesnt seem to faze him all that much), he prolly gets a few cuts on him, and retreats back a bit. *insert dialouge about how dangerous he is, and that animals like him should be put down* and the fight resumes, with Byakuyas bankai being released.

Now, if Zaraki was smart enough (or anyone was smart enough. I hate some anime for that reason alone.), he'd hit him while he was dropping his sword, effectlively killing his concentration. But, this is bleach we're talking about here, so he will obviously wait, laughing his spikey head off. The battle can go one of two ways now.

1st. Zaraki gets owned, hardcore. He cant withstand all those Senbon, and dies a bloody death.

2nd. Zaraki thinks of some brilliant stratagey (ie. take off that damn eyepatch of his. His reitsu alone can probably defend against most of those blades), and thoroughly whips Byakuya's but six ways to sunday.

Which one works, i have no idea, depends on if Zaraki is as smart as he appears to be.

Kenpachi all the way.

(1) He carried a Yachiru and a Inoue on his back (mostly just looking for Yachiru, shes my favorite character, =D) But thats not the point. In a fight, look at it this way: At the end of Byakuya VS Ichigo, he only sliced Ichigos shoulder, making a large cut, and at the end of Zaraki Kenpachi vs Ichigo, he cut through Ichigo's side (I think? Couldnt really tell, was half asleep.) Besides, he K O ed Ichigo, he himself was K O ed as well, but still, Byakuya didn't as much as knock him to his knees, (although a bit earlier before that he did) so.. Kenpachi.

(2) I hate Byakuya. I hated him all the way up to episode 62 or 63 (whichever one has him talking to Rukia / saving her from Ichimaru's Shinsou) and then I SORT OF LIKED HIM, but not as much as Kenpachi. Kenpachi is one of those badass kind of fighters. I mean, seriously, if you cut Byakuya's shoulders, he'd probably fall down, but if you cut Kenpachi's (Ichigo did that, btw.) he just keeps going. Pain is of no matter to him.

Zaraki is anything but berzerk. Look at his battle with Tousen. If he was just some strong guy flailing around a sword, he'd never have won. Zaraki's greatest strength in battle is his stratagizing. If something fails, then he is gona find something that works. He's not gona stand there looking stupid (like oh so many people believe he would). If anything, it is Byakuya thats gona make mistakes, cause he gets cocky.

Every fight he's been in, hes allways underestimated his opponents *cept for the first fight with ichigo*. If he keeps this attitude during a fight with Kenpachi, he's gona get destroyed. One slip in judgement, like Tousen did, is the end of any fight with Zaraki.

I vote for Kenpachi. I do like Byakuya, especially after he stopped acting like he had an stick up his- well, the point is he's fine. I just prefer Ken-chan more. He's cooler.

And for all those who say Byakuya would win hands down in a fight, I just want to say that if Zaraki took the fight seriously, as in, no eyepatch and no bells in his hair, it'd be quite the fight.

And, guys, once again I remind you that Kenpachi did withstand 2 BanKai's right after each other.
First was Tousen's BanKai, he beat that.
Then it was Komamura's BanKai (even though they didn't get to finish the fight), but still...
Kenpachi didn't seem damaged at all when we got to see him after the two BanKai fights...
So I think handeling Byakuya wouldn't be that big of a deal for him..:
Ppl think too much of Byakuya, just cause he is a noble and all that cra....

You can't compare them how they fought fights against different people.
We haven't seen Byakuya vs Tousen and Komamura.
Therefor, you can't use that as a measurement.
Both of them have however fought Ichigo.
Byakuya was winning against Ichigo's bankai (before hollow Ichigo came) with just his sword (in other words, without fighting with his bankai).
While Ichigo won against Kenpachi without his bankai.
Kenpachi would loose, he's just too slow for Byakuya.

He's too slow, he wouldn't even get a single hit on Byakuya.
He was too slow to block Ichigo's normal attacks.
Yet Byakuya was able to block and hit Ichigo even when he was using his bankai.
And when Ichigo fought Byakuya, he was a lot stronger than when he fought Kenpachi.
Kenpachi fights using power only.
What good is power when you can't hit the opponent?
There's simply no way that Kenpachi could win.

Ugh, I know I sound like a fanboy, but if Byakuya was losing i'd argue for him!

If Zaraki were to remove his Eye Patch, his reitsu would be obscenely large. We dont *know* how fast he can get! The only thing we got to see during his full power attack was pretty much just a hit. A hit that demolished a good square of land, but thats beside the point. We've seen how he can hold up to massive attacks (Ie. Tousen. Cricket 1st movement seems to be on par with the thousand blades attack of senbon, if not a little more straight forward). He just picked out the blades and proceeded to kick ass.

And Zaraki is also a thinker. That means that every angle we've thought of during this fight, he has too. And that means he will probably think of some strategy to go with it. Even during Tousens Bankai, (which is arguabley one of the deadliest if used right) He managed to devise a way to escape it. I dont think it's completely beyond him to devise a strategy to counter Senbon Zakura (assuming it could possibly hurt him in the first place)

Byakuya is the superior character. That's what this thread is about, not who would win in a fight... Byakuya's character is more complex, deeper. He is a widower who was torn between promises. He has a heart too!

Kenpachi I view as one-dimensional. He loves to fight. That love earned him a captain spot. That's his story.

As the anime goes forward, I hope to a bit more of Kenpachi's life. But for now, I think Byakuya is the better character.

Character wise, Byakuya is the more complex and deep than Zaraki. Sure, Zaraki has depth (he's NOT all fight fight fight. His relationship with Yachiru is proof enough), but Byakuya is simply the more complex character between them. He's all cold on the surface (just as Zaraki is all bloodlust on the surface), but he apparently can have feelings such as love, hate, respect, desire. Unlike Zaraki, whose actions can mostly (I said mostly, meaning it is not always true) be explained but his bloodlust and love of a good brawl, Byakuya's motives are questionable on every turn (honor and love... and he couldn't choose between them), to a large extent (of course, it is not always so, whic makes him all the more complex, the fact you cannot explain all of his actions based upon one or two things).

Battle wise, I'm more of a Byakuya fan so I'm probably biased, but I see two clear things that point towards Byakuya's superiority:
1. Bankai, and great expretise: Bankai in itself is a huge advantage to the Shinigami, and using it perfectly, having access to all of its abilities and strategically using all of its advantages, is already putting any bankai wielding peson a level above all any other foe. Proof of that can be found in the fact that Yoruichi stated that Ichigo had no chance to defeat Byakuya, although his reiatsu qualified as that of a Captain. Once Byakuya unleashed bankai, Ichigo would've been doomed.

2. Ichigo's attempts to defeat either: Ichigo defeated Zaraki without actually having bankai or even fully mastering his sword; he merely learned his sword better and thus managed to pull a comeback and defeat the fearsome Zaraki, while against Byakuya, he needed his bankai, the Hollow's intervention, and sheer luck to win.

Zaraki fans might argue that Zaraki defeated a Captain (who, by all acounts, possesed bankai as well), but fact is we dont' know how the battle went. As far as we know, Zaraki might've defeated him with a single slash, without him releasing bankai, or perhaps his was like Tousen, stupid enough to hold the kill for Zaraki to figure a way out.

I'm assuming your talking about:

1. When Byakuya owned Ichigo in the real world
2. On that bridge in SS
3. When he finally beats him on the exicution grounds

The first time, do you think the outcome would have been any different if Ichigo had been fighting Zaraki? I dont think so.

The second time, he didnt even properly fight Byakuya, Yoruichi stopped him. At that time he already had the reiatsu of a captain. Personally I think when Ichigo was fighting Zaraki, at the end of the fight when you could see the hollow's mask in Ichigo's reiatsu, he was much stronger then most people give him credit for, he was pulling power from both his hollow (because you could see the mask) and Zangetsu (he basicly says as much durring the fight). I think at the point the idea that he had the power to beat Byakuya seems possible, at least to me.

Oh and btw, I dont get how you can judge a characters strength by the # of times it takes Ichigo to beat them, by your reasoning, the grand fisher would be stronger then Zaraki, because he didnt beat the gand fisher on his first try and he did beat Zaraki the first time he tried.

I still dont see why if all his hollow was going to do is prevent him from being cut badly w/ a mask it's image would appear in his reiatsu. I think when he was fighting w/ Zaraki he was completely harmonized w/ Zangetsu and his hollow, obviously he wasnt when he fought Byakuya because his hollow began to try to take over, probly because A bit of a spoiler for you anime only pplhis hollow knew bankai too now and thought he was powerful enough to become the king.

You people keep talking about how strong Kenpachi will be once he attains shikai and bankai. Ok lets say by some miracle he learns the name of his zanpahktou and obtains shikai. He doesn't have access to the materialization dummy that Ichigo used to obtain bankai in three days. So that means he would have to go about it the old fashioned away through practice and hard work, Which really doesnt seem like his style to me. But even if was determined and tried to work on it, It's gonna be a long long time before we see a bankai out of Kenpachi.......Oh but back to the topic, I do think Zaraki is a way cooler and more enjoyable character, Even if he would get owned by Byakuya

No, Technically he didn't need his hollow side to beat Byakuya. He could have ended it the instant he released his bankai. But it was his choice to remove the tip of his sword from Byakuya's throat. A cocky and unwise move to be sure. He knew Byakuya was underestimating him and wanted him to go all out. But that was Byakuya's own stupidity for underestimating him in the first place. Not to mention the second "miracle" as Byakuya put it, When Ichigo appeared behind him he could have simply chopped off Byakuya's head, But instead he chose to talk crap then stab him in the side. I never said he did, in fact I dont think he was drawing a significant ammount of power from his hollow when he fought Byakuya, like he was when he fought Zaraki, hence why I think Zaraki stands a decent chance against Byakuya, dont get me wrong, I think it would be a great fight, I just think that eventually Zaraki would come out on top. I also noticed some people saying Byakuya was a more stratigic fighter and Zaraki is all hack and slash, but i'm not so sure, I think his fight against Tousen is good proof that he has the ability to think on his feet, plus the fact that he's accually pretty observant, he picked out 2 of the 3 captains that betrayed Soul Society as being "afraid to die".

If ichigo beat zaraki with one strike with only a image, compare that with byakuya takin a few couple of hits with a real hollow.

They both decided to dick around, Ichigo didnt slice open Byakuya's neck open and Tousen didnt chop off Zaraki's head when he could have. This argument really boils down to how you look at Ichigo's fight w/ Zaraki and how much help his hollow really gave him, both kinda subjective things, I dont really think anyone is changing their minds here, sure would be a hell of a good fight though.

either way if byakuya wasnt a pansy who only used one sword and decided to use all his swords in senkei it would have been a landslide victory, probably. Zaraki is someone who has ultra high hp so he can afford to use your attack as a opening to attack you without worrying about getting hit, thats his real strength. Zaraki didnt win by tactics in the tousen fight. All he did was take a hit and then attack his opponent, he is fearless, thus he wins.

He still had to figure out how to beat an enemy without using his sight, hearing and smell, that takes some thought, I was just trying to show that raw power isnt all he has going for him.

Tousen's bankai would work perfectly on a normal person, based on the power of fear. When you dont know what's going on, your movements naturally become cautious and slow, thats the power of tousen's bankai. Kenpachi has no fear in him, and that helped him win. In that way, its more of a "raw power" win. He had a hell lot of skill in anticipating the moves though, thats a pluspoint. But unfortunately byakuya dosent really blind, so thats out of topic -.-

Even people with tons of power can get scared, if all he had going for him was the ability to smash what was in front of him, he would be scared when there wasnt anything infront of him to smash but he was still being attacked.

tousen said himself. Zaraki, unlike others, was a "devil" who was used to the darkness or whatever, thus he did not feel fear. So yea, while people with tons of power might get scared, zaraki is someone who never feeels scared yet has a large amount of power.

Byakuya is superior to Zaraki, main cause Byakuya knows Shunpo, can use SenbonZakura Kageyoshi to protect himself and attack very fast with it And he uses his Kidoh well, i think byakuya could just use Rikougo korou ( prolly spelled it wrongly, stupid dyslexic ) on him, and then unleash Senbonzakura

kuchiki would win cuz he is stronger then zaraki anyday. in the anime u see that everyone is scared of both of them but everyone is scared of kuchiki more then zaraki. i mean also it did take ichigo 3 times to beat kuchiki while ichigo beat zaraki in just one try. and zaraki was not holding back i mean he took of his bells and his eye patch and he still lost.

Yeah, and Byakuya did NOT fainted after the final match, meaning that BYAKUYA COULD'VE CONTINUE FIGHTING IF HE HAD WANTED TO!!! Since Zaraki fainted after his match with Ichigo, it means that Zaraki couldn't fight even if he wanted to.

In my opinion Byakuya mainly because of his speed, Ken-chan is good but I don't think he could stand up to Byakuyas Bankai and speed put together.

Yes... if Byakuya wouldn't have actted thc cocky bastard and didn't pause to think about Ichigo's powers before actualy attacking. Ichigo did manage to press his sword to Byakuya's throat only because Byakuya wasn't focusing on defence; he was being cocky.

About the Hollow thing, people seem to forget that when the Hollow takes over, Ichigo's power increases tremendously. That means he became so much more powerful than Byakuya he could've squahsed him. Too bad he's a cocky bastard, too.

But why are we talking about this? Fact remains that Ichigo needed bankai to beat Byakuya, regardless of whether or not he could've killed him right at the start of the fight or no, while he defeated Zaraki without drawing power from Ogichi (again, if you would just pay attention, you'd notice that had he been drawing power from Ogichi, he would've dwarfed Zaraki's power. Remember that Ogichi is waaaaaaaaaaaaay above Captain level) or even using bankai. He just used his Shikai perfectly. That's all.

So in short, while he needed bankai to defeat Byakuya, he needed only to figure out he had to use his shikai's ability to raise his power in order to defeat Zaraki. See? He needed a double power boost to defeat Byakuya (bet your ass he was drawing power from Zangets all the time? In fact, in the manga it is stated by a certain white someone that Ichigo continualy draws power from Zangetsu and therfore it is easy for him to become king), while he needed only one to defeat Zaraki.

This means that Byakuya is stronger than Zaraki.
