I just started to learn how to play the violin this year. It's fun and stuff. Violins sound damn good... quite versatile if you know how to play it well. In the past, I've always thought violins were lame. -_-

I play the flute, clarinet, alto saxophone (self taught). I tried the piano and guitar, but i had too much stuff going on so i drop those. By the way my dad's a music teacher, so i had all these instruments available to me all the time, i didn't pay a dime for the instruments or classes (my dad never gave us classes).

i guess i'll start off i'm a bass guitarist, but i first started off playing classical guitar. i mainly play the bass but i also like to have a tinker on the old acoustic. What else....i can rudimentarly play the drums but that's it one beat throughout the song is all i can do. learning to play the piano but haven;t got the time.

I own a beautiful Ibanez EDC710 and use a small Ashdown perfect ten amp for practice.

i've been playing acoustic for about 3 - 4 years now and bass guitar for about the same.

i play bass at church every sunday with the worship team, mainly me adding a bit of funk into modern worship songs quite fun actually

i have played a few gigs one was for a tsunami appeal which was fun.

Influences..well i listen to loads of different types of music but i mainly am influenced by flea from RHCP he is a master mind when it comes to playing the bass.

thats about it i guess.lol not much but i have fun

What do you play?
Drums and Guitar

What gear you got?
An electronic drum set. (I'd prefer an average acoustic one though, but my neighboors wouldn't allow me if you know what I mean. :p)
And about three guitars (My dad's a guitarist too so that's why.) two electric (gibson LP and A fender strat)

How long have you been playing?
I've been playing drums for 2 years and guitar for 2.5 now.

what are your experiences?
We've got an 'open podium' at our schoo where you can perform with whatever you like, so I've played a drumsolo for two drumsets with a friend (we wrote it ourselfes) and I have been playing guitar in 2 completely n00b (semi-improvised) bands. (both horrid) And I've played a song with a girl who is a really good singer and we actually got 2nd from 32 acts.

What are your influences?
Mmm, I don't really have influences. I really like arctic monkeys and some other Indy/rock bands but the songs I write really don't look like them.

for drumming, well I just drum along with whatever music I'd like too. I'm really trying to learn jazz now.

What do you play?
I play guitar.

What gear you got?
To be honest, I just have 2 guitars: 1 classical (yes, I play classical music) and 1 acoustic. I play electric sometimes on Saturdays just for fun.

What's your experence?
I've played in front of an audience with my friends or as a duet type thing (I cannot sing to save my life)... Just cover music. I been offered to play some classical songs in a formal concert a billion times by my guitar teacher but I just don't do that. Mostly because if I muck up, it's the end of my life... and I get stage fright so yeah... With others I'm ok, or if I'm playing music that I want to play. :P

How long have you been playing?
About 4 years I think. I can remember my first guitar lesson: I was trying to play Ode To Joy and I sucked big time. So funny if I think about it now... heh.

What are your influences?
I don't really have any influences (I don't write music) but music that I like... If I hear a song, I usually go and try find the guitar tab/chords for it. :D

Well, I sing more than play any instrument... but I have played the guitar and piano for years.

I'm a Music Education major. :) I've been singing for 18 years now. I've played the guitar on and off for 7. I've played the piano for 14 years.

My family is a big influence on me. My brother and dad are both musicians, having started in the same degree I am now. Neither of them finished, however. I grew up in a musical enviroment, so it is just natural that I'd pick things up. :D I've been on stages since I was about 4 or 5 years old. I'm a mezzo-soprano (alto), so I prefer to sing lower notes, though I have a pretty good range and can sing high notes, too... just don't like to, bleh. I took piano lessons when I was younger, but quit because I hate to practice. I still played the piano and started taking college piano lessons three years ago. I play the guitar for fun. My brother taught me quite a bit, and now I just pluck away when I want to.

I give voice and piano lessons now as a community service at the high school in Magnolia, AR. I also help out with their choir, working with the students to help them make a better sound and enjoy music more.

Instrument: Flute
Gear: silver Olds Flute, two silver cloths, a tuning rod, First Act guitar (still learning), guitar stand, another tuner, about 5 picks, tons of sheet music, karaoke cds
Experience: Flute - I've played with my jr. high and high school bands, I've participated in UIL Solo/Ensemble and in All-Region try-outs, then this weekend I went to A-Kon and played my flute there (sometimes with Eric [a fellow con-goer] who plays violin)..... Singing - I've been in the local Rotary Club Talent Show for two years, I've done karaoke at a restaurant, and I've participated in several other events.
Time: Flute - 6, almost 7, years..... Singing - I think 3, almost 4, years
Influences: Everything... other music, art, emotion, movies, family, school, and just life in general. Something that has really inspired me lately is Penicillin Nano. They were at A-Kon this weekend and I attended and participated in a Q&A. One question that what asked was what the meaning was behind their music. Hakuei said that they want whoever listens to their music to not have "half-assed emotions." If you're happy at the time, he wants you to fell happier. If you're sad at the time, he wants you to feel sadder. He wants to bring out etreme emotion in his fans. Basically, instead of fiddling with crap, carry it out completely. Don't just leave it hanging. What Hakuei said really effected me and I now admire both him and Chisato even more.

lol I remember a thread like this in the General Lounge early last year but that was to old so yeah this thread'll work fine XD

What do you play?

I play a little violin and I used 2 play guitar but the only instrument I'm REALLY good at is the recorder (the flute use vertically not horizontaly like normal flutes)

What gear do you own?

I own 2 recorders, 1 guitar, a guitar pick, a guitar case, one of those fancy violin cases, a violin, the normal violin gear, and a small instrument shining kit :)

Whats your experiance?

Only experiment I've had with instruments is playing in the school holiday fairs. lol

How long have u been playing?

3 years with the recoder, and 1 1/2 years with the Guitar and Violin.

What are your influences?

My mother was a journalist for a music channel so I've met alot of musicians that give me tips and inspirations, my mother because she's very musical so i learn alot from her, and my old music teacher that died a while back who taught me the ropes with using the violin and the guitar.

What do you play?
First instrument i learned was the piano, I kinda learned it on my own, a little tuts from my relatives. Then I learned the drums, but Im not good at it. And then I play the guitar, both acoustic and electric. SOmetimes with the bass. and i got a few tuts in turntablism..

What gear do you own?
A piano, keyboard, amps, an Ibanez e-guitar, acoustic guitar..thats about it

Whats your experiance?
For the keyboard, i played with a band during school parties but stopped when i started the guitar. I have a band and performed during university celebration activities and we reached semis in a national band competition. The drums? in our school marching band during high school..LOL

How long have u been playing?
The piano? since i was 5 or 6, something. the drums in high school, about when i was 15. the guitar, LOL, i was like 17 already..

What are your influences?
for piano? none really. i was more into classical. but yeah, i was influenced by local Philippine bands. guitars? metallica, lost prophets, dreamtheater..but the greatest influence is a good friend of mine..really good at it..

What do you play?
I play acoustic/electric guitar and drums. I also sing backup vocals for my bands.

What gear you got?
I've got an acoustic guitar and a hybrid acoustic/electric

What's your experence?
I play in a basement band, and we've been together since 2004. We had to do a Chemistry project, debuted as "Sentimental Failure," and created our first single Khemisly. We're sort of on a hiatus right now, but we're trying to get back together for Westock (which is a battle of the bands at my high school).

I'm also in a Youth praise band. We've led worship at my church a few times and we've also played in Nashville for a September 11 Memorial service. Originally we were called "28 Miles to Nashville," and as of last weekend, we've shortened it to "28 Miles." XD

How long have you been playing?
I've been playing drums for about 4 years now. I've only been playing seriously for about 3 years, though. I've only been playing guitar since August 2005. I've been a lyricist since I was a baby, though. None of my songs are any good, but I've made up about a hundred silly songs. My greatest achievement may have been the song about Chemistry (my basement band's first single) or the one about Ponies (circa 1994).

What/Who are your influences?
I like all types of music. Since I've been into JPop and JRock, I've been focusing on a bit of that sound. It just depends on season and style, I guess. When I first heard Damien Rice, I started singing alot like him. Ooh, and then there's the Broadway musical phase. Once, I created a musical about school. T_T

yet impossible to pull off... -_-"

I started writing my own songs some weeks ago but it's pretty hard.
I tend to make the guitar part to 'full' so I'm actually only making songs for only a guitar and a singing line :p
It's pretty hard to think of a song with more instruments but I guess I should just take a song as an example and then write my song in the same style bu just with other elements or something to start with.

Haha, nirvana are easy, lol, but friggin hell, radiohead take so much effort. It's not like it's hard, it's just that you have to memorise so much! >.< I've JUST finished the main part of paranoid android, I haven't had any time, but I intend to learn the whole song :toocool:

Uhh, my dad just borrowed a parker fly guitar from the mmusic shop we always go to. DAMN it's a beautiful guitar!! :biggrinlo But we already have 18 guitars, and it's expensive T.T But I played it for an hour yesterday, it's got SUCH a great action

I suppose that's what I love about guitar, i just grab my NEW gorgeous acoustic, and go play to people around a campfire etc. might be a bit difficult with a harp :winking56 But it's still such an interesting instrument to play, I suppose a lot to do with because no one plays it :redbiggri

As for everyone who wants to play guitar, or has tried and wants to try again, I really have to stress that you buy decent equipment. If you get a cheap(ly) made accoustic or electric guitar and amp (especially those "Starter Packs" :(), you will quickly lose interest because no matter how well you play something, it sounds like total crap. If you go out and buy a decent guitar from a reputable maker, as well as an amp that has at least more than 10 watts and an 8 inch speaker, you will be A LOT more excited to practice and play. You'll also save money too! Trust me on this one, I learned this the hard way. :sad

I've dabbled in a whole bunch of things, but the instruments I'm fairly good at are

-voice (yes, it counts as an instrument)
-flute
-drums
-steel drums
-harmonica
-melodian
-piccolo (it's a tiny flute! :D)

The instruments I've dabbled in and I'm not so good at:

-bass guitar (tried, and gave up after a couple of weeks)
-ukelele (same reason - guitars confound me!)
-piano

I wanted to try learning the fiddle next, though considering my luck with stringed instruments, who knows if I'll get any good with it. XD;;

I tried playing once on the campus' piano but I failed miserably and my arm muscles started talking back to me as if saying "Where the hell have you been all this time?". So yeah, its going to take me sometime to return back to how I once were =p.

I play the chinese flute! Its called the Dizi in chinese. (pronounced dee-zi) I've been playing it for almost 6 years now, and I'm loving it!

I'm in a Chinese Orchestra. Sounds kinda cheesy to me, even till now though I've been in it for 6 years already. But its really not. Heh. Loads of fun, and I love the feeling of being on stage, playing music.

I also know a bit of Percussion and cello because of being in the orchestra.

To put it short and simple bassoon is my main instrument. I love the alto saxophone, though... and I really want to continue playing it, but my saxophone doesn't work right so it isn't really much of a help.:(

I have to learn piano because I'm going into music in college... It seems like a fun instrument, but nothing like the two above.

I can also play clarinet and trumpet, I don't really care for either, though. I've played guitar and didn't find it fun at all. I've attempted flute, but my flute is messed up (worse then the saxophone.) so I couldn't even get a sound.:sad

That's about as short as I can put it. XD

Guitar, Bass, Drums, Trombone, Saxophone(Alto, Tenor, Bari), Bass 5, Organ, and Trumpet.

What gear you got?
Fender Strat
Fender P-Bass
Blessing Trombone
Pearl Drum Set

What's your experience?
Trombone going on 7 years now, started in Middle School. Everything else pretty much came into play these last 4 years, or so. I've marched for the school band on both Trombone and Bass 5, along with playing Sax, Trombone and Drums for the Jazz Band. I've also had the privilege of marching with the USC Spirit of Troy and playing in both the CSULA Honor Band & Jazz Orchestra. I also sing and play drums in an underground band.

How long have you been playing?
4-7 years, depending on instrument.

What are your influences?
Led Zeppelin for most things, but I cite both Classical & Rock, as well.

My family is pretty musical. Mother sings in a choir and my father is a professional musician, he's the vice principal of local conservatory, teaches his instrument plus theory, plays in city theaters orchestra and composes pieces for them. I've inherited some of that: I have excellent sense of rhythm and pitch ear. Unfortunately, I'm lazy.

When I was around five I played violin for about half a year.

When I turned eight, I applied for local music institute. Got the best score in entrance exam, but they didn't then have spots free for pianists (my first choice) so I had to wait for one to open - meanwhile, I practiced kantele. Not sure if that instrument even has a name in English, at least my dictionary didn't know others than this - anyway, it's a basically a stringed box you keep in your lap and play with your fingers. About a year later, I got started with piano. Also with theory lessons - I know cadences and chords, can do harmonization and transposition and recognize different musical eras and their major figures.

Did that for nine years, but eventually, after getting to high school, I no longer had time or will to practice - or even the instrument, as I'd moved to live with my grandparents to be closer to my school. I passed the final exam and quit. I somewhat regret that, but on the other hand, I was never too eager to practice and I was just getting to level where keeping on would definitely have cut time from my other hobbies. So - I still try to keep up my old skills but don't practice regularly.

Also, I've been singing in choirs through my school career and I have rudimentary skills with guitar. (I absolutely ROCK in Guitar Hero, though! ;P)

So, yeah. I may have talent, but in the end, I just don't love music enough to concentrate on it.

What I play?

hmmm..... let's see:

I have musial talent in playing the acostic and electric guitar, only I didn't own an electric one. My brother has his own band where his close friends are members. Their lead guitarist was the one who taught me how to play the electric one and was glad how fast I was able to learn. Well, it's not in my nature to be a mysteriously fast learner of music.. I just don't want to talk about and I don't know why... ^_^ maybe because I love G3 so much so yeah...

I also have a talent in playing the piano (organ and the grand traditional one), saxophone and violin.

I inherit the musical genes from my grandfather in my mother's side, he's very musical. he even knows how to create music from a tree leaf! very genius.

ALso, I'm kind of lazy in reading a musical piece, so I made my own ways on how I'll be able to go with the rhythm and notes. So I have this widow type of learning where I'll just have to hear the music and I can easily go along with it. It's the fastest way for me to learn.

I played the Clarinet and Alto Clarinet during middle school. It was fun since we were rewarded for our progress with our instrument and competed against other schools. That and the performances we held were great since we played in front of a audience including our parents. Got to play some great music.

Now, I don't play anything anymore.

I play the piano (grade 6, but I stopped taking grades)
I've played the piano for around 8 or 9 years. I've played at various concerts in the past, but now I play whatever I feel like.

I also play the guitar, acoustic and electric (I teach myself different songs)
I've played the guitar for around 5-6 years. I used to be in a band but we broke up a year and a half ago. I've played a few gigs, but nothing major.

I can also sing alright, but I've never had lessons. I've only ever sung publicly at gigs and at one concert (I did a piano and vocal arrangement).

Influences:
Tough, because I like such a wide range of music.

-All Shal Perish
-Rage Agaisnt the Machine
-Joe Satriani
-Metallica
-Iron Maiden
-Gackt
-Nightmare
-Parkway Drive
-And much much more

I can play very minimal piano and violin. Compared to my brother who is a pro at piano, violin, guitar, and cello. And he can sing, too.

I used to think I was the "smart one" of us siblings compared to his "musical/artistic one", but since my youngest brother started school, he's been at the top of his class and getting IQ tested as genius. I'm only above average.

So yeah, it sucks. I'm stuck as the "nothing special one" now.
