As the question says, what language or languages do you speak and what one(s) would you wish to speak?
I for one love languages and havetryed to learn about ten other languages from my own, but I didn't really work.
For instance:
*I speak American English
*I wish to learn Japanese, Greek, Latin, and Russian
(especially Japanese so I can want Anime in its original form) :pblow:

Well, I'm Australian born Chinese, so I speak and write Australian english.
I also know how to speak Cantonese, since I use that language at home and other certain places. I can understand very little of Mandarin.
I did learn Vietnamese, but too bad I didn't pay enough attention back at high school.
I would love to learn German. And Japanese doesn't sound to bad either. I could read some of the Japanese words though, since it has the same meaning as most chinese words. I can read very basic chinese characters, but not a lot.
I speak dutch, english (duh), a little german and even less french (hard language)

The grammar keeps tripping me up. On the bright side, if I do manage to get the pronounciations down pat, I sound like I'm speaking Elvish. :DDD

My original language is English. I know a little bit of Spanish. I didn't learn it well mostly because I wasn't interested in it though.
I plan to learn Japanese in the future. I see learning Kanji as a near impossibility for me though... there are just too many characters... and they are all... too intricate. The language though, is a definite possiblity. I hope to learn enough Japanese to hold a decent conversation with. At that point, I would like to visit Japan with a few friends (who are also learning Japanese). I would love to say I could become fluent in everything about the language, but I realize that is probably not exactly possible. Regardless, knowing enough of the language for basic conversation is all I desire. If I manage to learn more than that, then I'll look upon it as an extra bonus. :winking56

My native language is American English (though I'm not too proud of it). I took some Spanish in high school (and I remember about 5-10% of what I learned, lol), and am working on teaching myself Japanese (a slow process, I assure you).
I'd like to learn the rest of Spanish and Japanese (at least enough to hold an intelligent conversation), and Scottish Gaelic would be nice, too. Maybe German, too.

I speak King's English (What a lame way to start a post ) and Scots, which in truth is only a language due to technicality since it's more correct to call it an inversion of all things in "real" English. Basically we Glaswegians speak a little like Ichimaru in the Lunar subs only with a really heavy accent and special regional words thrown in "bairn", "braw", "plamph" (Best insult ever btw) and the all time classic "get it right up ye wee man" or perhaps "ahm gonnae boattle ye" although for the most part those last two are reserved for use by the less savoury characters amongst us.
Yes Scots is technically a real language, I'm not making it up, if you're British check your census next time 'round, it has 1,000,000 speakers worldwide officially.
As for languages I'd like to speak... Well, I was supposed to learn French in school but I failed miserably and since then I've had no real interest in languages until the last couple of weeks or so since it occured to me the sheer volume of Japanese things I like: Anime, Manga, Kendo even my favourite football (Nakamura Shunsuke) and Baseball (Ichiro) players, although that is more a freaky coincidence than anything else since they both play for my favourite teams. So anyways in short, I'd now like to learn Japanese and am thusfar failing miserably in my attempts at that too. :redbiggri

heh i had a hard time learning tagalog too. my first year at the university, i didn't talk to my classmates because they might call me maarte if i address them in english and if i speak tagalog, i have a very heavy accent. not good at all.
yeah some people in the philippines have this misconception that those who come from the US are maarte. i used to be one of them (well i did spend the first 13 years of my life there), but now that i'm in the US myself and have filipino friends who grew up here, i understand that it's hard to learn the language if you grew up not knowing it. and the accent comes with the package.

saycheese... about your russian question.. it really depends... on what language(s) you already know... like if you know some other kind of slavik or baltic language it might be easier for you... for example i know Bulgarian and if i were to learn Russian it would be ten times easier than when i learned English because 1) we have the same alphabet (the Bulgarians acutally made it up but whatever) 2) we have the exact same pronunciations and 3) most of the words are pretty close ... so yeah... i mean if you know English and only English then yes it would be very hard for you... but other wise.. it depends... lol!

As for me...
I speak English and Mandarin at an acceptable level. My Japanese really sucks since I'm still having a problem trying to understand speech.
But I can understand:
A little of Chinese dialects such as Cantonese or Hokkien. And Malay too...well...not that good at hearing Standard Malay...more of the Peranakan Malay dialect....well, that's all...pretty horrible for a person who can only understand a little of each only....:D
