Ok, I am curious about what you guys think about this.

When you install most programs they have:

English (Amercian)
English (UK)

But I dont see how it really matters since the odds of colour and pants being used during installation is slim.

Is American an actual language or is it English with a few differences ?

american english has quite a few different spellings.. like color, honor, realize etc.. also, some things permitted in american english are not permitted in english, like "Go slow" or "It is me!" Other than that, i don't think there is much more to it

Enough for you to call it another language ?

Is there such a thing as Amercian or is it simply English ?

There is a difference, and it makes a huge difference when you consider why there is the option. Your installing say a Office suite on your pc, now if your American and you have learned to spell certain words the American way the obviously you dont want the spell checker set to English Uk. :P

The main difference is the accents. But that is basically it.....

It's not another total language, but a variation of British English. English is spoken in quite many countries, eg. America, Nigeria... But it changes with every culture. I don't speak Spanish, but I heard that Spanish in Spain is quite different from Spanish in South America. I think the same applies to English as well.

And maybe it's just the people in my school (I study in the UK now) but the British love to make fun of the American accent. Perhaps it's the same the other way round

Yeah, you're right. It is the same basic language. Just how it is said is different.

Obviously some people have a hard time reading rules posted at the top of a forum.

From the start I think it was English with some differences but it's becoming its own language more and more. Soon it will be called American and not American english.

lol one day Ebonics will become part of the english language.

English here is constantly changing, as we introduce more slang, some of the slang becomes new words. Like "ain't" for example.

There's more to it than just that.

Certainly, there are the spelling differences, but both languages are developing different vocabularies (arguably, the American language is producing new words at a far higher rate).

I find it highly unlikely that it will become a separate language, "American", any time soon - it's still English, albeit with it's own unique character.
