I keep hearing about how bad mainstream is. Well, let's help people keep their ears from bleeding. To help introduce people to new music post a link to a band site or page that has music for people to sample. Maybe give a little description of how the band or artist sounds. NO slamming or ridiculing the choices people put up, if you don't like the music then don't listen.
Realize that everybody has different tastes and that doesn't necessarily make it bad--so no music snobbery allowed. This is just a way for people to test the waters in other genres and artists and not get stuck in a musical rut (dude, i knew a guy that only listened the cranberries and that's all he would listen to--wtf?) anyway, post it if you think anyone out there might like it. all the stuff isn't the same. i have indie, punk, hiphop, and rock listed, so feel free to mix it up when you list. and come back and list more as you discover cool artists.
her space holiday: if you like the postal service, it's possble you'll like this. if you can track it down on itunes check out the song "you and me". http://www.herspaceholiday.com/main.html
reggie and the full effect: if you like keyboard tinged hardcore and punk and songs in the vein of dr. demento or weird al. crazy to watch them perform.
http://www.ratfe.com/disc/disc.asp ---click on the pictures in the frame and scroll down and they have icons for songs available for you to listen to.

the academy is...: pop punk/emo. pretty vocals. if you look it up on itunes, or another site that has it, try "attention" it's an awesome song.
http://www.purevolume.com/theacademyis
straylight run: is fronted by former members of taking back sunday. "existentialims on prom night" is excellent.
http://www.purevolume.com/straylightrun
underOATH: hardcore/screamo. the song "reinventing your exit" is amazingly good. fun to watch as well.
http://www.purevolume.com/underoath
the dresden dolls: self-described as cabaret punk. they make a hell of a lot of noise for just a 2 piece band. if you can find the song, get your hands on "coin-operated boy". "girl anachronism" is really good as well. if you get the chance see them live.

eastern youth: indie rock straight outta japan. they're cool, they don't have any english tainting their music. if you can find it get your hands on "zigzag zigzag ticktock ticktock". they're good buddies with cursive (and if you don't know who cursive is, god help you)
http://www.purevolume.com/easternyouth
cursive: indie rock gods. their album "the ugly organ" is mind blowingly good. it's beautiful, yet dark. it sounds like it's in a state of chaotic decay and is just goodness. start off with "gentleman caller" and "the recluse". if you can find it, listen to "art is hard" and "the ugly organ" (the album is titled this as well).

the photo atlas: local goodness from my home state. and i've seen these kids live--holy hell. they're good.
http://www.purevolume.com/thephotoatlas
matson jones: awesome local cello indie rock. start off with "a little bit of arson never hurt anyone" and "the italian song".
http://www.matsonjones.net/music.html
throwdown: f**kin' hardcore to rearrange your face. try "you can't kill integrity"
http://www.purevolume.com/throwdown
hellogoodbye: electronic happy, dancy pop punk. start off with "shimmy shimmy quarterturn" and then the dance remix of "bonnie taylor shakedown 2k4"
http://www.purevolume.com/hellogoodbye
we are the fury: in the vein of glam rock. if you like head automatica (which features members of glassjaw and gorillaz--dan the automator to be exact) you'll like these guys. start off with "better off this way"
http://www.purevolume.com/wearethefury
damone: do you miss 80s hair rock/metal? well, damone fills in. the singer looks like she could kick my butt. i've seen them live and they're good. if you can find it their song "up to you" and basically all the stuff off their first album "in the attic" is good. their sound is also lighter and more rock than metal.
http://www.purevolume.com/damone
less than jake: ska/punk. fun so much fun! if you see them live they always do cool things with the crowd. the last time i saw them they had toilet paper blow out at the audience, fake snow drift out over the crowd, and a huge explosion of confetti as well.

x-cutioners: turntable work only.
http://www.x-ecutioners.net/
dangermouse: rap. this isn't you typical slickly produced hip hop. start off with "ghetto pop life" , "don't do drugs", and "benzi box".
